Humor, nipples (mens and womens), and flesh eating Zombies!!!
stjeff16 December 2006
This movie was about average for the Sci-Fi channel. Dean Cain added some humor. Not wanting to give away the plot let's just say this is the standard comedy with zombiesque "movie of the week" qualities.Mad scientist, Army men(Douglas Tait,) hot babes(Susan Ward,) One black Eddie Murphy type character(Guy Torry,)etc. Even though the formula was stale "Dead and Deader" is better than some of SF-C's movies. The female breast on the one corpse shocked me because it slipped past the sensors. So guys slow the Tivo when you see the metal examination tables. The effects were better than usual also because they didn't over use the CGI. Better stories are needed for us hard core fans.

Entertaining if you don't expect too much.
I caught the start of this on the Sci-fi channel a while back but I fell asleep before the end (not a testimony to how bad it was or anything, it was on at 3am). Much to my delight I found it for £3 online so I happily added it to my zombie collection.

The story revolves around Dean Cain who is dead, a zombie but not quite the evil kind unless he gets hungry (good idea to carry a bag of steaks around in his presence). He wants to get to the bottom of why he's dead yet alive.

There are some incredibly silly parts including the fact Dean Cain heals instantly every time he is hurt. How would his cells regenerate if he was dead? That and the overacting from his sidekick who steal's Will Smith's number one catchphrase.

If you're expecting a hardcore zombie film you'll be sorely disappointed. If you want a lighthearted look at the living dead with some nice green splatter special effects and Dean Cain flashing his man-boobs then this is exactly what you need.

A slightly above average 6 out of 10.

Okay Zombie Flick, Okay Story
Evaluator3 February 2007
This is a good one. Considering it's a TV movie it preforms really well and keeps the entertainment going throughout the movie. Some scenes tend to be bothersome, for example when the military truck breaks down. There was no scene that lead to that, it went from sitting there in truck to standing outside the broken down truck. It's almost like there was a scene before that and it was removed. Good movie with graphic violence which tends to keep people watching whether they want to admit it or not. Lots of random action /graphic violence scenes that happen out of nowhere. Caine always has something cocky to say after achieving something further in the story like killing a zombie. The only reason it didn't get a higher rating is because it wasn't a major motion picture. But it should have been. It surely doesn't compare to Dawn Of The Dead or like 28 days later, but it's still worth the watch. One thing I found interesting was they never used a whole load of CGI graphics like most TV movies do(excessively). For example the zombies are people dressed up as zombies not computer generated images. Even gun shots and things like that seem real. In one scene where Caine(Bobby) first meets the character "Johnson" and Johnson shoots the insect on the tile floor. The insect is destroyed but the tiles are left clean. You would think a double barrel shotgun would mark any floor in some which way or form. Enjoy the flick.

Typical zombie craziness
MartianOctocretr515 June 2008
A bunch of soldiers get blown up by a hand grenade. When the bodies are shipped home, one of the victims reanimates while his autopsy is being performed. How? A scorpion is living in his arm. Then his buddies do the same and they transform into zombies.

It's all just an excuse for the usual zombie formula: a few humans are getting picked off one by one by an ever-increasing mob of low-paid extras with some Halloween war paint yelling and screaming in deep-gurgle language. The humans always have dozens of guns and rifles that never seem to run out of ammunition, blasting the ghouls in the forehead or chest where they always seem to explode into red dye. Although this film takes a slight turn: a few of the infected have black blood; I guess the evil scientist and his scorpion minions had a hand in that. The dumb sidekick who won't shut his mouth and spews out lousy cultural reference jokes is just annoying; I kept hoping he'd get it.

Plenty of spraying blood and carcasses on the ground. It's got a lot of all the zombie necessities. The only thing it lacked apparently was a budget.

funky

Dead and Deader is about some insects that infect humans who then become flesh eating zombies. The star is infected, but cuts the insect out before it can fully infect him and helps the living get ride of the infected. I expected the film to be a real bomb, but it wasn't too bad for a cheap TV movie. Not too dark and not too gory as a small group of heroes take on the zombies and the don't ask don't tell military to save the world. Flakey fight scenes and poor fight camera work just make you dizzy watching it. I think I can attribute the film's appeal to the seasoned actors and a lighthearted storyline. It's not too serious and not the best technically, but not a total waste of time.

