As someone who is approaching their thirties, I have to say, I am way too excited for a Power Rangers movie. Power Rangers was my jam back in the ‘90s, but looking back at it now, it’s all too clear that the show was a meant for a very specific demographic: young kids. Now, like many big franchises, the aim of this new film is to help widen its target to a more general audience, and thus far, I think they’ve succeeded.
We’re actually not even talking about the tone of the Power Rangers. Yes, it’s understandably aged up the tone so that it has greater appeal to adults, but even the mythology seems to have been amped up to make the film wholly more interesting.
If you haven’t been following, there have been rumors surrounding the new Power Rangers film for some time. More specifically,...

Four movies that transcend the “sequel” label, offering reunions with characters we honestly miss. And, hey, did you notice Ridley Scott and/or Harrison Ford have a connection to three of the four?
T2: Trainspotting
In some ways, Trainspotting is not the type of movie that begs a sequel. The frenetic, scatological story of heroine addicts Renton (Ewan McGregor), Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), Spud (Ewen Bremner) and Begbie (Robert Carlyle) was hailed as an indie gem when it was released in 1996, and needed no follow-up. One of the enduring reasons behind the X-Men’s popularity has been the writers and artists exploring being a mutant as being a metaphor for some aspect of the real world. It fueled the comics for decades and informed the 1990s animated series to a degree. It even was the foundation for the first Bryan Singer-directed feature film. Somewhere along the way, the theme has been shoved to the side in favor of action and pyrotechnics.
After the soft reboot via X-Men First Class, Singer and writer Simon Kinberg have been edging the mutants towards general acceptance. After saving the future and the world from disaster in the previous film, X-Men: Days of Future Past, now we have them as generally accepted members of society. So, where do you go from here? You use them as Earth’s first defenders in the loud, messy, and ultimately dissatisfying X-Men: Apocalypse.

'X-Men: Apocalypse' with Oscar Isaac in the supervillainous title role. 'X-Men: Apocalypse' review: Step back for series, but latest 'X-Men' movie 'works well enough' There's a three-way brawl going on in the Marvel universe, but it doesn't involve Spider-Man, Captain America, or Deadpool. Instead, the combatants are the three major movie studios who've divvied up the film rights to Marvel characters in licensing deals, some of which go back decades. In this corner we have Sony, makers of a Spider-Man series that has sunk so low since 2004's Spider-Man 2 that they punted the character back to our second combatant, Marvel Studios. In 2004, after years of seeing the majors compromise their intellectual property by making horrible film adaptations, they decided to finance and produce their own damn movies, in what would develop into an unprecedented winning streak. To this day, just when you think they're finally out of gas, Marvel...

X-Men: Apocalypse storms (see what I did there?) into theaters this Friday, May 27 and attempts to right the timeline that was left a muddied mess after the X-Men: Days of Future Past film.
Bryan Singer returns to the directing chair once again and as the architect for the X-Men universe, his attempt to streamline the franchise has only made it more confusing. It might be an overload of sub-par superhero films recently, minus the latest Captain America film, or it just might be the lack of good X-men films but X-Men: Apocalypse is a boring, bloated mess that is just a grade above Days of Future Past in terms of quality.

The most representative scene in X-Men: Apocalypse is a pivotal battle towards the end of the film, when an overgrown, all-powerful mutant attempts to flatten another with the strength of his gigantic thumb. That, in a nutshell, is the story of the latest entry in the iconic franchise, helmed by Bryan Singer. Indeed, it is symbolic of the current state of the series itself. These movies have so set out to be bigger, louder, and grander with each new chapter, that they risk being crushed by their own weight. While I do not share the dislike that other critics have voiced for Apocalypse, it is fair to wonder whether this sequel represents a step backwards or forward for the films.

The Uncanny X-Men – as they were once and sometimes called – have returned to show off their special abilities, remind us that being different is a gift not a curse, and of course, to save the world. However, the newest entry avoids the uncanny description even more by delivering a story that feels too normal or comfortable. Even for X-fans, this is a tedious page turner that’s rarely intriguing enough to make you want to see what happens in the next panel.
This time around the threat is one that feels all too familiar. In the opening prologue, a ritual in an Egyptian temple is performed to transform fresh-faced Oscar Isaac into the big blue baddie that the film is named after. But the transferring of powers or souls (or what have you) doesn’t go according to plan, burying the all-powerful mutant deep within the crumbling tomb and placing him in a coma-like state.

Chicago – In doing “comic book” movies right, Marvel Entertainment has established a formula of decent back stories, complex villainy and probable scenarios. In continuing to tell a history of the second half of the 20th Century in “X-Men Apocalypse,” they also add a historical parallel universe that works.

