The biggest winner of the day was Sarah Paulson, who claimed the coveted Distinguished Performance Award for her fiery role in “Appropriate.” That play, by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, also took home the League’s trophy for Best Revival of a Play.

Nominations for the 2024 Outer Critics Circle Awards were announced on Tuesday, April 23. The stars of the hit Broadway revival of “Merrily We Roll Along,” Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez and Daniel Radcliffe, read off the nominees live from the Museum of Broadway.
Off-Broadway productions ultimately out-paced Broadway with this critics group. The new David Yazbek musical “Dead Outlaw” led the pack with nine nominations. It was followed by “The Connector,” another Off-Broadway musical, and “Stereophonic,” a lauded Broadway play, with seven nominations each.
While there are no Tony nominators in the Outer Critics Circle membership, these nominations can provide some clues as to how theater aficionados are thinking about this season’s Tony race. Of the five productions cited for Best New Broadway Musical, only “Days of Wine and Roses” and “Suffs” made the cut in the all-important Best Score category. Nominations for the 39th Annual Lucille Lortel Awards were announced today by Amber Iman and George Abud, two stars of Broadway’s “Lempicka.” The Lortels honor outstanding achievement in Off-Broadway theater. The 2024 ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 5 at NYU Skirball Center. The Lucille Lortel Awards are produced by the Off-Broadway League and Lucille Lortel Theatre, with additional support provided by Tdf.
It’s common for productions to begin their life Off-Broadway before transferring to the Main Stem, so many of this year’s Tony Awards hopefuls are among the list of Lortel nominations. Chief among these contenders is “Hell’s Kitchen,” the semi-autobiographical musical from Alicia Keys. That tuner garnered five Lortel nominations. These include Best Musical, Best Choreography for Camille A. Brown, a Lead Performer bid for Maleah Joi Moon, and Featured Performer bids for Shoshana Bean and Kecia Lewis. All performance categories at the Lortel Awards are gender neutral.

Kanye West has reportedly replaced his teeth with titanium “teeth.”
Photos posted to his Instagram story showed the rapper with his mouth open with the custom titanium dentures.
The procedure cost West around $850,000 and was done by Beverly Hills dentist Thomas Connelly. Connelly, who is considered the father of diamond dentistry, has Offset, Chris Brown and Lil Yachty as celebrity clients.
The procedure is considered “experimental dentistry.” The teeth were reportedly designed by Kanye himself.
According to insiders, West’s new grills are permanent and are the first of their kind.

Watch out! This post contains spoilers.
At the end of "What We Do in the Shadows" season four, Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) makes the drastic decision to ask Derek (Chris Sandiford) to turn him into a vampire. Fed up after years of his master, Nandor (Kayvan Novak), ignoring his pleas, he decides to get it done himself.
But at the beginning of the show's fifth season - which premiered in July - we find out Guillermo's turning didn't work. Or it did work, but only a little bit. At the start of the season, it's been 16 days and the typical vampire powers haven't fully come in for him, which is highly irregular. Guillermo can still eat food (though he does crave very rare meat) and go out in the sun. He can't, however, turn into a vampire bat and fly away.
Over the course of the season, we ultimately find out why Guillermo's transformation didn't work.

Found footage horror evolves in an unexpected way: the Paramount horror movie series Paranormal Activity has a stage play in the works.
THR reports that “Simon Friend, the veteran producer who brought Life of Pi to Broadway, has picked up the license to the Paramount horror movie series with the intent of bringing it to the West End via his Simon Friend Entertainment.”
The stage play adaptation of Paranormal Activity is in early development and set to be penned by Levi Holloway, who previously wrote Grey House.
The 2007 found footage film that started it all, Paranormal Activity, was written and directed by Oren Peli. The microbudget feature, made on very little money, wound up grossing $193.4 million globally and successfully launched a franchise still going strong with Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, most recently released in 2021 on Paramount+. The movies have grossed almost $900 million theatrically, THR reports.

Plot: Two backpacking Canadians (Julia Garner & Jessica Henwick) find themselves low on cash and work as bartenders in a small pup in a remote mining town in Australia.
Review: Kitty Green’s The Royal Hotel is exceptional for about ninety percent of its running time. Beautifully shot at an abandoned bar in Yatina, South Australia, a town that consists of only twenty-nine people, the movie is a thoroughly compelling look at the culture of booze, brawling, and misogyny in remote Australia and what happens when two regular, North American girls are dropped right in the middle of it. But, the finale gets a little too close to straight-ahead thriller territory, ending what had up to then been a compelling drama about menace and the constant threat of violence on a somewhat false note. It starts like Wake in Fright but ends like Straw Dogs, and the switch-up doesn’t work.

