The other week, Pixar announced some shocking and troubling news that took everyone by surprise, as the animation studio revealed that co-founder John Lasseter would be taking a six-month leave of absence from the company after “difficult conversations” regarding some “missteps” he’s made over the years. Though the official statement from the filmmaker chose to omit the exact details surrounding his exit, we’re beginning to learn more about what really happened.
Lasseter, who’s directed numerous films for the studio, including Toy Story, Toy Story 2 and Cars, was apparently known for “grabbing, kissing, [and] making comments about physical attributes” to his employees. He’s also said to be a heavy drinker and reportedly even made an unwanted advance on Rashida Jones back when she was working on Toy Story 4. Not only that, but Pixar employees have since told Deadline that some of the head honcho’s behavior was a bit creepy.

New details have emerged about the alleged workplace sexual harassment by Disney/Pixar chief creative officer John Lasseter, including evidence suggesting Disney knew of and worked around the misconduct. According to multiple sources who spoke anonymously to Deadline, the Pixar co-founder attended wrap parties with a handler “to ensure he would not engage in inappropriate conduct with women.”
Citing “missteps,” Lasseter announced last week that he would be taking a six-month “sabbatical” from his role: “I especially want to apologize to anyone who has ever been on the receiving end of an unwanted hug or any other gesture they felt crossed the line in any way, shape, or form. No matter how benign my intent, everyone has the right to set their own boundaries and have them respected.”

Wolverine is basically Old Man Peter Pan.
A new TV ad for Logan suggests that you don’t go see “The Beauty” this weekend, as in the just released Beauty and the Beast, but go see “The Beast” instead. I agree with the recommendation, yet if Wolverine is to be likened to any character from a Disney classic, it should only be Peter Pan. And with Logan the comparison is especially interesting.
Oddly enough, Hugh Jackman recently starred as the villain Blackbeard in a prequel to the Peter Pan story as we know it, and it was properly — pun intended — panned. Logan is the better reworking of the material, which originated with dramatic and literary works by J.M. Barrie. This time Jackman is the Peter figure in a kind of epilogue to the tale. Forget Hook, because Logan offers the only old man Peter Pan we need.

The ladies of The View were even more animated Monday morning in honor of Halloween. In customary fashion, the co-hosts got into character to celebrate the annual holiday complete with over-the-top costumes and show-stopping makeup. This year's theme? Cartoons! The women looked larger than life as they dressed up as some of television's signature figures, including Raven-Symoné as South Park's Eric Cartman, Jedediah Bila as Betty Boop and Candace Cameron Bure as Tinker Bell. Just like the sassy fairy, Bure descended from the ceiling on wires for a one-of-a-kind entrance. "I love Tinker Bell," Bure explained. "This is a dream come...

Et went behind the scenes as the ladies of The View got ready for Halloween ahead of Monday's show.
Traditionally, Halloween is a time for ghosts and goblins, but co-host Candace Cameron-Bure will be going the magical route by flying onto the stage as Tinkerbell.

"I went to Disneyland this summer and I took a picture side by side with Tink, and I was like, 'Hey! We kind of look alike,'" Cameron-Bure explained to Et. "So I thought it would be perfect to be Tinkerbell for Halloween."
Costume designer Fran Taylor said they worked on the outfit for nearly two months.

In Disney’s attempt to cash in on both newly acquired properties (Marvel, Lucasfilm) and its classic catalog (Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland series, Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book), it’s now looking to create a mash-up of two of its beloved animated films from the 1950s, both of which are based on classic literature: Lewis Carroll’s Alice’S Adventures In Wonderland and J.M. Barrie’s play and novel Peter Pan; Or, The Boy Who Wouldn’T Grow Up.
The twist? In the newly announced live-action film — titled Come Away — to be directed by Brenda Chapman (codirector of the Mouse House’s successful Brave), Alice and Peter are siblings. Taking place before either of their adventures, the script by Marissa Kate Goodhill has the children mourning the death of an older brother and dealing with their parents’ anguish, prompting them to find solace in fantasy worlds. (Sounds dark!

