Unlike in theater or television, writers generally get the short end of the stick in the movie business. When a film doesn't work, the script is blamed, when it does work, the director gets credit. Writers get fired, rehired, fired again, rewritten and screwed out of credit. But that's not to say that once they get the momentum behind them, a screenwriter can't become just as talked about as actors, actresses and directors around Hollywood watering holes and meeting rooms.
As such, following our picks for the potential stars and starlets on the rise, we've chosen five screenwriters who look like they're going to be in demand over the next few years. We last ran one of these nearly two years ago, and all five of our picks have gone on to big things -- Emma Forrest has David Yates and Emma Watson adapting her memoir "Your Voice In My Head...

Wow. These sequels are getting greenlit, lined up and into pre-production faster and faster. I remember a time (he wistfully notes) when you used to have to wait and see if a film was both good and commercially successful before you started cracking on with sequels. Those times are long gone. With Marvel setting the pace with their fearless timetable for Thor, Iron Man, Spidey and Avengers sequels, WB are getting in on the act, clearly having decided that they are happy enough with what they have seen of Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock sequel to give the go ahead to more.
Certainly the trailer we’ve seen for Sherlock 2 looks impressive enough, with plenty of style, quips, intrigue and bombast and equally certainly, WB must be convinced that they have more on their hands than just 2.5 minutes of good trailer material. Drew Pearce, creator of UK superhero satire series No Heroics...

You are not hallucinating. You did not somehow miss the opening of Guy Ritchie‘s second Sherlock Holmes film. You also did not imagine that the film seems to focus principally on trees that explode the minute bullets hit them and Robert Downey Jr. cross-dressing more than is probably necessary (at least, that’s what all the marketing seems to hinge upon). Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows will not open until December 16, but Warner Bros. is apparently so pumped on this second outing that they’ve already set a screenwriter for the third film. And they’ve chosen a screenwriter that all of Hollywood already seems pumped on. Drew Pearce will script the third Sherlock Holmes flick, but not before he finishes up his other big franchise flick three-quel script, for Shane Black‘s Iron Man 3. Not content to just pen scripts for series that star Robert Downey Jr. winking his way through established material...

Iron Man 3 writer Drew Pearce has been hired to write a big screen adaptation of DC Comics' The Mighty for Paramount. Variety reports that the project is being developed by Mary Parent and Cale Boyter at their Disruption Entertainment banner. The studio bought the rights in June. Chris Bender and Jc Spink will produce via their Benderspink banner and Jake Weiner will also be involved as a producer.
The Mighty is an original graphic novel from writers Peter J. Tomasi and Keith Champagne. The story is about "Alpha-One, the world's most powerful super-being, who has always been a force for good. But a cop who's life was saved by Alpha One as a child, has uncovered his hero's dark plan that will put them on a collision course of an ordinary man versus a super-man."

Writer and television producer Drew Pearce will write Marvel's "Iron Man 3," TheWrap has confirmed. Pearce also wrote the screenplay to Marvel's "Runaways," now on hold. He was executive producer on ITV's "Lip Service." Shane Black, who directed the movie's star, Robert Downey Jr., in "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," is directing the third installment of the popular franchise, which is set for a May 3, 2013 release. Dowey will star in and had director approval on "Iron Man 3." Black's work is known for combining elements of action, thriller, noir and comedy. Jon Favreau,...

More good Marvel news to top off that bit about James McAvoy in X-Men: First Class. Deadline reports that Marvel has hired British television writer Drew Pearce, of "Lip Service", The Musical Storytellers Ginger & Black, and a recent superhero show called "No Heroics", to write the script for the adaptation of Marvel's Runaways comic. As was announced in April, Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist director Peter Sollett will be directing the film (not Joss Whedon as once rumored). It sounds like a very strong creative team is coming together for this adaptation, which is great to hear - but we still don't know when exactly it'll start shooting. Brian K. Vaughan's Runaways follows a group of kids who happen to be the offspring of super-villains and are endowed with their own powers for evil. However, the kids want no part of their parents diabolical plans and instead wish to use...
