The Phoenix Film Festival Contest
It’s back again for those of us living in the land of cacti and oppressive heat. Time to break out the lanyards and the program guide to find out which upcoming film needs to be seen. One of the benefits of this festival being here in the valley is that unlike Sundance and Tribeca the lines and weather aren’t an impediment to seeing some great films from some great filmmakers.
From big to small, this festival is a nice cheese plate when comparing it to heavyweight entrees like Cannes or Toronto. And if you’re interested in going gratis to see four films at no cost then please e-mail me at Christopher_Stipp@yahoo.com...

We have an exclusive Kevin Smith interview clip from the 2-Disc DVD release of "Official Rejection" called "Rejection Collection" which comes out today. Filmmaker Kevin Smith (Clerks) appears in Official Rejection, the acclaimed comedic documentary about the experiences of indie filmmakers on the festival circuit. This clip is from Kevin's extended, never-before-seen 28-minute interview, a special feature which appears on the film's 2-Disc "Rejection Collection" DVD. This edition also contains extended interviews with Jenna Fischer ("The Office"), Lloyd Kaufman ("The Toxic Avenger") and indie film guru Chris Gore, as well as two commentary tracks, deleted scenes, and more.

We have been following the awesome documentary “Official Rejection” for quite a few months now. We brought you one of the very first reviews of the film and a very detailed 5 part audio interview with filmmaker Paul Osborne. We are also gearing up to bring you a very cool contest based on the film that I will announce soon.
I was talking with Paul yesterday and he mentioned that he was about to release a new video promoting the film. I took a look at it and knew it was something I had to post on here. Indie film icon Lloyd Kaufman is one of the (very lively) interview subjects of the film. When ‘Official Rejection’ played the deadCENTER film festival, Lloyd Kaufman went to go see it for the first time. Here is a little video of Lloyd’s reaction.

New York City’s VisionFest 09, which bills itself as “The Other Festival,” takes place June 17-21 at Tribeca Cinemas (54 Varick St.), and like any self-respecting film event, it has some scares in its lineup. The most notable will be the NYC premiere of Blood River, the latest feature from Broken and The Devil’S Chair’s Adam Mason.
Blood River revolves around a couple whose seemingly perfect marriage begins to unravel after they suffer a blowout while driving through the desolate Nevada desert. They come upon an abandoned town, and a mysterious stranger who begins to deconstruct their lives even more. The movie screens on Friday, June 19 (accompanied by two shorts) at 9:30 p.m.
Serving as the opening-night attraction on Wednesday, June 17 at 8 p.m. is Dominic Perez’s feature debut Evil Things. This indie chiller (which we first told you about here) follows five college students whose weekend...

The 2009 Phoenix Film Festival officially gets underway tonight at the Harkins Scottsdale 101 theaters. The week-long event will host over 150 films including Disney's upcoming Earth, the indie flick 500 Days of Summer with Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the 50s UFO comedy Alien Trespass, Guillermo Arriaga's The Burning Plain with Charlize Theron, the horror flick Grace (which made people faint at Sundance), and Michael Keaton's The Merry Gentleman.
Having attended the festival the past six years, I can tell you that if you can't get into one of the films above, you should do yourself a favor and spend 90 minutes or so with the many short film programs they have every year. There are always some real worthy shorts at the Phoenix Film Festival.
The festival will also mark the world premiere of the documentary Official Rejection, which chronicles filmmakers being snubbed by film festivals and features interviews with Kevin Smith and Jenna Fischer,...