Amusing, for 20 minutes
sebpopcorn2 September 2008
A bunch of special forces soldiers in Cambodia get blown up and one of them wakes up on the autopsy table apparently fine, except he's got a scorpion inside his arm. He shows no life signs but is otherwise perfectly normal. His friends seem to have come off worse, waking up as more traditional people chomping zombies.

At first the situation seems quite interesting and you go along with it but the crappy Pulp Fiction style popular culture chats about movies and suchlike between the main character and the black sidekick quickly get very tedious.

I've got to give it a four out of fairness because it's watchable, but I didn't find it funny or really that interesting after the first half hour. Most people seem to have liked this one but I think that says more about the ever decreasing expectations of the audience than the quality of this movie. It's got some OK zombie moments and reasonable acting but they could have put all that military hardware and zombie makeup to far more entertaining use.

"Ever since I met you, my life's turned into a Thriller video!"
belisarius6917 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Yes, by all means, let's add DEAD AND DEADER to that long list of tired, played-out, low budgeted zombie flicks. A 2006 Sci-Fi Channel original movie (something the film shouldn't really take pride in), this one offers nothing new but still isn't all that bad as far as horror cinema goes. It's certainly gory enough as limbs and other body parts are torn pretty indiscriminately and frequently. Dean Cain, far removed from his LOIS & CLARK glory days and, it seems, also far removed from a 24 Hour Fitness gym, rises above his previous works and provides a dazzlingly mediocre turn as the show's undead hero. It's a good thing he brought funnyman Guy Torry with him, who provides wingman duties and those traditional sidekick jokes. Incidentally, Star Trek actors are in deeper financial straits than I thought if they've sunk to popping up in dreck like this (John Billingsley and Armin Shimerman).

Not to make a lame pun, but here come the SPOILERS. When a Special Forces combat unit does a recon at a Cambodian site which has lost contact with headquarters, the soldiers shockingly encounter ravenous, flesh-eating creatures. They engage the ghouls only to be rapidly overwhelmed. The only survivor is Lieutenant Bobby Quinn (Dean Cain), whose body is recovered and is pronounced DOA. However, Quinn revives just before he's buzzsawed into for autopsy, to the medic's casual disbelief. After he uses a scalpel to carve a scorpion out of his forearm and after the forearm subsequently heals itself, Quinn and the medical officers begin to smell something funny (and, no, it's not the forearm).

Suffice to say, Quinn very rapidly realizes he's become part zombie and is now endowed with super strength and a healing factor. And, as long as he chomps down on some raw, red meat every now and then, he's copacetic. Of course, he does still have that pasty complexion and has a tendency to spew green blood. The rest of the negligible plot involves Quinn, a wisecracking mess cook (Guy Torry), and a feisty bartender honey (Susan Ward) battling the undead as they strive to curtail the spreading zombie infection.

There isn't one original note here, not one. When the movie doesn't have its military characters reduced to spouting trite phrases such as "Stay frosty," it indulges in uninspired B-movie clichés. The special effects and stunts are universally cheesy, the dialogue corny, the acting performances pretty ho-hum (although Susan Ward is very, very nice to ogle at). Viewers will either enjoy Torry's one liners or be irked by them. To me, though, the film's funniest line isn't from Torry. It occurs when Quinn almost gobbles down his cute bartender friend and he apologizes by saying, "You know what they say, the fastest way to a man's heart is thru his stomach"

really nice humor and really OK time waste for horror fans
vdoebbelt25 December 2006
Well, i have seen better, i have seen worse... but now i just finished looking it and i nearly smiled all the time for the funny gags. If you liked the humor of other films, where they run around in deepest trouble and discuss the quality of other horror films, then it will fit your sense of humor, too. I won't give a plot summary here, for i am German and i hope, you forgive all faults that might appear. Back to topic: this film is for a TV-Production well done and if you are not the one, who aspects million dollars special-effects, but some that are compared to other zombie films very well done, it will be fun to you. Like i just wrote i just finished the film and during writing this i smile all the time for the gags that pass my mind. Well, like everything, it is a matter of taste *ggg*.....

