"Stubborn Pioneer" opens with Hawkeye and Chingachgook trapping for furs when Huron Chief Grey Wolf (Don Garrard, second of four) challenges them to give up their furs or risk losing their scalps instead. The Hurons claim only the furs, as Hawkeye warns the nearby settlement about Grey Wolf, but cannot convince Everett Carpenter (Len Ontkean, fifth of seven) to wait for spring to begin his own settlement. Trader Jason Masters (Hugh Watson, fourth of six) conspires with Indian guide Sewaga (Alan Zelonka) to use sand in place of gunpowder to ensure that Carpenter will have little defense in case of attack. Hawkeye assures safety for Carpenter's settlers by willfully giving himself up to Grey Wolf, leaving a tearful Chingachgook behind to wonder if he'll ever see his white brother alive again. The only gaping hole left in the script is the fact that the villainy of Jason Masters goes unpunished, but it's still one of the better entries.

Hawkeye and Chingachgook are checking their trap lines when they are set upon but a band of Huron warriors. They lose their furs but manage to escape with their scalps. While deciding how to retrieve their furs the two come across a wagon train. Hawkeye warns them of the danger they are in but is ignored. Needless to say the nasty Hurons' attack and Hawkeye and Chingachgook come to the rescue. They lead the settlers to safety , then straighten out the Hurons with a couple of left hooks and a tomahawk to the head. Great fun. Lon Chaney as Chingachgook looks like he is about to pass out after every 3-4 steps. The long time drinking must have been getting the best of him by this time. The show does feature real outside location shooting which is an added bonus. A harmless Sat morning type kids show.

Stubborn Pioneer

Those stubborn pioneers. If the native Indians did not get you, they can always have another try. You were bound to be fleeced by a local trading post.

Hawkeye and Chingachgook lose their furs to an Indian tribe but at least they are not scalped.

They end up protecting some settlers, the Carpenters. Although well armed for their journey, the gunpowder they bought turns out to be sand. The trader was conspiring with the Indian guide.

A fast paced adventure, at least Hawkeye shows cunning to trick the Indians by pretending the settlers have lots of gunpowder as they throw the sand on the floor.
