it's alright
booksunlimited219 February 2008
the director was great. I think the screenplay was horrid. It's just that there were so many loop holes and unexplained things, and a lot of the stuff didn't really make sense. The direction was good for an action movie.

It seems that Van Damme is finally getting some good direction with his films.

You can expect to have a pretty good time. Eh you might be kinda bored with the dialog but the action makes up for it. scott adkins was excellent. can't wait to see more of him. great action.

This movie should have been put into a wider release than how it is. It would have made a few bits more money.

wow, an excellent dtv actioner

Warning: Spoilers
Lately i have been very impressed with Jean Claude Van Damme's recent form in his newer DTV movie's.The hard corps was entertaining if not a little shallow,Until Death was superb and show cased one of Van Damme's best performances ,Then he moved onto The Shepherd:border patrol,a solid action movie with some reminiscence of some of the older classic Van Damme movie's.The fight scene's were impressive, in-particular the final show down with complex camera work and terrific athletic prowess.I hope Jean Claude continues in this way, some of his recent effort's are even more impressive than when he was a big box office draw. 8 out of 10

Not too bad.
ColonelFaulkner6 September 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This one brings my collection of Van Damme films up to 25, some good, some stinkers; and although It may be fair to say I'm a fan, I'm no fanatic, haven't watched any of his films for a while and I certainly couldn't tell you what he eats for breakfast in the morning or which high school he attended. Like Forrest Gump might have said about his movies, a JCVD film is like a box of chocolates, you just don't know what you're going to get (though you most likely have have some inkling) and there are more than a few turkey flavoured ones in his box).

With perhaps the lamest title of all his films and a dubious 'Steven Seagal' like premise, not to mention some cringe inducing dialogue, fair share of implausability and plot holes (nice to know they have a full time bomb squad and short notice standby in a little border town of 1800), this could be called something of a coin toss or even something to avoid for the more discerning film fan who can't stand the guy or who feels the urge for more intellectual stimulation.

For those with enough of that in their other pursuits and who just want to kick back and be entertained, you may be pleasantly surprised. On a night I was expecting to fall asleep in front of anything I watched, It kept me interested and awake, something 'The Godfather' didn't do last week.

As an out and out action vehicle, I found this pretty entertaining. It keeps moving along, with several spectacular and hard hitting ass whipping scenes, sufficient gunplay thrown in and a score reminiscent of 'Once Upon a Time in the West'.

As far as his recent films go, I would compare this to 'Wake of Death' in terms of quality and while it didn't quite nail it (like most of his films) for the reasons mentioned previously, it wasn't without some quality moments.

5/10 as a 'movie' & 7/10 for the bits you watch this sort of film for = 6/10 overall, a good pass mark. I recommend it and don't think it would disappoint any action fan who isn't expecting a Van Damme flick to send them into orbit.

Excellent throwback to 90's Van Damme
belialprod31 March 2008
Unlike many of his action "contemporaries" (uh, you know who) Van Damme has at least been trying to improve himself as an actor with his direct to video films, while working with better directors. Many have been attempts at something different, like the somewhat surreal "in Hell". This is applaud able, but who really wants a Van Damme movie with little or no action? The Shepherd is a throwback to his 90's films where plot was minimal and fights and other action scenes took centre stage, where everyone knew they were making a pot boiler and had fun doing it. And thank God, because while no biggie plot wise, this movie delivers everything you'd want from a Van Damme movie. Great if happily familiar martial art fights (it even opens in that old action movie stand by, a diner)lots of guns and explosions, and even a torture scene for our boy. It's also well directed, starting with a great sense of humor then turning dead serious when it needs to. The last 15 minutes or so are wall to wall boom boom.

For pure action, for what Van Damme does best, this is absolutely his most entertaining film since he went DTV.

A modestly entertaining action flick with some decent scenes
rlange-320 July 2008
Worth the entertainment value of a rental, especially if you like action movies. This one features the usual car chases, fights with the great Van Damme kick style, shooting battles with the 40 shell load shotgun, and even terrorist style bombs. All of this is entertaining and competently handled but there is nothing that really blows you away if you've seen your share before.