"How the hell did you lose a body!?"
lost-in-limbo8 December 2012
Sometimes over-the-top, self-knowing humour can be very off putting and especially when it's trying to be a horror movie too. I thought the straight-to-TV enterprise "Dead and Deader" did a good job making these elements gel in something that was outrageous in the thrills with moments of grisly gore, but also amusing in its gags. The snappy script really did like to play up trivial movie references (where it even takes a dig at film-maker Michael Bay) and acknowledge its influences, thanks mainly to Susan Ward's stunning looking film geek character. Along for the on-the-run, buddy formula is Dean Cain (who's quite likable) as a walking dead solider and Guy Torry as the token smart talking army cook as they race against time to stop a zombie plague which could wipe out the entire nation. Also showing up in entertaining roles is Armin Shimerman, John Billingsley, Colleen Camp, Dean Haglund and the always imposing Peter Greene. While it looks on the cheap due to its budget restrictions, it is competently executed with some creative camera angles on show and decent effects (mutant scorpions) as bodies are pulled and ripped apart. While the pacing never lets up. The further along the story goes the more unhinged and kooky it gets within its developments and set-pieces. It's fairly dumb, but remains tacky fun and a lot better than numerous sci-fi originals. .

Fun movie for a Saturday night!
FriedBreadCafe16 December 2006
One thing I've always liked about Sci-Fi channel is their fun movies they like to produce themselves.

Army Lt. Bobby Quinn (Dean Cain) and his platoon are assigned to a special trip to Cambodia to find out why a secret scientific lab stopped sending communications to the United States, and upon arriving at the secret lab, they are confronted with dead soldiers and scientists who are zombies infected by a mysterious mutated species of insects that the lab was working on. The zombies attack and kill Cain and his platoon and are later discovered by another expedition sent in to investigate.

The second group transports Cain and his platoon back to the United States to another secret research compound where he is presumed dead and awaiting processing in the morgue, when he wakes up during autopsy. Although Lt. Cain was bitten and infected and died like his platoon, for some reason, he doesn't completely die and turn into a flesh eating monster like the other soldiers. Seems that he has something in his blood that limits his zombie traits although he does take on some of the characteristics of the zombies like needing to eat raw meat. He is told that he has to stay on the compound but Cain's platoon, now flesh eating zombies, start waking up and killing the military and scientific staff at the compound. During the confusion Lt. Cain escapes the military compound with the help of his new friend, army cook Hieronymous Judson (Guy Torry) who, by the way is very comedic. Judson, Cain's new sidekick, is very funny and provides plenty of comic relief throughout the movie. Keep your eye on Guy, I'm betting you see more of him in the future.

So, Caine and Judson go on a crusade to find the compound with the source of the infection in the other secret compound. In a bar where Cain and Judson stop for a bite to eat (ha ha) he meets a saucy bartender named Holly (Susan Ward), a beautiful but independent heroine that is typical modern American woman: she can beat you up while looking beautiful. When Cain is caught by local authorities to take him back to the military compound where he's accused of murder, Holly steps in and rescues him, and gets caught up in the crusade after she sees friends at the bar die at the hand of hungry munching zombies. As the movie progresses, it becomes obvious that Holly has a thing for Cain.

As these three go from location to location looking to destroy the source of the infections, and kill zombies, they encounter bad guys and plenty of hungry zombies who love a good fight. There's lots of humor and flirting going on between Cain and Holly, and lots of good fun and cheesy zombie effects. So people, when you watch a Sci-Fi movie like this, be glad that they choose to carry on the great tradition of weekend horror movies that provide light entertainment and enjoy them for what they are: fun times and some good scares and laughs. This movie is recommended for a good time with that good friend, some popcorn and your favorite beverage!

Enjoyable in an Entirely Unprecedented Way
gavin694219 April 2007
After dying in Cambodia, a team of soldiers wake up back in America to discover... they're not quite dead. But also, they're not quite alive. Bobby Quint (Dean Cain), the most human of the team, decides to stop the rest of the soldiers before they infect the whole world with their zombie illness.

There should be some discussion about what this film is, and what it isn't. While the film is funny to a point (or at least it doesn't take itself seriously), Fangoria's assertion it's a "zom-edy" like "48 Hours" is overstating this more than just a little. I enjoyed this film, but certainly didn't think it was really laugh-out-loud funny (for that, rent "Shaun of the Dead").