Joining Beauty and the Beast, the Tim Burton-directed Dumbo, and Cruella De Ville in Disney’s pantheon of old-school classics poised for the live-action treatment, Deadline brings word that the House of Mouse is circling back to Neverland for a new take on the Peter Pan tale of old.
The company is ushering said project into pre-production quite quickly, too, with David Lowery and Toby Halbrooks already attached to direct and write. Currently placing the final touches to the summer release of Pete’s Dragon, a modern reimagining of the studio’s 1977 musical, Lowery and Halbrooks are perhaps the perfect fit to steer J.M. 2015 offered some terrific films for audiences – The Martian, Creed, Straight Outta Compton, Brooklyn and Star Wars: The Force Awakens to name a few. They were huge crowd-pleasers and very successful at the box office. But not every movie connected with audiences this past year, as much as we wanted them to.

The very idea behind Pan is ill-conceived. Who wants a prequel to Peter Pan? J.M. Barrie’s classic hero captures our imagination because he’s the Boy Who Won’t Grow Up; the idea of watching him as a regular kid, before he got that way, misses the point. And yet, here we are. Joe Wright’s film is not only a prequel, it seems to want to set up a whole Pan-verse to mine for franchise potential. (Never mind the fact that Disney, whose 1953 animated version of the film is still one of the studio’s high points, has already done that, with sequels and a whole slew of recent Tinkerbell spinoffs.) It not only gives us an elaborate origin tale — turns out young Peter’s got noble warrior lineage — but it also offers the sight of our hero and his future nemesis James (a.k.a. Captain) Hook as best buddies.

"Don't you understand, Tink? You mean more to me than anything in this whole world!" More Tinkerbell? Yep. THR is reporting that Reese Witherspoon has been cast in Disney's live-action film Tink, which will be another movie about Tinker Bell, to star Witherspoon. She will also help produce the project with her partner Bruna Papandrea at their company Pacific Standard. Alas, any plot details are unknown other than that the film is inspired by the world of the classic novel. That novel being "Peter and Wendy" written by J.M. Barrie, where the Tinker Bell character first originated from. No director is attached to this yet either. The only other details provided about Disney's Tink are: the script is being written by Victoria Strouse (New Best Friend, Pixar's Finding Dory); and it "will play with the idea and the timeline of the well-known Peter Pan narrative." They also say it's being...

Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon is attached to star in and produce “Tink,” a live-action Tinker Bell movie in development at Disney, which is already developing a separate project under the same title with Elizabeth Banks, an individual familiar with the project told TheWrap. Victoria Strouse (“Finding Dory”) wrote the script, and while details of the project remain under wraps, the film is expected to explore the “untold story” behind the character. As first depicted as a minor, non-speaking character in J.M. Barrie’s “Peter Pan” play, Tinker Bell is Peter’s fairy sidekick who eventually became one of Disney’s most famous characters.

Fans of the web series The New Adventures of Peter + Wendy (Napw) can start celebrating. The second season of the modern adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s Peter and Wendy will debut on June 12, 2015.
Napw stars Kyle Walters as Peter Pan and Paula Rhodes as Wendy Darling, two long-time friends from Neverland, Ohio with very different ideas about growing up. The second season of the web series will re-introduce viewers to Peter and Wendy, after the latter left Neverland to pursue the job of her dreams despite Peter’s growing affections for her. Napw season two will, according to the series’ creative team, show “old loves wilt while new loves blossom,” and introduce old enemies who will test the friendships of characters established in the first season.

Sequels and spinoffs are all the rage on the big screen these days, but the news that Disney is moving forward with a Frozen 2 still comes as something of a surprise considering the studio has been reticent to pump out theatrically-released follow-ups to its biggest hits - only The Three Caballeros, The Rescuers Down Under, Fantasia 2000 and Winnie the Pooh are part of the Disney Animated Canon.
However, throughout the '90s and '00s Disney had a lucrative side-business in direct-to-video sequels that were turned around quickly and cheaply and made the studio a fast buck. Many execs felt that these cheapened the originals and John Lasseter put the brakes on them, although the recent Tinker Bell films (branching out from Peter Pan) have their roots in this release model.