In this time of geekery and craft reigning supreme, film critics and academics no longer reject horror movies with the knee-jerk certainty some once did. But even now the specter of “elevated horror” (see that concept’s lambasting in Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s “Scream 5”) looms over discussions of artier explorations of dread and terror — Ari Aster’s “Midsommar,” Luca Guadagnino’s “Suspiria,” Rose Glass’ “Saint Maud” — that are clearly distinguished from, well, non-elevated horror. The general gist is that these exceptions to the “horror is bad” rule engage your brain more than just showing brains: eaten by zombies or splattered against the wall.

Ranking as one of my favorite genre movies of this century is writer/director Mitchell Lichtenstein’s 2007 vagina dentata horror comedy Teeth (watch it Here), which I find makes for a good double feature pairing with another one of my favorites, the 2000 werewolf coming-of-age movie Ginger Snaps. Teeth doesn’t seem to get referenced very often – so I was glad to hear (via Deadline) that it’s getting a bit of a revival. A Strange Loop playwright Michael R. Jackson has written a musical stage play adaptation of Teeth, and it’s expected to make its Off Broadway debut in February 2024!
Jackson wrote the Teeth stage play book with Anna K. Jacobs, with Jacobs providing the music and Jackson writing the lyrics.
Lichtenstein’s film had the following set-up: Dawn (Jess Weixler) is an active member of her high-school chastity club but when she meets Tobey (Hale Appleman), nature takes its course,...

Monsters in the horror genre are endlessly nuanced. They can be physically daunting, emotionally horrifying, violent, manipulative, abject, paranormal, and so on. But a consistent thread is that they all start from somewhere. Now, we may not have the luxury of being granted a fully fleshed-out backstory for every monstrous creature, villain, or anti-hero ever to grace the screen, but we can normally chalk their inception up to two scenarios: They're either deeply othered non-human beings, invading the norm and representative of an external threat on society, or there are homegrown, society-made monsters — an amalgamation of humanity's pitfalls, ugliness, and actions that led to a creation that reflecting humanity's misdeeds back to it.

Mitchell Lichtenstein's 2007 horror film "Teeth" has a notable premise. A young woman named Dawn (Jess Weixler) has just joined a Christian abstinence group and has elected to leave sex out of her life until she is able to be married. At about the same time, however, Dawn finds that she has a series of razor-sharp teeth in her vagina. This development terrifies her, but she also finds that it can fight back against the multiple men who attempt to assault her throughout the film. Several men will not exit the film wholly intact. "Teeth" is an excellent coming-of-age drama that confronts backward notions of sexual purity, angrily addresses the constant objectification of adolescent women, and is a wonderfully wicked tale of feminist vengeance. It was one of the best films of 2007.

Here’s something we didn’t have on our horror bingo card this week: a stage musical adaptation for 2007’s cult horror comedy Teeth is in the works.
Deadline reports that Michael R. Jackson, the Pulitzer and Tony award-winning playwright of A Strange Loop, is working on an adaptation set for an Off Broadway debut next year.

Michael R. Jackson, the Pulitzer- and Tony-winning playwright of A Strange Loop, is sinking his choppers into a stage musical adaptation of the 2007 cult horror-comedy film Teeth, set for an Off Broadway debut next year.
The musical, announced today as part of Playwrights Horizons’ 2023-24 season, will feature lyrics by Jackson, music by Anna K. Jacobs and a book co-written by both. Previews will begin in February 2024.
The 2007 film is a very dark horror-comedy concerning “vagina dentata,” written and directed by Mitchell Lichtenstein. As described by Playwrights Horizons, the musical, like the film, will follow Dawn O’Keefe, “an evangelical Christian teen with a powerful secret not even she understands – when men violate her, her body bites back. Literally.”

An alchemical catastrophe ravaged the countryside decades ago, unleashing horrors beyond comprehension upon a cursed corner of 18th-century England. The Crown has quarantined the area, known as Vale of Deluth, but as a Hunter, you are allowed entry to help drive back the monstrous beasts that lurk within. This is the world of Teeth, a new tabletop RPG from Jim Rossignol and Marsh Davies that just hit Kickstarter. In order to get a better sense of their new game of occult criminality and monster hunting, we had a chat with them about their history and inspirations.
Both Rossignol and Davies worked in the video game industry prior to working on Teeth. Rossignol was a founder of Rock Paper Shotgun and developed games such as Sir You Are Being Hunted and The Signal From Tolva. The 5 Seconds of Summer Show, the tenth anniversary celebration that the pop-rock band hosted at the close of 2021, was part career-spanning concert film and part Saturday Night Live skit poking fun at their decade-long evolution. It featured a recreation of the video for one of their earliest releases — 2012’s “Gotta Get Out” — alongside their biggest hits, like “Youngblood” and “She Looks So Perfect,” and a funeral for their faded black skinny jeans. But the one thing that has never changed about 5Sos is their commitment to delivering an unrelenting live show.

