With movie theaters fully back up and running, HBO Max no longer has any major film releases to point to with its list of new releases for May 2022. That’s alright though as the streamer is leaning into the HBO side of its branding to offer up some fun TV releases.
The biggest HBO Max original this month is undoubtedly the return of Hacks on May 12. The first season of this comedy starred Jean Smart as a venerated Vegas comedy and Hannah Einbinder as her new millennial assistant. The first batch of episodes was excellent and even won an Emmy or two for its troubles and now season 2 will look to keep up the good vibes.
Premiering on May 15, is The Time Traveler’s Wife. This series adaptation of the 2003 novel (which in turn became a a 2009 movie) keeps up with two star-crossed lovers who can never quite make the timing work…...

Since making her Broadway debut in Eubie! in 1979, Jenifer Lewis has become a fixture onscreen with roles on A Different World, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Girlfriends and Meet the Browns, as well as starring in films like Jackie’s Back and The Cookout. She’s perhaps best known for playing a string of iconic mothers; her onscreen offspring includes Taraji P. Henson (Not Easily Broken), Angela Bassett (What’s Love Got to Do With It), Whitney Houston (The Preacher’s Wife) and Tupac Shakur (Poetic Justice).
“I was everybody’s mama because I was a born leader,” Lewis boasts to Et. She has no qualms about the mothers she’s played, or even about taking on the roles that some of her colleagues in Hollywood may have viewed as stereotypes.

How few films are targeted toward a black audience? You only think about this question when watching such a film, like the eminently passable wedding movie "Jumping the Broom."
When found, these movies can place a different spin on familiar family situations. The title refers to the ritual that slaves used to signify marriage and that has lasted to the modern age. The movies also create an entire star circuit of black actors and comedians that operates in the shadow of Hollywood stardom.
One African-American star worth noting is the Reverend Td Jakes. The spirituality book author is moving into film, looking to expand his multimedia empire. "Jumping the Broom" is his latest endeavor. He’s even the Alfred Hitchcock of these movies, always showing up for a cameo to dispense a smidgen of advice.

I thought we’d covered this film previously on this site, but a search revealed that we most certainly have not, so here it is, along with news that it will be released in theaters this May.
The gist of it…
It’s called 35 And Ticking, an ensemble romantic comedy written and directed by Russ Parr, and starring Nicole Ari Parker, Tamala Jones, Kevin Hart, Keith Robinson, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Meagan Good, Mike Epps and Clifton Powell.
Plot? Victoria (Tamala Jones), Zenobia (Nicole Ari Parker), Cleavon (Kevin Hart), and Phil (Keith Robinson), 4 friends approaching the age of 35, are all struggling to build the families they’ve always dreamed of. While Zenobia is still looking for a man, Victoria is married to a man who doesn’t want children. Clevon, meanwhile, is too geeky to get a woman, and Phil is already married with children, but his wife is not very interested in being a mother.

This Week in DVD & Blu-ray is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD and Blu-ray releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy and Fry’s. The Fighter [*Warning: Obvious spoiler ahead*] Great care was paid to ensure that The Fighter be as authentic a true story as possible, which is also why its ending feels a tad misguided. Was it necessary to close the film on a note of uplifting triumph? That's the expected conclusion, certainly, and it's not as though there's ever a moment where The Fighter seems like it might be veering down a path that hasn't already been laid out for it in countless other sports films. But the humanity of the picture stems from its acrid family dynamics, and it's in those moments that the film transcends the genre in which it's forced to reside. In fact, so much time is dedicated...

LeAnn Rimes has been officially engaged to actor boyfriend Eddie Cibrian. Although words of her engagement have been swirling since November, the country singer claimed that her "Northern Lights" co-star hasn't proposed to her until Christmas Eve, December 24. On Monday, December 27, she made use of Twitter to set the record straight.
"Lol, I just love how 'people' know more than we know about our own lives!!!! We got engaged on Christmas Eve, period the end," the 28-year-old wrote a long tweet. She went on to stress, "We've never been engaged to each other at all before that. We've always known that's where it was headed, but never was it official until now and we couldn't be happier."
Earlier in the day, LeAnn has her representative confirming she has got engaged to Eddie. To People magazine, the rep said, "Yes, they were engaged over the holidays and are very happy." The...

