Fran van Hartesveldt wrote this popular episode, which was later reworked into another story. Fran was best known for writing for Betty White's early tv show, DATE WITH THE ANGELS, which has been turning up in reruns --after about 60 plus years.
A rare German pipe becomes the center of attention. Fred Rutherford sends the pipe to Ward, who is vacationing in Europe. This gesture actually makes Fred out to be a pretty good friend... for a few minutes anyway.
Of course, temptation arises and Beaver and Larry have to "examine" the pipe. Beave is egged on by Larry to smoke it, and the damage is done. No matter how much Beave washes the pipe -- there's evidence! Naturally, at first, Ward suspects Wally, and another can of worms is opened unless Beave tells the real deal truth.
This story, if you follow the series, was later reworked into another "den episode" where Beave gets a hold of Ward's prize baseball, much in the same fashion as the pipe. The pipe survived, but the baseball didn't! There was also a similar episode all about Ward's golf clubs. Lots of destruction in the Clever household.
Without fail, a salute to Larry Mondello for smoothly talking Beave into yet another scandal. By this stage in the series, the great debate was who was worse; Eddie Haskell or Larry?