The plot is made interesting by the inclusion of a rabbit, which is clever but hardly profound. Many of the characters are heavily stereotyped -- the angry veterans, the terrified illegal aliens, the crooked cops, the indifferent feds, the bitchy tough lady station head, the crooked politician, the fat federale who looks like he was typecast as the Mexican in a Hollywood movie from the 1940s. All passably acted but again nothing special.

I thought the main villains were pretty well done and fairly well acted. By the end of the movie you certainly knew who the good guys were and weren't. There was an emotional lift as the really bad ones got their just deserts. Very simplistic, but then you weren't expecting Hamlet, right? The only thing I found really annoying was the constant cuts to VDs daughter during the last fight scene.

Not bad. Not good. Passable 4.

I enjoyed it
evo-lander13 September 2008
I enjoyed it. There you go, I said it again. I even bought this movie on DVD and enjoyed it a couple of more times. Call me old fashioned but I prefer movies like this to garbage like Die Hard 4 which hold up the box office and get critical acclaim just because you have some old guy saving America. Van Damme moves well for a guy of his age(47 I think), delivering kicks that reminds one of Kickboxer. If you like old school action and and explosions, this is the movie to watch. This is one of Van Damme's best works.

Van Damme and Steven Seagal movies get released theatrically where I live so I never miss a chance to watch our old school action stars on the big screen.

its better than "second in command".. but not much else!!!!!
dvsdevitt19 February 2008
anybody that would come on here and check this page on "the shepherd: border patrol" is no doubt a van damme fan like me.....I have seen all of his movies (i own all of them) and love allot of them. I was so excited the other night when i got the link to "the shepherd" and was hoping for the best.... but unfortunately this one is weak...actually its budge! The action scenes are OK ... van damme does kick a chair at a guy in a restaurant and it looks wicked... but the gun fights are lame and so are the characters... it a very dark film... dark as in no budget for shooting at night kinda dark..lol I was hoping for a DTV movie like "wake of death".. which was frikin wicked for a direct to video..... But don't worry its still better than "second in command".. but how can it not be lol........ ( I have nutting against DTV movies ... (i love cheesy action movies) anyways they should have just called it border patrol.... because that is what the movie is about..(Why is it called "the Shepard?").. plus it sounds much better as a van damme movie title..(he has some hilarious titles) I really tried to find things about this movie that I liked but its below average unfortunately........... the town thats supposed to be some Texas town .. is jokes.. its a ghost town........ most likely in some country across the world.. and van damme might say a total of 50 WORDS in the entire movie........SERIOUSLY!!

And van damme's pet rabbit... and all of the flash back stuff is wack!! so is his partner........ the female boss was o.k what can i say about this movie...... its pretty bad.. it had no budget ( it looks cheap) ......... I thought it was gonna be a wicked movie man was i disappointed........................ I am as big a fan as anyone.

This film is good in it's genre
tirkkanen5 March 2008
This film is good in it's genre and that genre is naturally action with a little/average budget. Looks like Van Damme delivers greatly better performances when he has a good director guiding him. There is your basic bar brawl, alley scene and mostly a lot of gun fighting. Some basic drama, but nothing too deep. Isaac Florentine directs an OK action flick if you ignore the weak plot and the holes in it. But the person who steals the show is:

Scott Adkins. How come this guy isn't a massive Arnold Schwarzenegger caliber action star that I don't know. Director Isaac Florentine has made a movie with Scott Adkins before called Special Forces (2003) which has some unbelievable martial arts talent that will satisfy the most demanding kungfu enthusiastic. Another amazing Scott Adkins feature is Undisputed 2. Check this guy out and make a noise, this guy needs to get super action star status and he needs to get it now!

What else can I say about the movie? It's Van Damme stepping up a notch from some of his most recent work. No Oscars here for sure, but you already knew that. But never the less it has a nice little town feel and I could find worse ways to spend my time. So I'm giving this a solid 7 out of 10 in it's genre.