Last night I met one of our regular readers of S & A (and a very, very attractive one if I do say so myself speaking as a guy…), and we got into a conversation about how often black actors and actresses I’ve met in person, are much better looking than they appear on screen.
It’s as if filmmakers have no clue how to light them properly, to make them appear as they do in real life, or they’re purposely made to look worse in order to make their white counterparts look better.
In case in point, example No 1, Chris Rock. After meeting him in person, I realized what several other people have told me, who have also met him, that he’s really good looking in person. You wouldn’t know it from how he usually appears on screen, as if he’s this gnarly looking, grinning gnome.

So earlier today I saw that new Steve Carrell/Tina Fey comedy Date Night (which I went very reluctantly to see and found to my complete surprise that it’s actually pretty damn funny). Taraji P. Henson also happens to be in in the film playing a rather thankless supporting role as a N.Y. detective trying to find out who are the bad guys (one of them played by Common) that are after Carrell and Fey. However, I wish Henson had instead been trying to find out who did her hair in the film.
Suffice it to say she looks totally ridiculous wearing some kind of horrible, odd-fitting wig on her head, which looks like someone dumped a bucket of water on her head before she stepped on the set. In fact, to give you a better picture, she literally looks like she’s wearing a Jheri Curl hairdo...

The Times is freaking out about the success of the movie The Blind Side, somehow making the connection between Sandra Bullock's character and Sarah Palin and fretting that it may actually win an Academy Award this year. I'm still not convinced that it will, but it is true that it is something of a miracle that it was ever nominated. Whatever happens there, it was the big winner at the Movieguide Awards gala at the Beverly Wilshire where it won a number of awards. Other winners included Invictus, The Stoning of Saroya M, Not Easily Broken and in the TV category Bedford and Gifted Hands. Movieguide has long been making the case to a sometimes skeptical town that family fare makes more money at the box office and they may have their best example yet of the phenomenon with the...

It’s all there!
The total? 589 films - including films that haven’t yet been released, but will be, before the end of the year, in the next 3 weeks.
That’s a lot of movies, right? How many of those did you see? And maybe more importantly, how many fall under the category of “black films?”
Well, to answer the latter question… I looked over the list – although, to be honest, I did it rather quickly, so there’s a chance I missed 1 or 2; but I don’t think I missed more than that. But...

An Oscar-nominated film, new comedies from Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler, and a mediocre Keanu Reeves sci-fi remake... that pretty much sums up this week's DVD releases. If you ask me, you'll probably want to save your money, although I wouldn't mind seeing I.O.U.S.A. (a pretty timely documentary from the director of Wordplay) and I've heard good things about Donkey Punch. There's also a 3-disc collector's edition release of No Country for Old Men out this week, plus Tango & Cash on Blu-ray. Hart will be seen in the new Comedy Central show "Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire," which premieres Thursday. DVD Links: DVD News | Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed Doubt I have this Blu-ray sitting right here and plan on popping it in as soon as I get done with this column and will hopefully have a review up in the next day or so. Doubt is a solid film with fantastic performances and with cinematography from Roger Deakins I am sure it will look gorgeous in high-def (even though Deakins didn't exactly bring his A-game to this one). The features, however, do look a bit on the weak side with four traditional featurettes and a commentary from writer/director John Patrick Shanley, but Shanley's comments may prove to be solid enough for a recommendation. However, all likelihood is this one is best left as a rental as I don't consider it a buy based on my one theatrical experience. No Country for Old Men (Collector's Edition) Along...