Do you believe in fairies?
Well, you should. The world of fairies, led by Neverland's spritely pixie Tinker Bell, has been dramatized over a half-dozen animated films from the talented folks at DisneyToon Studios. Tonight, Allison Williams will don the green tunic to star in NBC’s Peter Pan Live! Since appearing in 1904, J. M. Barrie’s poignant tale, with its themes of eternal youth and defiled innocence, has inspired everything from Broadway musicals to arty erotica. Here, a timeline of the nostalgic and provocative cultural exploits of Peter, Wendy, Captain Hook, and the Lost Boys.1904 Peter Pan, or the Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up, by Scottish journalist turned playwright James Matthew Barrie, premieres in London. Intended as a Christmas pantomime, the play features a girl as Peter (for practical reasons: Girls are lighter to lift in harnesses). 1905 Barrie’s Peter Pan makes its American stage debut; Maude Adams plays Peter. 1924 After years of film studios’ pursuing his property, Barrie authorizes a silent-film adaptation by Paramount starring Betty Bronson. Tinker Bell is played alternately by a light on a fishing line and actress...

Video: 8 Disney Characters You Forgot Were Voiced by Famous Stars
And, like most beloved children's stories, the familiar tale of Peter Pan is based on a book full of horrible murder and deeply traumatizing acts of depravity. Seriously, children's stories are messed up. To show you what we mean, here are seven beloved (Disney-adapted) tales of fun and adventure that are based...

It's always a good time to revisit our favorite children's movies, whether you're introducing your kids to them for the first time or enjoying a Disney classic yet again. If kids' movies like "Dumbo" and "The Rescuers" aren't already in your library, they're available right now to stream on Netflix, along with a lot of newer movies that will appeal to your kids (and to the kid in you).

Pop-culture seems covered in J.M. Barrie's fairy dust right now, what with NBC's live stage-musical of Peter Pan scheduled for Dec. 4. Fans of Disney's Tinker Bell series can also mark their calendars on March 3, when the seventh Tink film—Tinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeast—arrives on DVD and Blu-ray. In the latest animated adventure, the peace and calm of Pixie Hollow are disrupted by a mysterious beast that strikes fear in the hearts of some of the fairies—but not Fawn, the brave and sweet animal-lover who looks past the NeverBeast's frightening exterior. In the exclusive new trailer,...

One word, John Lasseter: Plastics. The Pixar chief who changed the animation game with his innovative use of computer technology in 1995's Toy Story will return to the directing chair to make a fourth movie about the adventures of Woody, Buzz, and the gang, Walt Disney CEO Robert Iger announced Tuesday. The film is set to hit theaters in June 16, 2017, and in a somewhat surprising twist it will be written by Rashida Jones, formerly of NBC's Parks and Recreation, and her screenwriting partner Will McCormack (who penned the 2012 indie romantic comedy Celeste and Jesse Forever.) The story was conceived,...

Last week, I was given the unique opportunity to visit DisneyToon Studios, the division of Disney Animation that is responsible for the increasingly wonderful "Tinker Bell" and "Planes" movies. (Their building is right across the street from Disney Television Animation and it took every iota of my self-control not to dash across the walkway and start asking questions about "Gravity Falls" and "Wander Over Yonder.")
Essentially, the folks at DisneyToon Studios gave us a tour of Piston Peak National Park, the huge park at the center of "Planes: Fire & Rescue" (and, if you missed the movie, you really should make up for that -- it's out on DVD, Blu-ray, and Disney Movies Anywhere on November 4th).
In the movie, Dusty (Dane Cook), the erstwhile prop plane who dreamed of being a world-famous racer, is sidelined due to mechanical issues. He finds a new calling in his role as a...

Earlier this year, Walt Disney Home Entertainment and the talented folks at DisneyToon Studios unleashed "The Pirate Fairy," a terrific direct-to-video tale that featured Tom Hiddleston as the voice of a young Captain Hook (and Christina Hendricks as Zarina, the titular fairy). It was cute and fun and magical and cemented the "Tinker Bell" spin-off movies as not just mild curiosities, but essential entertainments for children and grown fans of Disney animation. So it's with some pride that we're able to introduce the new character from the next "Tinker Bell" installment, "Legend of the NeverBeast."