The film plays on themes of “what is the ultimate evil?” and “what is the ultimate power?” with enough ambiguity to create a questioning of all values, which closes in on our actual reality in the socio-economic experiment of America. By taking on the Cuban Missile Crisis in “First Class,” Richard M. Nixon and Vietnam in “Days of Future Past” and finally nuclear proliferation in “X-Men Apocalypse,” the producers – and director Bryan Singer – are blurring the lines between what a society under siege would go through, and how they would rely on a superhero class of people to save them. X-Men: Apocalypse hasn't been getting the positive critical response many expected it would, but pretty much every review mentions that the Quicksilver scenes are the standout moments in the film. These international TV spots give us a brief glimpse of the speedster in rescue mode, as well as a cool shot of Angel in flight with a "bamfing" Nightcrawler in pursuit, and what appears to be Psylocke free-falling after a plane. Have the mixed reviews put you off seeing Bryan Singer's latest, or will you be there opening day? Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel's X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto...

As fans have seen multiple times in comic book history, a big part of Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse has the titular villain recruiting his Four Horsemen: a group of extremely powerful mutants whom Apocalypse is able to convince to do his bidding and serve as his personal bodyguards. In the film, this group consists of Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Angel (Ben Hardy) and Psylocke (Olivia Munn), but that wasn’t always the case. In fact, most early drafts actually only included three of those Horsemen, with Psylocke only entering the fray late in the screenwriting process. Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of sitting down for an interview with X-Men: Apocalypse writer/producer Simon Kinberg, and knowing how big comic book blockbusters tend to change through development, the first question I posed was in regard to other characters who were considered to be a ...

Bryan Singer’s getting downright playful these days. Continuity is a very weird thing in the X-Men universe. Since the year 2000, when Singer’s first X-Men was released, we’ve seen them flash forward and backward in time, recasting key roles, while also keeping some of the same cast intact, leading to a series that led my eight-year-old to tell me as we were walking across the 20th Century Fox lot on Friday night, “Daddy, the X-Men movies make my brain go crazy.” You could describe X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days Of Future Past, and X-Men: Apocalypse as a trilogy, but I don’t think these film really work like that. At this point, each movie exists as its own thing, free to either embrace or discard everything that’s come before it depending on the story they’re telling. Each of the films feels like it’s resetting the entire series,...

Awakening after thousands of years, he recruits the disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and other mutants to create a new world order. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Professor X (James McAvoy) and Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) lead a team of young X-Men to stop their seemingly invincible nemesis from destroying mankind..
Let's start with some honesty from the heart. The last X-Men film (Days of Future Past/Dofp) was a step back from X-Men: First Class. You may not agree, but let's quickly go through a few things. Dofp started with a great action sequence (mostly in the future), then slowed to a snail's pace for a good hour and a half. The biggest threat so far emerges in X-Men: Apocalypse, but do raised stakes make a more effective movie? Ryan takes a look...
In the pursuit of ever higher stakes, X-Men: Apocalypse stretches to exceed the epoch-spanning scale of X-Men: Days Of Future Past. Where that 2014 hit - the biggest financial success of the franchise so far - was about travelling into history to save the future, X-Men: Apocalypse sees an ancient enemy waking up to cause global havoc in the year 1983.
Oscar Isaac plays the Apocalypse of the title - the earliest mutant who ruled as a god in the ancient world. Stirring from his slumber, Apocalypse draws together a band of minions, among them Angel (Ben Hardy), Psylocke (Olivia Munn) and Storm (Alexandra Shipp), before turning his attention to the most wanted mutant of them all - the now reclusive Magneto (Michael Fassbender).

You can't be a God without loyal followers.
For Apocalypse, those followers are called The Four Horsemen, and they include Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Angel (Ben Hardy), and Psylocke (Olivia Munn).
The all powerful Apocalypse can't do it all on his own, so he is using these four "horsemen" to help destroy the rest of the X-Men, and probably humanity as we know it. If we can count on anyone to stop them, however, it'd definitely be Professor X, Mystique and the rest of their crew. Sorry, Magneto.

Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique, dressed in civvies with a familiar human disguise to match, spectates over a mutant cage fight in today’s all-new X-Men: Apocalypse clip.
With the lights dimmed and doors locked, it is Kodi Smit-McPhee’s elusive Nightcrawler that’s thrust into the spotlight, going toe-to-toe with Ben Hardy’s majestic Angel.
From what we gather, today’s clip is lifted from an early portion of Bryan Singer’s blockbuster threequel, with Lawrence’s First Class member scouting potential students for Professor X’s school. Besides, previous trailers have shown that Hardy’s winged mutant goes on to become one of the Four Horsemen alongside Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Psylocke (Olivia Munn) and Alexandra Shipp’s tempermental Storm.

If you’re getting as excited for X-Men: Apocalypse as we are, then you’ll be glad to hear that a new clip has just been released.