Sony's PG-rated comedy "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" arrested an estimated $39 million during a record-setting Martin Luther King Jr. weekend to bow stylishly atop a gold-plated domestic boxoffice.
Other films ringing up extravagant sums in the four-day frame included Clint Eastwood's "Gran Torino," which Warner Bros. parked in second place with $26.2 million over its sophomore session in wide release. "Torino" -- which dropped just 26% from the previous Friday-Sunday in registering its four-day tally -- boasts a $77.2 million cume after six weeks of limited and wide distribution.
Lionsgate's 3-D horror film "My Bloody Valentine" rung up a bloody decent $24.2 million to open in third place, while Fox Searchlight's hip-hop biopic "Notorious" -- based on the life and death of the rapper known as Notorious B.I.G. -- notarized $24 million to bow fourth through Monday. The family comedy "Hotel for Dogs" from DreamWorks and Paramount booked fifth place with a $22.5 million debut.

The Martin Luther King Jr. weekend is proving bountiful for at least one shopping-mall misfit.
Sony's PG-rated comedy "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" -- starring Kevin James ("I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry") as a hapless security guard-turned-hero -- rung up an impressive $33.8 million in estimated opening grosses through Sunday. That put the Happy Madison production firmly atop the domestic boxoffice headed into the Monday holiday.
"It's a huge number, there's no doubt about it," Sony distribution president Rory Bruer said.
Clint Eastwood's "Gran Torino" from Warner Bros. was pacing second over its second weekend of wide release, following several sessions in limited distribution. Pumping another $22.2 million it its tank this weekend, "Torino" now hauls a $73.2 million cume.
The frame's three other wide openers also loaded up on three-day coin.
Lionsgate's 3-D horror film "My Bloody Valentine" registered $21.9 million in third from a mix of extra-dimensional and conventional playdates.

If you're a movie buff, you probably spend most of January catching up with all the awards movies released in December, especially since most of them initially open in big cities, and then expand across the country. But movie critics see all the December movies in December, leaving only January movies in January. And it doesn't take long to notice that January has become a dumping ground for terrible movies that no one wants and no one wants to see (witness: Bride Wars, Paul Blart Mall Cop, Not Easily Broken, Hotel for Dogs, The Unborn, etc.). But fortunately, that's not a hard and fast rule; every so often a true gem comes along in January, perhaps misjudged by the powers that be, or just overlooked.
1. Cloverfield
Released January 18, 2008
In last year's surprise hit, a group of twentysomethings race across Manhattan, dodging a giant city-stomping monster, to rescue Odette Yustman. Because.

Gran Torino's expansion into wide release, plus strong openings for The Unborn and Bride Wars, combined for a surprisingly robust early January weekend at the box office.
With Gran Torino, Warner Bros. appears to have pulled off a genuinely successful platform release -- which isn't easy (though perhaps somewhat easier when your movie is a populist crowdpleaser). The film crept along in limited release for four weeks before expanding to 2800 screens this weekend for a cool $29 million. Next week, Defiance will attempt a similar coup, and we'll see what happens; my guess is that it won't play nearly as well.
Bride Wars and The Unborn essentially tied for second place with around $21 million each. Both did well, which is not a huge shock; the obligatory January horror film tends to be easy money, and Bride Wars pretty much matched the precedent set by 27 Dresses last January. And Screen Gems...

There are two things American movie audiences love. Dogs and an angry, slightly vengeful, Clint Eastwood.
Opening on wide release this weekend, Mr. Eastwood's Gran Torino, topped the U.S. box office beating out a plot-hampered "chick flick" and a forgettable (and painful) horror movie to the tune of $29 million.
Eastwood, who hasn't starred in a film since his 2005, Best Picture winning Milion Dollar Baby, wrote and directed his take on a war veteran who finds his neighborhood rapidly changing demographics from solidly middle-class and Caucasian to a lower-income, mostly Asian immigrant block. Gruff, edgy with a whisper of a moral compass, Eastwood's Walt Kowalski wins the favor of the neighborhood by coming to the resuce of his young neighbor from a local gang, kicking off a street war between the aging veteran and the gang.

The players: Director: Bill Duke, Writer: Brian Bird, Cast: Morris Chestnut, Taraji P. Henson, Maeve Quinlan, Kevin Hart
Facts of interest: Based on the novel by T.D. Jakes.
The plot: A Los Angeles couple struggles to save their troubled marriage.
Our thoughts: Bill Duke’s “Not Easily Broken” isn’t really enlightening in its examination of an imperfect marriage, but the film boasts a fast-paced plot and a couple of surprisingly solid performances that make for a mostly entertaining, if sometimes overemotional drama.