Both Dungeons and Dragons already have a bit of a horror element to them, but most D&d campaigns end up being fun romps like the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which brings the property back to the big screen this weekend.
If you’re looking for a tabletop RPG that will send your adventure down a bit darker road, however, you should check out any of these horror-themed fantasy tabletop RPGs that would make for great campaigns…

There are few fantasy RPGs that are more in-your-face grim than the doom metal inspired Mork Borg. The book is most notable for its extremely aggressive art and layout, basically screaming the details of its hopeless world directly in your face. A new mother is haunted by disturbing visions from her own mother's past and a growing distrust of her newborn in Graveyard of Lost Children, the new horror novel from author Katrina Monroe (They Drown Our Daughters). Ahead of the book's May 9th publication from Poisoned Pen Press (an imprint of Sourcebooks), we've been provided with the first two chapters to share with Daily Dead readers!
Once She Has Her Grip On You, She'll Never Let You Go.
At four months old, Olivia Dahl was almost murdered. Driven by haunting visions, her mother became obsessed with the idea that Olivia was a changeling, and that the only way to get her real baby back was to make a trade with the "dead women" living at the bottom of the well. Now Olivia is ready to give birth to a daughter of her own…and for the first time, she hears the women whispering.

(Welcome to Scariest Scene Ever, a column dedicated to the most pulse-pounding moments in horror with your tour guides, horror experts Chris Evangelista and Matt Donato. In this edition, Chris tells you to remember to "Smile.")
"Smile" is the biggest horror movie of the year, box office-wise, and I'll confess I didn't love the film when I first saw it (you can read my less-than-positive review right here!). But after revisiting the film recently I confess that I was a little too hard on "Smile" during my first viewing. Sure, it's not very original. But it's an effective, creepy, and surprisingly nasty studio horror pic with some disturbing gore and a great creature that pops up in the final moments. And it's those final moments we're here to talk about.
Which means spoilers follow.
The Setup
There's a demon and/or supernatural force out there that latches onto you for about a week.

We’ve ranked final girls and villainesses. We’ve remembered Fay Wray and honored Jamie Lee Curtis. We’ve ruminated on director Mary Lambert’s “Pet Sematary,” celebrated star Jess Weixler kicking the hell out of “Teeth,” and considered the limitations imposed by so-called sanity in “Carrie,” “Unsane,” and more psychological fright fests.
We’ve waxed poetic about our favorite horror movies and pestered genre goddesses of all kinds to do same with Kristen Connolly (“The Cabin in the Woods”), Leigh Janiak (“Fear Street”), Thora Birch (“Hocus Pocus”), Barbara Crampton (“Re-Animator”), Milly Shapiro (“Hereditary”), Essie Davis (“The Babadook”), and more weighing in. Heck, Cassandra Peterson — yes, the Elvira — even sat us down for a whole conversation picking apart what sets her Halloween-loving heart aflutter, in an interview that also explores the LGBTQ underpinnings of countless scary movies.

Mitchell Lichtenstein’s cult classic “Teeth” sure still has bite. As “Teeth” celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, it’s only fitting to look back on the legacy of the “vagina dentata” origin story. Written and directed by Lichtenstein, “Teeth” stars Jess Weixler as Dawn, a high school student who has committed her body to the Promise, an abstinence group that preaches on the unlawful act of sex.
The at-times outrageously campy film has a foreboding score reminiscent of “The Room” crossed with a misplaced fever dream ode to John Carpenter, framing Dawn’s dedication to keeping herself pure like a character trait one of the many victims of a slasher may have. The blonde-haired, blue-eyed virgin has a distinct memory of being digitally penetrated by her creepy step-brother as a child…and let’s just say, neither of them forget it.
Is Dawn our final girl? Not quite.

