A Harsh View of Religious Sophistry
Hitchcoc29 January 2020
This takes place in a village where the church dominates. A woman of "questionable" character is beaten to death and left in the church. When Wycliffe comes to investigate with his team, he finds that she had been victimized by people who claimed to be doing the work of God. We can see immediately that Wycliffe is no impressed when he refuses to shake the hand of the priest who found the body. It becomes an ugly episode.

The Last Rites
Prismark1018 April 2021
Wycliffe and his team travel to the remote west of Cornwall. They have to stay in a pub.

They are investigating the murder of a part time church cleaner Jessica Dobell found dead at the altar of the church. It looks like her body was placed there.

The Rev Michael Jordan found her as he went looking for some music sheets.

Jessica was known as a strong independent woman with several male admirers. Some of the locals were not happy with her loose morals and she had been receiving poisonous letters.

The reverend's sister Celia disliked the dead woman.

Jessica also did not get on well with her sister. Jessica also had a tense relationship with the tenants who lived in her farm building.

The episode tries to give a portrait of a god fearing remote Cornish community. They have a very strict view of Christianity where a woman such as Jessica Dobell does not fit in.

It was let down by some characters acting very strangely. In almost a guilty way. Several of them flew off the handle, right in front of the police investigating the murders.

It made you wonder if they were any normal people in Cornwall.

Also for the second episode in a row, having a caravan parked next to your house heavily implies that it is used as a passion wagon.

A plus point is the casting of Nigel Terry. He was brought up in Cornwall and his accent is genuine. You also sense that the other actors were just so pleased to have an actor of his calibre in the show.

It might explain Wycliffe's humanity showing when he confronts his character.