It's so far from BAD.. it's the worst.
arrayat29 February 2008
Technically I'am a Van Damme Fan, or I was. this movie is so bad that I hated myself for wasting those 90 minutes. Do not let the name Isaac Florentine (Undisputed II) fool you, I had big hopes for this one, depending on what I saw in (Undisputed II), man.. was I wrong ??! all action fans wanted a big comeback for the classic action hero, but i guess we wont be able to see that soon, as our hero keep coming with those (going -to-a-border - far-away-town-and -kill -the-bad-guys- than-comeback- home) movies I mean for God's sake, we are in 2008, and they insist on doing those disappointing movies on every level. Why ??!!! Do your self a favor, skip it.. seriously.

Another good DTV from Van Damme
captngravity4 March 2008
After seeing Undisputed 2, I knew what to expect from Isaac Florentine.

The Shepherd: Border Patrol is a decent flick (not Van Damme's best, but definitely not his worst.) There is some bad acting from VD's supporting cast, but it makes sense.

The storyline and plot has all been done before, so it's nothing new. I mean this is Van Damme. We don't really expect much of an amazing plot do we? So lets talk about what we all want to watch this movie for anyway: the fighting.

Without giving anything away, I thought the way the fights were filmed and shot were well done, way better than a few of VD's recent movies such as Second in Command, in which the entire end fight is HORRIBLE. With Florentine behind the camera, and if you've seen Undisputed 2, he seems to know how to photograph fights and enjoys it. A few of the fights in The Shepherd reminded me of VD's older stuff which is what we all want to see. The fights were good, and i said "hah, awesome" out loud a few times. But I was hoping for just a bit more considering how good I thought Undisputed 2 was.

Something I found intriguing was VD's daughter in the film, I thought "wow she's kinda hot" come to find out, its Bianca Van Varenberg, JC's real life daughter. I have never seen her before so that was a nice treat.

All in all, this movie is not half bad. Yeah the story has been done before but at least JC was attempting to make a good movie. Next time though, add more hand to hand combat! I think He still has what it takes to do another big budget movie...his acting has improved since he's been doing DTV's and he really is in great shape at 47. I don't know about you but I'm one of the ones who thinks that most of his DTV's are actually good with the exception of Derailed. All he needs to do is get back into "bloodsport" shape, and make a martial arts movie...and I think people would respond well even though he's not jet Li. This movie is definitely worth the rental. =)

Generic
livefastdieorea12 March 2008
I had high hopes for this one until they changed the name to 'The Shepherd : Border Patrol, the lamest movie name ever, what was wrong with just 'The Shepherd'. This is a by the numbers action flick that tips its hat at many classic Van Damme films. There is a nice bit of action in a bar which reminded me of hard target and universal soldier but directed with no intensity or flair which is a shame. There is one great line about 'being p*ss drunk and carrying a rabbit' and some OK action scenes let down by the cheapness of it all. A lot of the times the dialogue doesn't match the characters mouth and the stunt men fall down dead a split second before even being shot. The end fight is one of the better Van Damme fights except the Director tries to go a bit too John Woo and fails also introducing flashbacks which no one really cares about just gets in the way of the action which is the whole point of a van Damme film.

Not good, not bad, just average generic action.

Well good movie but.....
windsor_playa18 February 2008
Well it is a good movie. However, you have to admit that Van Dame's movies haven't been so great lately. On the other hand if you are a hardcore van Dame fan you should watch this as there is a huge improvement with fighting scenes. Also What i really liked is the music beautiful music. am sure this will kill time if you are action fan. As for Isaac Florentine the director of Undisputed 2, i don't think he did a good job as he did with Undisputed.I cant wait when one day Van Dame's movies hit the cinemas before the DVD. Maybe, one day:).

In the end it worth the watch if you got no other action movies to watch, this could make your hour and half fun.

I expected more but a decent effort from van damme
canike0724 February 2008
Jean claude van damme, scott adkins and director issac florentine-this had the chance to be better then undisputed 2 but for some reason they just don't get it right. Van damme's fight scenes are nothing more than a couple of front kicks and roundhouses, nothing spectacular-just average. The movie is low budget and the supporting actors aside from scott adkins all need acting classes but I could have looked way beyond that because all I wanted to see was jean-claude doing what he used to do best and MAN! was I let down. Maybe van damme should go to a couple of pilates classes to try and regain some flexability. I think he still has the makings to have a comeback, He just needs to find the right project.