Mystique looks like she’s laying low in a German bar/mutant exploitation ring in the clip, and she steps in to stand up for Nightcrawler.

Continuing to highlight the Four Horsemen one by one, 20th Century Fox has premiered a new X-Men: Apocalypse featurette ahead of the threequel’s imminent arrival, this time ushering Ben Hardy’s Angel into the lime-green spotlight.
It follows on the mutant heels of yesterday’s TV spot, itself showing another “power piece” included in Apocalypse‘s lineup: Alexandra Shipp’s Storm. Together, they form two instrumental parts of the Four Horsemen, a band of super-charged mutants governed by Oscar Isaac’s title supervillain in his quest for global annihilation. Michael Fassbender and Olivia Munn round out that formidable foursome, and we can surely expect both Magneto and Psylocke to receive individual character featurettes in the coming days.
Gunning to stem that chaos are James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Evan Peters, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Nicholas Hoult as Beast.

"Not all of us can control our powers." 20th Century Fox has unveiled the final trailer for Bryan Singer's X-Men: Apocalypse, the latest movie in the X-Men franchise. This looks much more action-packed and epic than the last few movies, befitting the title "Apocalypse" considering this big bad mutant wants to destroy the world once and for all. Oscar Isaac’s ancient mutant is ready to bring the world to its knees – and don’t we know all about it.
With little over a month to go until the arrival of Bryan Singer’s biblical blockbuster X-Men: Apocalypse, yet another poster has emerged from 20th Century Fox, this time assembling much of the threequel’s leading cast members.
Indeed, whereas previous posters have spotlighted the Four Horsemen – Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Olivia Munn (Psylocke), Alexandra Shipp (Storm) and Ben Hardy (Angel) – not to mention Professor X and his legion of mutant allies, the latest one-sheet to arrive on the scene tees up an all-out war.
Looming large over everyone else is, of course, Oscar Isaac’s En Sabah Nur, a former Egyptian pharaoh that abruptly rises from his generation-spanning slumber with one intention in mind – to destroy everything man and mutantkind have built, and in the ashes of their world,...

With so much of the focus lately going to the Dceu's latest, Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, and the McU's next, Captain America: Civil War, sometimes it seems like people forget the Xcu is getting set to follow up Deadpool in May with X-men: Apocalypse.
The film, which once again finds Bryan Singer- the man who launched the franchise- in the director's chair, looks to make its own mark on the superhero landscape when it arrives in theaters three weeks after Civil War. One area where it'll compete directly with Cap and Friends is on IMAX screens, as the film will try to shove Civil War out of the way to make room for its massive mutant battles.

It's time to meet the all-powerful Apocalypse.
The original mutant stars in the latest X-Men film, and his goal is to wipe out the human race. He can't do it on his own, however, and so he recruits four mutants to help him. Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Angel (Ben Hardy), Psylocke (Olivia Munn) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) are working with Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac), who enchants these four mutants with his incredible power. It is up to Professor X (James McAvoy), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), and the rest of the X-Men to stop them.

A new featurette from Bryan Singer's "X-Men: Apocalypse" has arrived, the clip offering new footage which focuses mainly on the villain's 'Four Horsemen'. Michael Fassbender's Magneto scores his new crimson helmet in the clip, while it seems Apocalypse's voice has undergone some serious tweaking and sounds even more mechanical than before.
There's also a new poster featuring another of the horsemen - British actor Ben Hardy as Angel. The film is currently slated to open May 27th.

One grandiose superhero movie is out of the way with “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice” opening this weekend, but another is coming in just a couple of short months with “X-Men: Apocalypse.” The big ensemble movie has graced the cover of Empire in the U.K., so that means lots of details from the magazine are trickling out. Of course it’s a massive good-guys-versus-bad-guys war, with Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and several X-Men like Storm, Angel and Psylocke being used as puppets by the evil mutant god Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac). And on the other side is Professor Xavier (James McAvoy) and his mutant team lead by Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence). The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse unite to destroy the weak in the new poster for X-Men Apocalypse! Take a look!

I really liked X-Men: Days of Future Past, but I have to be honest: I think X-Men: Apocalypse looks pretty bad. I'm still holding out a little bit of hope that it's better than the trailers make it out to be, and there are certain elements that I hope will work well (Olivia Munn's Psylocke, the new Jean and Scott, etc). But I have no clue what Oscar Isaac is doing here, and to me, this looks like one of those movies that could easily teeter into being unintentionally hilarious. We'll find out in a few months, but in the meantime, check out a new poster (via Yahoo) that features Apocalypse (Isaac) and his Four Horsemen: Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Psylocke (Munn), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), and Angel (Ben Hardy).
X-Men: Apocalypse opens on May 27. Are you excited to see it? Check out the Super Bowl commercial here to jog your memory.
