An Incredible Episode
katierose29519 March 2008
Warning: Spoilers
"In My Time of Dying" is basically the final part of the season one cliff hanger. It kicks of season two in such a bold and surprising way that, really, I think it's one of my favorite episodes of the series. I actually like season two better than season one, because of risks it takes in its storytelling. It deepens the mythology arc and the characters, really creating some incredible story lines. Season two is all about the brothers dealing with Sam's powers and John's death, both of which are factors in "In My Time of Dying." If you're going to watch the season, you really need to start with this episode.

"In My Time Dying" revolves around Dean nearly dying. After the car crash in "Devil's Trap," he's in a coma, but walking around outside of his body. John & Sam are okay, but are worried about Dean, who the doctors say won't wake up. Sam is convinced that they need to use some kind of supernatural hoo-doo to mojo him back. But John doesn't seem very focused on that. He insists that Sam go and get the Colt from the trunk on the crashed Impala. Meanwhile, a Reaper is after Dean, trying to get him to leave this plane. (Or something. She's not real specific on what exactly the plan is.) But she says that Dean must go with her or be stuck as an angry spirit forever. Dean is torn. He fears becoming the very thing he hunts. (see season three's "Maleus Malifacarum.") But he also doesn't want to leave Sam and John. What he doesn't know is that John is cutting a deal with the YED. He's tracing the Colt and his own life to save Dean. Dean wakes up, but John dies in his place.

There are some great parts to this episode. I like watching Sam & John shout at each other as they try and figure out the best way to help Dean. Without Dean there to play peacemaker, the two of them have a hard time communicating. Plus, it's interesting how much Sam identifies the Impala with Dean. He won't give up on fixing the Impala because it would like giving up on his brother. I also like the boys trying to communicate through the talking board. Dean mutters that he feels like he's a slumber party, but he sits there and tries it, which is cute. I'm not sure that the talking board is really doing anything in its own right, though. Sam had been "sensing" Dean for most of the episode. Using Dean's words and hearing him. I think the connection between the brothers was what was enabling them to talk, the talking board was just giving them a way to do it. And it's sweet that when Dean wakes up out of his body he's still more concerned about John and Sam than his own problems. He's the one who reacts with relief when the doctor says John is awake, Sam just wants to know how Dean is. And when he's almost taken by the Reaper, Dean takes the time to reassure Sam that he won't leave him. I'm not sure if Dean would've gone with the Reaper even after she told him he could go evil if he stayed. Not if it meant leaving Sammy, which fits in with season 3. It's interesting that the episode never shows his final choice, so it can be read either way. Finally, I just love the YED. He's so wonderfully evil.

The best, most heartbreaking parts of this episode come from the talks between John and Dean, though. At first, when Dean's a ghost, he's ranting at John for not trying to save him. John just sits silently by his bedside, as Dean paces around, furious that he's given everything to John and John isn't trying to save him now. But, as the episode goes on we see that John IS doing something to save his son. He's trading his life to save Dean's. When he talks to Dean for the last time, he starts to cry. Explaining that he put too much on Dean's shoulders and that he's always been so proud of the way Dean kept the family going. Dean instantly knows that something is wrong with his father, and asks what's going on. But John presses forward, telling Dean to watch out for Sammy. Dean automatically says that he will, but what he doesn't know yet what John means. (The full truth will come out in "Hunted.") But really John's telling Dean three separate things with that statement. 1)Protect Sam. 2)Dean should protect HIMSELF from Sam. 3)Dean should watch for changes in Sam. It's just great writing.

On the down side, I miss John. Also, I'm sorry that Dean doesn't remember any of his out-of-body experience after he wakes up. It would be nice if he could recall how John and Sam worked to save him. Also, if John knew how to summon the YED why didn't he try that when he first got the Colt? Also, I'm not sure how the idea of trapped spirits in this episode ties in with "Roadkill" later in the season.

My favorite part of the episode: Dean's a smashing a glass as a ghost and saying "Dude, I full on Swayzed that mother!" Perfect line.

Supernatural " In My Time Of Dying"
hevenly_godess30 September 2006
I was interested in this show since it began but never started watching it until just recently, I find that this episode is by far the best. The episode "In My Time Of Dying", manages to keep the viewer's interest until the cliffhanger at the very end. It is impossible not to get attached to this cast of very attractive men. Their characters are down-to-earth and easily relatable (considering that they deal with the supernatural). You can't help but be upset, angry, afraid and happy when they are. Amazing and freaky show. Excellent. I will continue watching it, anticipating every week.

Touching, brilliant episode
hotcountry_chick2 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
"In My Time of Dying" is, in my opinion, among the best episodes of Supernatural. First, the viewer witnesses just how strong the bond is between Sam and Dean; second, the cliffhanger at the end is fantastic - what is the secret John whispers to Dean before his death? -; and finally, this episode introduces the theme of sacrifice which is so predominant within the show. In "Time of Dying", Dean is lying in a coma, on the verge of death. He goes through an out of body experience, witnessing not only his lifeless body, but the grief shared by his brother and father, as well as the tension between them, which is usually mediated by Dean himself. Now that he is unable to referee the two, the viewer can see the two butt heads, with no one to cool them down. While a spirit, Dean tries to communicate with Sam (who does sense his presence and eventually talks to him via Ouija board) and hunt a strange girl, who is later revealed to be a Reaper. In the end, John (who is not sitting idly, as Sam believes) sells his soul to the Yellow Eyed Demon, trading his life for his son's.