"The Perks of Being a Wallflower" writer/director Stephen Chbosky is set to pen a new draft of the upcoming live-action take on Disney's animated classic "Beauty and the Beast".
Bill Condon helms the new version which includes music from both the iconic animated feature and Disney's long-running Broadway musical. Evan Spiliotopoulos ("Hercules," "Tinkerbell and the Lost Treasure") penned the original draft.
Meanwhile, Kristina Lauren Anderson has been set to pen the adaptation of the Warner Bros. Pictures feature "Invisibility" based on the young adult supernatural romance novel by David Levithan and Andrea Creme.
The story is described as a romance between a boy cursed with invisibility and the one girl who can see him.

Are Disney trying to jump aboard the young adult bandwagon with the latest piece of news? Or is this just another attempt at rejuvenating properties that are guaranteed to rake it in at the box office? You decide. According to EW, The Perks Of Being A Wallflower author-screenwriter-director-teenage saviour, Stephen Chbosky, has signed on to redraft a new version of the script for the studio’s upcoming Beauty And The Beast remake.
After the success of Wallflower, the move to enlist Chbosky might see a shift from the source material and into more adolescent waters. His take on growing up was one of those rare indie gems that truly captures what it means to have your younger years defined by music, friends and heavy, heavy introspection. He’s an author who’s got a grasp of what it means to be a kid, making him an ideal candidate to imbue...

Things are getting leaner at the House of Mouse once again. This time it’s DisneyToon Studios that is handing out pink slips. About 17 of the 60 full-time employees at the primarily direct-to-video animation group have been laid off, with some occurring last week and the rest to leave during the next month. A unit of Walt Disney Animation Studios, the John Lasseter- and Ed Catmull-run DisneyToon called a meeting August 6 to make the layoffs announcement to staff. The quickly called gathering came a day after big Disney released its ahead-of-expectations Q3 results. “There is not a lot left to cut here now, the next round of cuts could be closing us down,” one DTS employee told me.
No reason was given at the brisk meeting last week for the latest cuts at DTS, but I’m told the suspicion is threefold. First, with DTS’ Tinkerbell franchise effectively discontinued earlier this year,...

In what’s clearly the most random casting news of the day, Girls star Allison Williams has scored the lead role of Peter Pan in NBC’s Peter Pan Live. To be fair, previous casting announcements have included Christopher Walken (as Captain Hook), so it’s clear the December 4 production is going for the unconventional.
While Williams excels in the part of an insufferable perfectionist on her HBO series, she’s far from our first choice to step into those legendary tights. Maybe Marnie’s cringeworthy interpretation of Kanye West‘s “Stronger” has something to do with it?
How about Miley Cyrus? She already rocks a pixie cut and we’d love to see her twerk with Tinker Bell. Kristin Chenoweth has the Broadway chops and the small stature to make it work. Or how about infusing some diversity into the classic story by casting Jennifer Hudson? She’s already...

Hook
Written by James V. Hart, Nick Castle, Malia Scotch Marmo, and J. M. Barrie
Directed by Steven Spielberg
USA, 1991
Steven Spielberg is known the world over for creating genuine movie magic. From his blockbuster splash Jaws in 1975 up until his 2012 biopic Lincoln, Spielberg is certainly a gifted filmmaker. Very few auteurs are still work today but Spielberg keeps banging out films that dazzle the senses and leave an everlasting impression on the viewer. However, some of Spielberg’s films haven’t achieved the recognition and respect they deserve. There are certain films that this movie master made that didn’t quite achieve a high status. One such film is 1991’s Hook, a fantasy adventure which didn’t really score well with critics but filled children of the 90s with joy, innocence, and wonder.
The film follows middle-aged lawyer Peter Banning (Robin Williams), a bitter individual who has forgotten who he is.