What this isn't is a high budget film with professional quality. It's a made-for-TV film from the Sci Fi channel. However, keeping in mind it's in this category, it's quite good. Unlike "Abominable", this film is decent... and considering it is made by a first time director, I was quite impressed with what they accomplished (calling in an all-star cast and Greg Nicotero for makeup was a good idea).

Also, this probably isn't a film for the general public. They might enjoy it, but I will say this: my number one reason for liking this film (besides the sexy Susan Ward) was the constant barrage of references to other films ("Dawn of the Dead", various James Bond films, "Bullet", etc.). If you're not a film geek, much of the humor will go over your head. The rip on Michael Bay was the bait for me, and the hook came with the lengthy analysis of "Dawn of the Dead" versus the remake (which correctly, in my opinion, pointed out the key differences including the consumerism aspect and Ken Foree's role in both films).

Much of the plot doesn't really make sense if you think about it and plot holes are more common here than one might like (and we are left with questions such as the sexual ability of zombies). But this film isn't here for the plot... it's here for showcasing makeup and was clearly made just to have fun. The makeup, by the way, is great... although some of the props -- such as a fake arm -- were sort of cheesy and filmed from poor angles.

If you're skeptical about this one, don't rent it. But for the right audience I think this film has something to offer. I certainly enjoyed what it was trying to do, even if some things seemed really thrown together hodge-podge (the witty black sidekick, the gratuitous shower scene). And if Sci Fi is showing this, keep your remote control on the coffee table, because this is the best thing you'll get out of them for a while.

Gore and giggles. Peculiar zombie flick.
michaelRokeefe15 April 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Give credit to director Patrick Dinhut for taking the real stupid out of a zombie movie. It is very interesting and your intelligence is not necessarily compromised. Bobby Quin(Dean Caine)is a Special Forces soldier who dies in a secret mission in Cambodia. Well, almost dies? He is flown back in a body bag like the rest of his unit. In California, on the autopsy table, Quin awakens with no vital signs, but a shred of humanity and unbelievable powers and abilities. Knowing that he and his unit were infected by a zombie virus, Quin searches for his fellow undead in determination to keep the rest of the world from being victim of the strange illness. Amongst the gore is clichéd humor. The special effects are above being average and some even disturbing. Other stars include: Susan Ward, Guy Torry, Ellie Cornell, John Billingsley and Natassia Malthe. For those with a zombie fetish...come get your fix.

Simply Awful!
bfkennedy17 December 2006
I've been very impressed with some Sci Fi Channel productions, most notably the recent miniseries "The Lost Room." This movie effort was not one of them. I enjoy zombie flicks as much as the next person, and cheesy special effects are always good for a laugh, but this vehicle did not use those elements to good effect. Obviously a parody of other zombie films (with dialog comparing the original "Night of the Living Dead" with the remake), it brings nothing new or funny to the genre. It can be done, as "Shaun of the Dead" showed so well. Overall, the production values were too low, the plot too thin, too many goofs to note, and poor dialog much of the time. A throwaway evil villain added very little other than another tired one-liner. I will agree with other comments that the performance by Guy Torry was the one bright spot in the film. He will be one to watch in future projects.

Productions companies take note...
mooksta14 November 2007
You don't need an intelligent script. ("More holes than a Michael bay film"....yes, but Michael Bay films are watchable!!)

You don't need quality acting. (The master at work indeed...Dean Cain....look at him go...)

You don't need to make sense. (Scorpions turn you into a zombie!!)

You don't need to spend money. (Marvel at the effects)

Throw any old junk together. Don't spend to much time developing it or making it or even caring about what your doing.

Why do all Starz Media films start with a bunch of soldiers in the jungle? Then proceed into the realms of utter nonsense?

Yes the internet may be contributing to the demise of fine feature films but drivel like this being made and then being reviewed as "Great", "Excellent movie" and "Better than expected." can't be helping.

Films like this a lowering the quality bar.

There will always be an audience for this type of terrible movie and they'll always claim:-

"It's a great movie, best zombie flick ever" - What other zombie films have you seen exactly?

"Ideal for Saturday night fun!" You really should get out more if you think Saturday night would be improved by this.

"Better than expected" That says it all, you thought it'd be a bad movie before you watched it.......so why did you watch it? If you thought "Fire may burn my body" would you then jump into a fire to see if it's a bad a burning as you thought?

Unless...

How many of the reviewers above actually work for the company that produced the film. Does IMDb double check this?

