Banned Rock Opera of the Powerpuff Girls
brainsalad-11 October 2019
Tired of seeing their city destroyed, the Powerpuff Girls make a wish for peace. Is the little Gnome on the red flower the answer to their prayers? In order to find out, the Powerpuff Girls must first choose whether to sacrifice all their powers to him. Banned in the US because some of the visuals were seen as too religious. Some of the music isn't great, but the parts sung by the Gnome are actually well done with a heavy metal/progressive rock vibe. The imagery is classic Powerpuff minimalism combined with in this case with a hint of psychedelic from the 60s and 70s. One of the better episodes.

Beware of flashing lights but a killer soundtrack

Warning: Spoilers
Inspired by School Of Rock, this rock opera episode is different from other episodes. A gnome (originally written for Jack Black) comes to Townsville to rid the girls of their powers.

Using psych-rock and heavy metal, kids and adults can enjoy it... as long as you don't have epilepsy. There is heavy use of flashing lights that even made my eyes strain.

Nevertheless, it is a cute concept that is executed exquisitely. If you love rock-operas and such, you'll get a kick out of it.

Really liked it as a kid but nowadays this is really bad

Warning: Spoilers
This is possibly one of the most confusing episodes of television I have ever seen. It's done entirely in song, all of them bleeding into each other yet at the same time seeming to come out of nowhere. The fact that there's no dialogue in between and the songs are rather shorts completely destroys any coherent sense of pacing or tension in the plot. This also leaves the message rather vague and muddled as to what exactly it's supposed to be.

It starts out as a song of all of the villains coming together to destroy the city in an shockingly awful song. A good portion of the songs in this special sound like discordant cats being dragged painfully down an alleyway. Freedom Beef and You Wanna Make Me Feel Good are the only two good songs and everything else is either hilariously forgettable elevator music or downright unlistenable.

Then the Powerpuff Girls come in and for some reason they decide to be insistent on giving Tara Strong ridiculously high notes so that even though she's Tara Strong, she can sing, it sounds as bad as everyone else. The girls cannot harmonize well, I think it was attempt by the actors to make them sound younger but there are songs from other episodes where their vocals don't sound as bad even in trying to achieve that affect.

And then out of nowhere after getting defeated they become all sad and dramatic and it's pretty goofy. Then their tears cause a gnome to come from the ground and trades them their powers for world peace. Then the townspeople start becoming a cult around the gnome for some reason? I'm pretty sure the gnome is the villain but other than taking the powers from the main characters I'm unsure as exactly how he's evil other than they say that. Then out of nowhere, with no buildup at all, with almost zero implications that this is in anyway a bad situation, the professor comes out talking about freedom beef or something. He says that the town has given up what they used to have for freedom, but this doesn't actually show other than the town visually looking like a cult. There's not even really any demonstration, despite it being a pretty cliche and easy to follow line of logic, that losing their powers has any affect on the main characters or the world.

The professor makes the girls go fight the gnome, and somehow taoism has come into this as a main part of the moral? And for some reason the gnome loses his powers and gets intimidated into falling off a vine and dies and then another bad song and then it's over. There's definitely a political message to it but I can't discern what it is because I do not know enough about politics.

It feels like everybody writing the episode needs to lay off the psychedelics and actually come together to figure out what exactly it is because it felt like a jumbled mess. I was constantly questioning if they had just cut something out of the episode because I was so confused. Bad episode, kind of a disaster.

School of rock but if it kinda sucked.

Warning: Spoilers
As a actor, and stand up comedian. I think a musical concept inspiration of school of rock is not bad. But when I saw this I was like, "Why just no!" Now first off the the plot. The villains are taking over the city of Townsville, and the girls come in to save the day but just end up getting beaten up, then they wish for a day of peace, and that where the Gnome (Originally for Jack Black, but now he is played by Jess Harnell) comes out of a fould and promises peace in the city but if they give him the girl's power and so the Powerpuff Girls give up they're powers and the gnome has the power and uses it secretly for evil like it's his own king. But skip that part, when the girls are fighting the gnome in song which every song starts every 5 to 10 seconds! Now I know what your thinking, "Come on that's ridiculous! Musicals always have a talking dialog" But this one the girls don't even speak in this, same goes with the mayor, the citizens, and even the fricking villains don't even talk in this! It like these musical numbers don't need to have a point or a lead anymore, it's like these songs just play out of nowhere, CAN THEY AT LEAST TALK FOR JUST ONE OR TWO WHOLE MINUTES!?

But when they are fighting the Gnome there is a scene forcing the religion of Taoism/Daoism of the ying and yang to everyone saying, "Hey this is why everyone should be listening to." And this was the final straw when I saw this, but I made towards the end. So the girls defeat the Gnome and it ends with one more musical number "Why can't we all get along?" And the Narrator singing "One again the day is saved thanks to the Powerpuff Girls!"

So what parts where good about this musical?

1. The voice actors, everyone has a good singing voice. E. G Daily I already knew cause she is also a singer too, same with Tara, and Cathy not gonna lie are also great singers. The only songs for this that's good is "The city of Townsville is going down," and "Freedom Beef" those two were a banger.

2. I think it would have been actually good if they didn't add the Taoism/Daoism, and if every musical number didn't start randomly and they gave time for the characters to talk and to have a reason to sing instead of the songs instantly start singing.

3. The Narrator should have been in a few other scenes. I mean I think the Narrator, (Played by Tom Kenny who also does a few other characters in the show) should have been added in like "and so the girls sadly gave away their powers." or "Uh oh, girls don't trust this gnome!" Then that would have made more sense in this.

But it's a long way to the top if you wanna rock and roll, but this made it in the middle and back down.

I'm giving it a three because of the Taoism/Daoism added and forced in, and the songs kept on going without anyone having time to talk.