The bunny was the best actor
ElectrifiedToast28 September 2008
Honestly awful film, bad editing, awful lighting, dire dialog and scrappy screenplay.

The lighting at is so bad there's moments you can't even see what's going on, I even tried to playing with the contrast and brightness so I could see something but that didn't help.

They must have found the script in a bin, the character development is just as awful and while you hardly expect much from a Jean-Claude Van Damme film this one manages to hit an all time low. You can't even laugh at the cheesy'ness.

The directing and editing are also terrible, the whole film follows an extremely tired routine and fails at every turn as it bumbles through the plot that is so weak it's just unreal.

There's not a lot else to say other than it's really bad and nothing like Jean-Claude Van Damme's earlier work which you could enjoy.

Avoid like the plaque, frankly words fail me in condemning this "film".

Van Damme's back to kicking some butt!
ManBehindTheMask639 September 2008
Well...it's about time! Van Damme is back and kicking in this action thriller that's his best film in recent years. The plot isn't too inventive but the whole border patrol theme is interesting and the ex-marines as drug smugglers twist is cool. But what makes this movie awesome is the fact that Van Damme is back to doing martial arts again. His latest films have been more acting oriented, but in "The Shepard", JCVD is back to dropping the bad guys and looks to be in excellent shape. There are some impressive fight scenes and Van Damme shows he can still pull out the old famous 360-spinning heel kick. For being a low-budget action movie, it does have good sets and great stunts. Van Damme says some humorous lines and shows that he's improving as an actor. I'm glad he's back to dealing out some Van Damage...i've been let down by the lack of fighting in his recent films. Scott Adkins is great in his role and Van Damme and him have a 1 on 1 showdown at the end. Overall, it's one of Van Damme's better films and it will keep you entertained. A must rent for JCVD fans. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed for another martial arts epic like "Bloodsport" or "Kickboxer". Nok Su Kow!

A long fall from Undisputed 2...
Kurt_Wright29 February 2008
It actually pains me to say it, but this movie was horrible on every level. The blame does not lie entirely with Van Damme as you can see he tried his best, but let's face it, he's almost fifty, how much more can you ask of him? I find it so hard to believe that the same people who put together Undisputed 2; arguably the best (western) martial arts movie in years, created this. Everything from the plot, to the dialog, to the editing, to the overall acting was just horribly put together and in many cases outright boring and nonsensical. Scott Adkins who's fight scenes seemed more like a demo reel, was also terribly underused and not even the main villain which is such a shame because 1) He is more than capable of playing that role and 2) The actual main villain was not only not intimidating at all but also quite annoying. Again, not blaming Van Damme. I will always be a fan, but avoid this one.

Descent Movie!!!
jmi84-128 February 2008
I like the shepherd! Sure the acting wasn't good but the fight scenes were nice. Van damme throws some nice kicks and so does adkins. The story was average. A Texas cop battles smugglers. This movie did everything a van damme movie should do which is martial arts and action. Van damme was never a good actor. I think this movie is better than van dammmes last 2. If you're looking for an Oscar winning performance you're not gonna get it here but if you're looking for action and martial arts then this movie is for you. Scott adkins is an amazing martial artist and unfortunately the public has gotten tired of martial art superstars but his movies in this movie are great. Van damme delivers strong kicks and it's good to see him performing martial arts again since he has not in his last 4 or 5 movies. This movie is definitely worth watching if you're a van damme fan.

very average!
tubs_is5 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
its a totally average film with a few semi-alright action sequences that make the plot seem a little better and remind the viewer of the classic van dam films. parts of the plot don't make sense and seem to be added in to use up time. the end plot is that of a very basic type that doesn't leave the viewer guessing and any twists are obvious from the beginning. the end scene with the flask backs don't make sense as they are added in and seem to have little relevance to the history of van dam's character. not really worth watching again, bit disappointed in the end production, even though it is apparent it was shot on a low budget certain shots and sections in the film are of poor directed quality

Not a bad Van Damme effort...
dee.reid30 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Some people will notice that since Belgian-born martial arts star Jean-Claude Van Damme, who was at the peak of his Hollywood popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s, retreated to the direct-to-video route in the early 21st century, that some of his movies have gotten progressively better, both in terms of his acting abilities and the increased realism of his martial arts hand-to-hand combat sequences.