Welcome to IndieWire’s Seven Days of Scream Queens! October is flying by faster than Mary Sanderson on a vacuum cleaner, so we’re taking a batty beat to honor the impact women and queer people have had on the horror genre since its inception.
“Scream queen” is a maddeningly nebulous term with simple enough origins. The phrase was popularized among casting directors after the iconic performance of Fay Wray in 1933’s “King Kong” and would be used for decades to describe genre actresses from Janet Leigh in 1960’s “Psycho” to her daughter Jamie Lee Curtis in 1978’s “Halloween” and beyond. These days it’s tossed around with some frequency, used interchangeably — and incorrectly — with the term “final girl”: the last character (most often played by women but they can be of any gender expression!) alive in a slasher movie.
Scream queens, it seems to us, are more than that.

“I had an intuition,” reveals Gabby Beans on her approach to playing Sabina in “The Skin of Our Teeth.” The “very meta” role in the revival of Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize winning play requires an immense stamina from the actress, as she takes the character across three acts full of allegory, physical comedy and apocalyptic disasters. Her intuition proved to be right on the money, as she earned a Tony Award nomination for Lead Actress in a Play, the first of her career, for her Broadway debut. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Those who witnessed her performance as Sabina will be shocked to hear Beans’ actual speaking voice. It sits in a relaxed tone at the back of her throat. A far cry from the hyper-stylized, high-pitched dramatics she employed when making her entrance on “Teeth’s” mid century modern Act 1 set. The performer confesses she actually used...

Eighty years after Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “The Skin of Our Teeth” debuted on Broadway, the sprawling work has returned to the New York stage in a lavish production at Lincoln Center. Unspooling over three distinct periods of history in its three acts, “Teeth” blends the modern with the Paleolithic as the Anthrobus family and their maid Sabina withstand environmental and human devastation as the great world spins.
In this production, which opened at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre on April 25, the Anthrobus family and the majority of the cast are portrayed by Black actors. Lileana Blain-Cruz directs the large ensemble cast, which includes James Vincent Meredith and Roslyn Ruff as Mr. and Mrs. Anthrobus, Gabby Beans as their maid Sabina, and Priscilla Lopez as the fortune teller in the second act. This production also features contributions and some revisions by Pulitzer-finalist Branden Jacobs-Jenkins.

As horror fans already know, body horror is a niche yet versatile sub-genre, with David Cronenberg as its patron saint. Still, there’s plenty of room for things other than the new flesh, like 2007’s “Teeth,” last year’s Palme d’Or winner “Titane,” or 1989’s “Society.”

HBO Max and DC enlisted Rooster Teeth, which is also part of the WarnerMedia family, to produce “Podly,” a series recapping “Peacemaker” episodes. Audiences can watch “Podly” on HBO Max and on the official YouTube channels for DC and HBO Max beginning Jan. 13, when “Peacemaker” premieres. An audio-only version available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and other major audio platforms.
“Peacemaker,” an eight-episode spinoff series from 2021 movie “The Suicide Squad,” was created and written by the film’s director, James Gunn. Both Gunn and Cena will be among the cast and creatives making an appearance on “Podly.” The companion podcast is hosted by Fiona Nova and Ify Nwadiwe, who will provide a recap reacting to the latest episode of “Peacemaker” each week.

Exclusive: Paramount’s genre division Paramount Players has tapped Night Teeth and I See You filmmaker Adam Randall to direct the horror pic Curfew.
The former Blood List entry follows a rebellious teenage girl who is sent to stay with her grandmother in a sleepy town whose quirky traditions include a curfew banning anyone from going out at night. When the girl ventures out after dark she discovers the murky truth behind the town’s mysterious history.
Randall told us: “This is a fun monster movie that harks back to Amblin movies of yore. There is an intriguing conflict between the teenage girl and the older generations but it also has the thrills and action of a monster movie. It’s a great script.”
Script comes from Isa Mazzei (Cam). Jaki Bradley and Kevin Armento did previous revisions. Dick Grunert wrote the original spec that made it onto the 2017 Blood List.

While Terrence Malick toils away in the editing room on his much-anticipated The Way of the Wind, he’s found time to back a few other projects. Following the globe-trotting documentary Awaken, he’s also lent his expertise to a new VR project that will be previewed at Cannes.
A reunion with Badlands producer Edward R. Pressman, who also executive produced the project alongside Malick, this new work is titled Evolver-Prologue and comes from VR studios Atlas V and Marshmallow Laser Feast, Variety reports. While nine minutes will be previewed at Cannes, the full 30-40 minute piece is aiming to debut at the festival in 2022.
With an original soundtrack by Jonny Greenwood, Elliot Cole, and Roomful of Teeth the film is described as “an introspective and spiritual work reflective on the meaning of life.” A virtual reality journey through the inner rhythms of the human, the teaser shows off some...