I'm lucky, I'm being paid to watch this drivel. I'd advise you to avoid it (and anything else Starz Media produces) if your not in such a fortunate position.

However if your a brain dead text jockey, suffering from an excess of forehead grease, who gets his jollies off by seeing more blood, more bad acting, nonsensical plots and some very feeble post modernist pop culture references...then this is the movie for you!

They have the cheek to have a pop at Michael bay in this film, his films may have plot holes but they're far superior to this hokum! And ultimately more watchable and more profitable.

Film making used to an art form once......

Surprisingly good little zombie film.
poolandrews17 May 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Dead & Deader starts 'Somewhere in Cambodia...' as a five man special ops team try to establish contact with a medical team, however things don't go according to plan & they are attacked by flesh eating zombies. In the ensuing fight a grenade is used which kills everyone... Cut to 'Fort Preston, California' where the soldier's bodies have been taken, as he is about to be autopsied Lt. Robert Quinn (Dean Cain) suddenly springs back to life. Elsewhere his special ops buddies also return to life but they come back as ravenous flesh eating zombies unlike Quinn who is relatively normal & considerably more sociable. People have a hard time believing he is one of the walking dead & that a virus is being spread that turns the infected into flesh eating zombies, Quinn decides he has to go it alone & stop the ever growing zombie hordes...

Originally made for cable TV & directed by Patrick Dinhut I was extremely surprised to discover that Dead & Deader is a highly entertaining light hearted comedy horror that delivers on both counts. The script by Mark A. Altman & Steven Kriozere which doesn't take itself seriously at all is a lot of fun, it moves along at a great pace & it never bored me. The buddy buddy relationship between Quinn & the cook was pretty funny & they traded one-liners with each other to good effect. There are also lots of self referential dialogue & some really amusing references to other films, I loved the discussion Quinn has with Holly where they debate which version of Dawn of the Dead is better & Holly's passioned speech about why the original is! There's lines about Star Wars (1977), who was the best James Bond, Bullit (1968), an amusing moment when Quinn says 'I smell dead people' in an obvious The Sixth Sense (1999) homage, there are several nods towards superheros including Superman in an attempt to take the mickey out of Cain & a closing line straight from Casablanca (1942)! I thought it worked very well & I must admit I smiled on a few occasions, this type of constant referential dialogue may not appeal to everyone & you may not catch everything first time around. There's some decent horror here as well, there's enough blood & gore to satisfy although during the final 30 odd minutes when it tries to introduce it's main villain & it becomes more serious in tone it loses some of what it had built up. Having said that I was impressed, I mean when I knew this was had been made for cable & starred Dead Cain who would probably attend the opening of an envelope for money these days I feared the worse but maybe it's because I had such low expectations that I liked it so much?

Director Dinhut does OK, he keeps things moving along & the action scenes are pretty well handled. I wouldn't say it's scary or gratuitous but it's funny & has a few decent horror sequences. There's some gore including a hand in a mincer, various gunshot wounds, someone head is sliced in a ceiling fan, there are bitten throats, decapitation by meat cleaver, there a few zombie scenes where they feast upon various severed limbs & a decent amount of blood splattered around the place.

Technically the film is pretty good, it certainly looks a lot better than a lot of cheap made for cable offerings. The acting is good, Susan Ward makes for good eye candy for the boys & Cain will provide the same for the girls.

Dead & Deader far exceeded my expectations which were admittedly none existent, I really liked this humorous fun little zombie film & would definitely recommend it if not for the fact there are already plenty of reviews that totally slate it so maybe I'm in the minority when I reckon it's a great film. If you get the opportunity watch it & decide for yourself...

A Good Stupid Flick
rcbridii29 November 2007
This is the kind of stupid horror film I miss from the '80s and '90s. It's not focused on being shocking, but on being entertaining, funny, and only mildly disturbing. A zombie movie should be funny (Romero can pull off a semi-serious zombie... but we've seen the failure that was the 28 Days movies)and that's what you get with this movie. It's a ridiculous premise, and that's fine given the nature of the movie. It's filled with dumb clichés and that works for this kind of movie. It's a good laugh movie for people who like dumb zombie flicks. Nothing more. Nothing less. It has the silly horror humor of classics like The Stuff. There is not a serious thing in this movie.

