Needed more mania
"Wrestle Maniacs" was one of my least favourite 'What's New Scooby Doo' episodes on first watch, and at the time there was the wonder as to whether it was to do with that it revolved around wrestling. Something that doesn't do much for me. Did remember liking the villain though and it was the only real thing that was memorable about it after watching, we're talking about first watch here and there have been things not liked before and appreciated much more now.
There were quite a lot of things throughout my rewatch of the show recently that stood out as a massive improvement, including no longer considering Gibby Norton annoying, "A Scooby Doo Valentine" no longer being a "did little for me" episode, the ending of "Simple Plan and the Invisible Madman" being even more ingenious than remembered and no longer considering "Camp Comeoniwannascareya" a "doesn't feel like Scooby Doo" episode. But my ehh feelings on "Wrestle Maniacs" sadly are pretty much the same.
The best thing about "Wrestle Maniacs" is the villain. Titanic Twist is a great name and the very creepy and twisted design more than lives up to its name. Also loved the setting, wrestling and Scooby Doo has been proven to work together before (in 'A Pup Named Scooby Doo') and since (the WWE crossover) and it is a suitably unsettling backdrop. The action excites.
Did like the animation, especially for the Titanic Twist. The music has atmosphere and groove and the theme song has never grated. The gang are on decent form and the voice acting is on point.
However, the mystery is very thin, well everything about the story is thin, and the pace is rather dull. It's very predictable too with too few surprises (the sequence in the trailer being the one sign of real excitement), the reveal was pretty obvious this time and the motive fairly trivial. Not to mention the rather pat way it resolves.
Even the humour is not at its best, not terrible but nothing is inspired either which adds to the episode's blandness. The supporting characters are on the bland side and there are far more visually and musically memorable chase scenes and songs.
Rather average and bland this time round sadly. 5/10.
