In Sickness and in Health...

In Sickness and in Health... later ended up being the title of the spin off Alf Garnett series back in 1985.

Here Alf feels ignored when he is ill with stomach pains. Else and the rest are hoping to watch television in peace.

His mood does not improve when Dr Kelly (Graham Stark) turns up to examine him. Alf is not enamoured with Dr Kelly's medical abilities. Also the doctor looks more ill than Alf as he cannot shake off a nagging cough.

After Alf ends up in hospital, he seems to think that the black nurse fancies him. Once again he is left less than impressed with the medical surgeons. More interested in their social life than the patients.

It all leads to the family being distraught that Alf might die at the operating table. At least Else has his life insurance to look forward to.

The episode allows Alf Garnett to rail against the NHS under Harold Wilson. It also allows Johnny Speight to make observations about how hospital surgeons viewed working class patients.

Alf seemed to have had the last laugh. He likes to keep hold of his pennies.