funny zombie action
afmarra197617 December 2006
This movie was much much better than what I was expecting. The action was exciting, the acting decent, and the writing very funny. It had a ton of "in jokes" for horror movie fans, and movie buffs in general. Although it was mostly a comedy, it wasn't light on horror, action or gore. The main villain was very creepy in a soft-spoken way. Susan Ward's character was awesome! Tough and sexy, yet a movie geek at heart. Where can I find a woman like that? haha The zombies in the film were great! They had the zombie-walk down, but were a bit quicker than the average Romero ghoul. My only complaint is the bitten victims became zombies a little too quickly. The whole scorpion thing was an interesting twist also. All in all, an excellent movie. I can't wait to own it when it comes out on DVD.

GUY TORRY RULES in this slightly unique Zombie Flick
metalminister16 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
For a low budget "B" made for T.V. movie, it was the best zombie movie this year!

What made this one slightly different than the others 1#)is that an ancient Cambodian scorpion infects humans thus turning them into flesh eating zombies. 2#) dean Cain's character was infected but he cuts out the Bug in time so the virus does not reach his heart,in-turn gives him extra abilities, but he is not a full blown zombie! Susan ward(Malibu Shores & Shallow Hal) was surprisingly good in this movie as a tough bartender caught in the middle of this zombie mess resulting in her teaming up with dean and guy.

But what makes this movie a 100x better than the others is Guy Torry! He is so talented whether he is in a Drama, Comedy, Sci-Fi, or his stand up (which you can catch on this seasons def comedy jam) he always gives you a laugh that will stick with you for a lifetime!!! I was expecting this movie to suck but I was wrong...10 out of 10!!!!!

Great B-Rated horror?
DEADxBABIESxINC20 December 2006
I gave this movie a 8/10 just cuz they show it on scifi and kept a lot of the bloody scenes in...most of the time...well if you've ever seen a horror movie on A&E for example or late at night on TBS...you know what i mean. But the special effects aren't amazing...but they are great for a low budget movie. Its funny, gory, Dean Cain can still act! Susan Ward was great as she is hot! I didn't even know she was in it...but i'd recommend seeing this cuz its just fun for being on a scifi and not the big screen...heck i'm gonna buy it on DVD if i can find it :) p.s. not everything in movies has to make sense to be enjoyable...sometimes its just gotta be fun to watch!

LOL at the zombies!
Denatir19 April 2007
Not a bad movie at all. The action was good, the acting was pretty good, and the story was original. Keeping up with the references was fun, one that no one has mentioned here is the conversation in the cooler when Judson asks Quinn to use his heat vision to make a fire and warm the place up. Quinn replies, "I don't HAVE heat vision." (obvious reference to Lois & Clark, where Cain played Superman) Pretty good movie to entertain you for a few hours, just don't expect the grand settings and effects that come with a big budget zombie flick. It's a great movie to laugh with and doesn't take itself too seriously. Rent it or catch it on the Sci-Fi channel, you won't be sorry. (Unless you are VERY serious about your zombie flicks)

A pleasant surprise, Although not without It's Faults
I wasn't expecting much from this, but ended up being pleasantly surprised. First off I'll get the bad out of the way. The Kevin Smith style humor, and one liners were pretty hit and miss. I generally liked the cast, they had chemistry, and I found them amusing, however some of the lines were totally copied from Smith's films. Including a rant on who the better James Bond was between Roger Moore, and Sean Connery. And even the humorous moment where Timothy Dalton was mentioned. If you've seen those films, then you know what I mean. Another mild compliant is I loved Armin Shimmerman's character, and would have liked to have seen him with more screen time. Now with that out of the way, I'll get to the overwhelming good. First off the blood and gore effects were top notch. For what was mostly a lighthearted comedy/horror, it gets pretty darn messy. Heads being exploded from ceiling fans, scorpions torn out from inside a person's flesh, and more. It definitely came through for us gore hounds. And the cast, although again some humor fell flat, delivered. All in all, a very good movie. Check it out.

"Green blood... who are you,Shrek?"