2001's "Replicant" is one example. "In Hell" (2003) is another. 2008's "The Shepherd: Border Patrol" is the latest of his that I've seen. The single best film Van Damme has ever done in his entire career is "JCVD" (2008); while not a true action movie in the usual sense, his performance in that film is worthy of an Oscar nomination ("Time" Magazine said so at the time - I'm just confirming it). I was also quite pleased with his villainous turn in "The Expendables 2" (2012) when I saw that earlier this month.

But back to "The Shepherd: Border Patrol." In the film, which is competently directed by Isaac Florentine, Van Damme plays Jack Robideaux, a former New Orleans police officer who has just transferred to the U.S. Border Patrol agency in New Mexico. Carrying along with him his pet rabbit (also named Jack), he knocks heads with the sexy no-non-sense Border Patrol commander, Captain Ramona Garcia (Natalie J. Cobb), and soon finds himself at war with a team of rogue ex-U.S. Special Forces commandos-turned-mercenaries working with a Mexican drug cartel just across the U.S.-Mexico border. And it is later revealed that Robideaux has a personal vendetta against the mercenaries and the cartel.

"The Shepherd: Border Patrol" is not a bad film at all. Like I said earlier, the film is worth noting for a noticeably more dramatic performance from Jean-Claude Van Damme, and fight scenes that are more realistic and lack the flashy glitter of the fight sequences from his earlier Hollywood heyday. Since Van Damme was 47 at the time of the film's release, he is still remarkably well kept-in-shape, and can still hold his own against the legions of bad guys in his way. And he is still arguably one of the best screen kickers out there. His greatest fight sequence, of course, will be his climatic showdown with mercenary henchman Karp (Scott Adkins, who also appeared as Van Damme's chief henchman in "The Expendables 2"). That scene alone will be worth the price of the DVD.

As a direct-to-video effort, "The Shepherd: Border Patrol" contains better-than-usual production values, since these types of movies are usually quickly, and cheaply, made, and typically it shows. This looks like it did not have a real big budget behind it, but Isaac Florentine obviously put forth some effort to make the movie look good and cast actors capable of putting on decent performances and staging really cool-looking action scenes.

In other words, it's a worthy straight-to-video Jean-Claude Van Damme effort that proves that he still has what it takes to deliver the action.

Typical Van Damme movie.
greengenes24 June 2009
This movie was better than I thought it would be since most Jean Claude Van Damme movies I've seen since about 1995 have just sucked it. Van Damme and Scott Adkins are okay but this movie still is no better than the average Van Damme flick. Director Isaac Florentine, this is probably his fault since Van Damme gives a good performance (yes you read that right he doesn't suck in this movie). But his fighting is slowing down because his fight scenes are all just a few kicks and punches with nothing spectacular or anything you haven't seen a hundred times before in other Van Damme movies. The acting is okay and the story is actually pretty good but the fight scenes are below average and the directing is not very good.

Interesting stylized film that definitely could have been much better.
Juxtrip11 April 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Jean-Claude plays a tired, sad looking character which works well for this movie; he's been through the death of his daughter due to drugs and is out for revenge on the suppliers as a border patrol agent. The film is quite stylish, with parts bordering on a spaghetti-western style with both the cinematography and music. The style of the film is much more interesting than the story, as are some of the fight scenes and I was pleased to see that most of them were filmed clearly (wide shots) so you can actually see what is happening (unlike some bigger budget films, like the recent Batman, that show fights in close-up so you can't really tell what's going on). The only bad side to the fighting is that the best bad-guy martial artist at the end has much better kicks than Jean-Claude which is not what you would expect if you've seen many of Jean-Claude's films. Overall an interesting stylized film that definitely could have been much better but was still entertaining.

