YANCY DERRINGER "Ticket to Natchez" 1958

This 1958-59 series is about a card sharp, who returns home to New Orleans three years after the end of the Civil War. The man, Jock Mahoney, finds the city full of Northern carpet bagging types. He is secretly put to work as an undercover man by the city commissioner, Kevin Hagen. Mahoney is to keep Hagen advised on the various low-life types running wild in the city. He does this with the help of his Pawnee bodyguard, X. Brands. The series ran for a total of 34 episodes.

In this episode, the third of the series, we find Yancy Derringer, (Jock Mahoney) being called to a meeting with the city commissioner, Kevin Hagen. Hagen introduces Mahoney to a US Marshall, Bill Williams. Williams is in charge of delivering an Army payroll up river at Natchez. The Government wants to use Mahoney's riverboat to move the cash. Mahoney agrees and they will set off the next day when the cash arrives.

The last night in New Orleans has a bit of excitement to it as Mahoney bumps into several pretty women. First is film noir fav, Marie Windsor, who takes Mahoney out for a spot of gambling. Second, he has a run in with Miss Jean Byron. He rescues the woman after she is shot at out in the dark streets. Or so it seems.

The next day the cash shows and is locked in the steamboat's safe. Marshall Williams stands watch on the payroll. Also on the boat are both of the women from the night before, Windsor and Byron. Mahoney is not sure about either of the women, but figures they are both up to no good.

At the first stop on the journey, Mahoney receives a telegram from New Orleans. It tells him that Williams is not the real Marshall. The real man has been found dead. Now there is plenty of iron pulled and Williams gets the drop on Mahoney and his man, X.Brands. Williams has the pair drop their various guns to the floor. Helping out with the robbery is Miss Byron. They relieve Mahoney of the Government strongbox.

To the rescue we now have Miss Windsor who turns out to be handy with a pistol. Mahoney dives for the floor and grabs up the sawed off shotgun Williams had taken off X.Brands. Williams of course does not wish to come quietly, so more gun-play is needed, which has Williams eating both barrels of the shotgun.

Windsor it turns out is a Government agent sent along to keep an eye on the payroll.

Directing this exciting episode is former big screen helmsman, Richard Sale. Writer, producer and director Sale was involved in, WHITE BUFFALO, TORPEDO RUN, ABANDON SHIP, SUDDENLY, THIS SIDE OF THE LAW, A TICKET TO TOMAHAWK and THE INSIDE STORY.

Ticket to Natchez

When Yancy Derringer agrees to transport the army payroll on his riverboat.

Trouble is not far behind in the shape of two women.

Yancy is assisted by US Marshall Duke Winslow introduced to him by the city commissioner.

Billie Jo James is a bad girl with three boy's names that Yancy met in a gambling house.

Dorinda Ashton is a nervous damsel in distress who finds herself in danger.

It is obvious that the payroll is not going to be safe. There are several twists in store for Yancy and not everyone is who they claim to be.