Opening wide across the North America for the first time on Friday, January 9, "Gran Torino" has got a turbo boost at the weekend box office. The suburban drama movie directed and starred by Clint Eastwood has climbed up to the top from the 14th place it was listed a week before by earning $29.5 million.
The more than $29 million bow sets a new record for Eastwood as it is by far the biggest opening of any Eastwood movie in wide release. The 78-year-old actor and director's previous best weekend was the $18-million bow of "Space Cowboys" in 2000. Meanwhile, his recently released "Changeling" has only pulled in $9.4 million during its first wide release weekend.

Warner Bros. sped to the top of the domestic boxoffice this weekend, as Clint Eastwood's urban drama "Gran Torino" registered an estimated $29 million with a turbocharged expansion into wide release.
Fox's opening salvo with the romantic comedy "Bride Wars" captured second place with $21.5 million, while Universal's supernatural thriller "The Unborn" delivered $21.1 million in third. The three top debutantes outpaced expectations in a weekend so robust as to blow away any concern that economic hard times might discourage moviegoing.
Sony's urban drama "Not Easily Broken" bowed less dramatically, but with just 724 runs even its ninth-place showing of $5.6 million amounted to a solid showing.
Industrywide, the first weekend of the 2009 boxoffice year marked a 4% improvement over the same frame last year with $146 million in collective grosses, according to Nielsen Edi data.
The specialty market also was ebullient.

Clint Eastwood clearly isn't done yet. Gran Torino cracked $10k per theater and won the weekend going away. I had it doing better than most projections, but I definitely didn't see the win coming. Let's break it down. #1 movie predicted correctly: 0 Weeks In A Row 1. Gran Torino I'm actually happy it won, though of course I look like a dunce now. This little dandy has made $40m on a budget of a little less than that. So it could end up a modest financial winner, depending on how the international market responds to an an angry American. Result: 29.0 million (My rank: #2, $14.7m off) 2. Bride Wars I was dialed in on the money. It's pretty much Fool's Gold all over again, though somehow it's a worse film I think. Result: 21.5 million (My rank: #1, $.8m off) 3. The Unborn A very nice result for The Unborn, clearly the horror fans were starved. It...

In the biggest weekend of his career, actor/director/producer/song writer Clint Eastwood won the box office race with an estimated $29 million for Gran Torino.
The surprise winner officially debuted a month ago, but was enjoying a limited release until it went wide this weekend in 2,800+ theaters. It has earned $40.1 million so far, and may be on pace to be Eastwood’s biggest movie, ahead of Million Dollar Baby’s $101.4 million total. The stories are basically the same: a grumpy man takes a fresh-faced kid under his wing and teaches him/her about life before making things right in the world. Only this one has more racism.
However, Torino wasn’t the awards favorite Warner Bros was hoping for. Eastwood grabbed an early “Best Actor” win from the National Board of Review, but the film has been almost completely shut out of nominations since. Eastwood did pick up a...

Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson together don't add up to one Clint Eastwood. The 78-year-old Mount Rushmore of movie stars schooled the twentysomethings at the box office, with Eastwood's Gran Torino taking the weekend with a studly $29 million, per studio estimates compiled today by Exhibitor Relations. Hathaway and Hudson's much-hyped Bride Wars took second ($21.5 million), but struggled to match its magazine-cover output with bottoms in seats. The comedy was outgrossed, theater for theater, by three Top 10 films: Gran Torino; the new horror film, The Unborn ($21.1 million); and, the new Fireproof-y drama, Not Easily Broken, which made a Fireproof-y $5.6 million off only...

- Well I’m off to a smashing start for 2009. I figured it would be no problem whatsoever for Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson to march themselves down the aisle and all the way to the top of the box office. Not only did they have to settle for second place but they almost got beat by a horror movie about an unborn twin that needs his live twin to die in order to be born. Right.