From that line of the movie, you're probably guessing that there's plenty of humor in this movie.Well, you're right. But there's more comedy and action than horror in 'Dead & Deader'. In fact,it isn't scary or suspenseful. But that doesn't mean that this movie doesn't deliver. This movie movie definitely delivers, and in this case,it delivers buckets of gore and entertainment that almost reaches 'Dawn of the Dead'.We should all give Dean Cain a big round of applause, because if he wasn't in this movie, then it wouldn't be as good as I'm describing it right now.So there's good news for all of you people who enjoy extremely gory and funny mayhem that make a movie as good as 'Dead & Deader'.

Entertaining zombie opus

Warning: Spoilers
"Dead and Deader" is one of more fun zombie entries out there.

**SPOILERS**

After a mission in Cambodia, Lt. Bobby Quinn, (Dean Cain) arrives back in the US pronounced dead, though he is still alive. When Dr. Boyce, (Natassia Malthe) determines that he is dead but is still able to function in all other areas. Realizing that the other soldiers in his squad, Private Sanderson, (Tyson Turrou) Landgon, (John Billingsley) and Reed, (Jackson Bolt) have become infected like him, though no one believes him. Learning of their re-location status, he escapes from capture with Hieronymous Judson, (Guy Torry) and Holly, (Susan Ward) and goes out to find them, fearing they have escaped as well. After learning that he became infected through a mythical Cambodian scorpion that turns it's victims into flesh-eating zombies, they race to stop it before it gets out and infects others around them.

The Good News: This was one of the most impressive zombie films around. A lot of that goodwill is directed towards it's great story. Radiation leaks and chemical spills have been done many times before, and while it's okay to do that, this one throws in a different version for the virus and actually seems thought out rather nicely, complete with actions, repercussions and more. Overall, that is fantastic and merely serves to make the zombies that much stronger. The fact that there's also a change to them is rather nice, as the main one is allowed to speak, form thoughts and reason, re-gather memories and many unique skills and traits that most zombies are never even considered to have. All of this is due to the flexibility given to it from the strong story. The zombies themselves look really nice as well, from the decaying flesh and facial wounds to their shambling look and feel, which is really appropriate for a zombie film. Among the better features from that is the film is incredibly action-packed, having a ton of it here that is just fun to watch on any level. The opening scene in Cambodia is great with their sudden appearance in the creepy ruins of the disabled security compound, the confrontation in the funeral home is really nice and the extended diner sequence is one of three stand-outs in here, mainly for the ironic opening, the sheer chaos of their attack on the patrons unleashing a sea of blood, and then the gunfire-laced shootout to escape, giving it some wonderful and glorious moments. The other two stand-outs maybe just as good, and neither one ever really tops the other two. The sequence in the kitchen is fantastic, mixing in just about everything to make it exciting. There's a knockdown brawl that causes some collateral damage to the surroundings, a couple of inventive tactics to rid the enemies, a bunch of blood and gore, some nice jokes and even manages to throw in some more surprises to keep it from being boring. The other big scene is the over-the-top and just plain enjoyable finale, which is so much fun it should be illegal. It's almost impossible to list everything right that it does, but it's still one of the single best scenes in the film. What's even better about it is that, along with the rest of the film, there's some really nice humor in this. It's a lot of self-deprecating wits and remarks, but the main one is the dissection of a zombie film and it's remake while in the middle of battle, which is laugh-out-loud funny especially since one of them is a zombie. There's also some situational gags and playful humor which are nicely included and don't take away from the film. The last big plus is here is the really great gore on display. This is just insanely bloody, as limbs are ripped off and bitten into, throats are torn open, knives are stabbed into various orifices, there's a really wicked decapitation with a spinning room fan and bullet wounds galore, splattering everywhere and making this one a real mess. Overall, these were the film's good points.

The Bad News: There wasn't much wrong here. The fact that the zombies are given the minor change, here with all their abilities mentioned earlier, are a radical change for most zombie fans and might take offense with the change, but some might not. The other problem here is two brief scenes that really don't offer much to the film. The scenes with the two on the road is a one-note joke that wears thin easily and quickly, while the scenes of them captured don't serve much purpose other than naming the virus and getting the gore, which could've been done easier and rid the film of it's painful chained-together chase. These, though, are the film's only flaws.

The Final Verdict: An incredibly impressive zombie film that has a lot going for it and only marginal flaws, giving this one a really great feel and appearance. Definitely give it a watch if you're into the genre at all, a fan of the Sci-Fi Channel Creature Features or the plain interested, otherwise there's not a whole lot who won't like it.