Maleficent wasn.t a game-changer. It was, instead, the latest in what is now becoming the status quo: Live-action takes on one-time animated classics that will attempt to appeal to a familiar audience base by telling them a timeless story using a different medium. And now we know which animated classic is going to get reworked. Bill Condon, the Oscar-winning director of Gods and Monsters, Kinsey, Dreamgirls and . yes . two Twilight movies, will take a swing at a live-action Beauty and the Beast for Disney. Variety reports that screenwriter Evan Spiliotopoulos has been tapped to write the script, after tackling scripts for such in-house animated sequels like Tinkerbell and the Lost Treasure, The Jungle Book 2, Pooh.s Heffalump Movie and The Lion King 1 1/2. And HitFix added that Condon will be drawing not only from the Oscar-winning 1991 animated film, but also from the smash Broadway musical that ran for 13 years,...

The Pirate Fairy is the fifth and most recent installment in Disney’s successful series of computer-animated movies chronicling the pre-Peter Pan adventures of Tinker Bell (voiced by Arrested Development’s own Ann Veal, Mae Whitman) and her fairy friends friends in Pixie Hollow. At first, the idea of Tinker Bell not only having a voice, but using it to giggle with a bunch of CG fairies voiced by the likes of Lucy Liu, Raven-Symone, Megan Hilty and others seems like little more than a cheap cash grab, with Disney banking on little girls’ love of anything cutesy, colorful and magical. However, while I can’t speak for the other installments the series, I can say that The Pirate Fairy is a pleasantly surprising and entertaining movie that features plenty of positive messages combined with a great deal of fun.

I’m not typically fond of reviews in which the writer says, in effect, “This movie wasn’t made for me,” mostly because it seems like a way in which to award something a potentially undeserved free pass. This claim frequently crops up in reviews of family films or animation that’s targeted at kids before adults. Really, the problem stems from an attitude at places like the Walt Disney Company, where executives presume that appealing to everyone matters less if you can focus entirely on a subset of people. The best that Disney animation has to offer (though this applies to animation and family films from any studio) aims to please everyone, not just little boys or little girls. I don’t mean to suggest that saying Movie X wasn’t made for you (the general “you”) is always false or inaccurate,...

You have every right to be skeptical.
Starting in 1994, with the release of "The Return of Jafar" -- a direct-to-video sequel to "Aladdin" that auspiciously did not feature the vocal talents of Robin Williams -- Disney, under the increasingly pushy leadership of Michael Eisner, put out a steady stream of direct-to-video sequels, spin-offs, and alternate versions that did nothing to actually strengthen their respective brands. Instead, the endless sequels wore down consumers who were used to quality productions from Disney and not, say, "Cinderella III: A Stitch in Time." Because, of course, the one thing missing from the original "Cinderella" was "Back to the Future II"-style time travel.
When Disney absorbed Pixar and put Pixar executive John Lasseter and Ed Catmull in charge of the creative side of the company, that meant that the company's approach to the direct-to-home video product also changed. Planned sequels to "The Aristocats" and...

The Pirate Fairy is Disney's newest animated adventure that's heading home on April 1. Tinkerbell fans have been waiting months for this magic-filled tale, and now it's almost here!
This past weekend at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, Disney held a very special pre-screening that was hosted by Mae Whitman, the voice of Tinkerbell herself, along with producer Jenni Magee Cook. The audience got a sneak peek of the upcoming pirate adventure, and we have to admit, an advanced screening of a movie at a Disney resort is our idea of the perfect vacation.
If you can't wait two more weeks for The Pirate Fairy to land on DVD and Blu-ray (and hey, we can't blame you...) then you'll want to check out this brand new featurette. Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers) talks about his character Captain Hook, and discusses why it sometimes feels so good to be bad.

Feature Mark Harrison 5 Mar 2014 - 06:39
For every animated movie that gets made, there are dozens more that never make it. Mark looks at some failed Disney projects...
In the age of the internet, Hollywood studios are much quicker to announce the projects they have in development than they used to be. Now that the demand is there, there's a huge turnover of movie-related news every day, and if you follow it in any significant way, there are probably a whole bunch of projects that you've heard about, maybe even gotten excited about, that never came to fruition.
Still, it's not only via the easier availability of such information that we know about projects that never came to be. At a studio like Disney, projects will get as far as being fully developed in animatic form before falling apart, and the artefacts left behind from such abridged projects have made for some fascinating reading.
