- A heated competition among Midsomer church choirs is interrupted by the bludgeon murder of the Midsomer Worthy's tenor, a local artist.
- DCI Barnaby and DC Jones investigate the murder of Connor Simpson, a member of the Midsomer Worthy choir that had been rehearsing for an upcoming competition. The man was found in his home, bludgeoned to death with a poker. Simpson had received an apparently threatening note with a pig's heart enclosed. Soon after all members of the choir, Joyce Barnaby included, receive a note saying they're next. When local birdwatcher and photographer Sam Judd is also found dead - the victim of a 12 gauge shotgun - Barnaby is convinced that the two death are somehow linked. When they learn of Simpson's criminal convictions - and the reasons he went to jail - they are set on the path to solving the mystery.—garykmcd
- Midsomer Worthy's church choir, including forensic Dr. George Bullard and Joyce, is ruthlessly trained for the county's annual Four Choirs Competition by ambitious director Laurence Barker, who is dead-set on beating his rival the cathedral organist, whom he accuses of winning that post by falsified CV, later found cheating by bugging. Their tenor Connor Simpson, whose cardiac attacks halted the latest repetition, is found bludgeoned to death with a poker at home, a second brandy glass hastily hidden; he received a pig's heart with a death threat, the latter soon is sent to all choir members. Barnaby and Jones look into the correlating events. Soon birdwatcher Sam Judd, former last keeper of self-made scrooge Giles Armitage's estate, is shot on his farm. After it's found the second victim was photographing suspicious activity, an attempted murder is interrupted last-minute. With a mysterious figure seen lurking around the churchyard, adultery, an ex-con forger under alias and a missing original portrait of Bach, there's much to uncover before the dots connect.—KGF Vissers