Some of the people who worked on this film deserve far better than the end result
rossboyask7 March 2008
Isaac Florentine has made some of the best western Martial Arts action movies ever produced. In particular US Seals 2, Cold Harvest, Special Forces and Undisputed 2 are all action classics. You can tell Isaac has a real passion for the genre and his films are always eventful, creative and sharp affairs, with some of the best fight sequences an action fan could hope for. In particular he has found a muse with Scott Adkins, as talented an actor and action performer as you could hope for. This is borne out with Special Forces and Undisputed 2, but unfortunately The Shepherd just doesn't live up to their abilities.

There is no doubt that JCVD looks better here fight-wise than he has done in years, especially in the fight he has (for pretty much no reason) in a prison cell, and in the final showdown with Scott, but look in his eyes. JCVD seems to be dead inside. There's nothing in his eyes at all. It's like he just doesn't care about anything throughout the whole film. And this is the leading man.

There are other dodgy aspects to the film, script-wise and visually, but the main problem is that you are utterly unable to empathise with the hero of the film. A genuine shame as I know we all wanted this film to be as special as it genuinely could have been. There are some good bits, mostly the action scenes themselves. This film had a terrific director and action choreographer, and an awesome opponent for JCVD to face down. This could have been the one to bring the veteran action star back up to scratch in the balls-out action movie stakes.

Sincerely a shame that this didn't happen.

Run for the Damme border!
ericthered014 March 2009
This is the best direct-to-DVD effort from Van Damme that I have seen yet. Van Damme plays a border patrol agent who is out to stop heroin smugglers trying to cross into the United States. The action in this movie is great and the fight scenes rank with Van Damme's best. Costar Scott Adkins shows why he should be the next big star in the martial arts genre. For further evidence check out "Undisputed 2". Adkins is so good in fact that before I watched "The Shepherd", I thought that Van Damme might not look very believable in defeating him on screen. Van Damme holds his own though and although he isn't quite as athletic as Adkins is, he can still kick with the best of them. All of the fight scenes in this film are very well done and the gun battles are above average for this type of film as well. The only negative thing I can say about this movie is that the story is a little underdeveloped. I think Van Damme's character's motives should have been presented earlier in the movie, especially in regard to why he carries around a rabbit. The reason he does is very cool but you don't find out until the very end. There are a couple of other things that are never really explained either but this is a Van Damme movie so you know where the priority lies in making this kind of movie and it ain't character development. Overall though, this is a solid action movie that I recommend. So run for the Damme border!

Deadly Strikes...
fmarkland3219 July 2009
Jean-Claude Van Damme stars as a border guard forced to fight Mexican drug runners in this adequate martial arts actioner that finds Van Damme in good form, and that has some really good fights. I'm not sure if this is Jean-Claude Van Damme's best direct to DVD effort but it certainly feels like it. The plot is of course negligible, the characters are thin as paper and the story is just an excuse to have Van Damme kick butt and showcase his martial arts. For a fan of such Shepherd:Border Patrol works as what it sets out to do, and it succeeds in a Bloodsport/Kickboxer/Universal Soldier way.In other words it feels like an late 80s/early 90s Van Damme flick and I was happy with such. Indeed Van Damme's one on one with Scott Adkins is great, the action is exciting and I had a lot of fun with this movie. This isn't of course as good as JCVD or even Bloodsport, Kickboxer and Universal Soldier, but it is Van Damme's most fun outing in a long time and Van Damme forgets the over the top melodrama (In Hell and Until Death) to deliver non-stop martial artistry. Sure the movie is stupid, but the pace is fast and it really does feel like a classic Van Damme movie, and really what's much better than that?

Cheap and bad
nicolovvassil23 February 2008
This flick is a waste of time.I expect from an action movie to have more than 2 explosions and some shooting.Van Damme's acting is awful. He never was much of an actor, but here it is worse. He was definitely better in his earlier movies. His screenplay part for the whole movie was probably not more than one page of stupid nonsense one liners. The whole dialog in the film is a disaster, same as the plot. The title "The Shepherd" makes no sense. Why didn't they just call it "Border patrol"? The fighting scenes could have been better, but either they weren't able to afford it, or the fighting choreographer was suffering from lack of ideas. This is a cheap low type of action cinema.