I loved how Sam was determined not to write off the Impala; he associates the car with his brother, and believes that giving up on it would be like giving up on Dean. I have always loved the emotional bond of the brothers, and Padalecki and Ackles are brilliant in portraying that love. Jeffrey Dean Morgan is also solid as John, a character who will be greatly missed. Excellent episode, an easy ten stars.

Warning: Spoilers
Some people think this should be the season one's finale instead. But I don't, It is the perfect start for a perfect season. The episodes picks up right where the "Devil's trap" ended setting the plot for the coming episodes but with an even more awesome cliffhanger ending.

"In my time of dying" is the turning point in the Winchesters' life. It sure has a very overwhelming effect on the whole season and the development of the boys characters and the choices they make.

After the accident, Dean wakes up in a hospital to find out that he is severely injured and in a coma. The doctors think he might never wake up and that he is already fighting very hard. Sam refuses to let his brother go and begs his father to do something. Meanwhile, A reaper is chasing after Dean disguising as a pretty girl named Tessa, trying to convince him to die and go with her or else he would eventually become one of those angry spirits he has been hunting.

There is some important parts in this episode:

1- Dean's main concern when he wakes up is to make sure Sam and John are OK, not caring about himself.

2- Sam arguing with John about hunting the Yellow Eyed Daemon, And we can see Sam putting his desires to hunt THE Daemon aside for the sake of his brother's safety.

3- Sam sensing the presence of his brother and using a Ouija board to communicate with him, proves how strong is the bond between the brothers.

4- Dean begging Tessa not to take him, because he can't die and leave his family behind was just heartbreaking. Even when he is dying, he is not worried about himself but about Sam and John.

5- The very important question is left hanging in this episode: What are the plans The Yellow Eyed Daemon has for Sam? And what did John know and is not telling the boys?

6- When Sam is angry with John for disappearing the night before John asks him not to fight right now. Sam senses there is something wrong with John but John says that he is just tired. (Interesting since Dean later uses the same words whenever he is putting his life on the line for Sam)

7- It is very sad that the only sweet words Dean hears from John was the last words he ever said to him. (I love this innocence in his eyes when John told him how proud he was of Dean). But even the more sad thing is that John had to lay yet another weight on Dean's shoulder by telling him the secret that won't be revealed till later on.

8- And finally, How cruel those last words were "Time of death 10:41 am".

This is by far the best season's premier on the whole show. But I just wish Dean could remember how hard Sam was trying to save him. I wish he could just know how much he meant to Sam (after all they "were starting to be brothers again"). Also I like how Sam sees the Impala as a reflection of Dean and refuses to give up on it because that means he has to give up on Dean.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan is sure gonna be missed in this series he was such a treat to have on the show.

Death makes great entertainment
letsplaydead29 September 2006
An awesome episode. I enjoyed every moment of it, and really loved the insightful glimpses we get in all the characters, especially Dean. We get to see him be his usual macho self with some added loathing to boot. I kind of expected something to happen to the other however. They really set it up that way. The thing that bothered me the most is that whenever one of the Winchesters gets healed it is an instantaneous thing. I would find this unbelievable show a bit more believable if the characters weren't always almost dying and then all of the sudden, they are in perfect health. My one qualm but on the whole this was an awesome episode for an awesome show.

Is An Angel Watching Him?
claudio_carvalho26 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
After the collision of the truck with the car, John, Sam and Dean Winchester are sent to a hospital with Dean in coma. He avoids being taken by The Reaper and communicates with Sam using a Ouija Board, while John summons The Demon and negotiates the life of Dean, giving the colt and sacrificing his own life to save his son.

The first episode of the Second Season is great dramatic and tragic conclusion of the last episodes of the First Season. I felt sorrow for John, dealing with his greatest enemy to save the life of Dean. Coincidently it was broadcast today in the cable television and I had the chance to see it. My vote is nine.

Title (Brazil): "Na Hora da Minha Morte" ("In the Time of My Death"

Obs: On 04 June 2008, I watched this episode again on DVD.

One of the best directed episodes gets season 2 started right
CubsandCulture7 September 2019
This episode is a class on how to do more with less at creating atmospherics. The use of long takes and the way Dean disappears during them utterly works to capture the tone of Dean being caught in between states. Tessa's entire story is captured in how light and shadow is used to shift our feelings about her. Innocent one moment, ominous the next. Couple that with a few gorgeous shots-i.e. coffee cup-and this is one of the best directed episodes of the entire season.

The script does an economical job of setting up the central dynamics of the season 2-i.e. Dean's guilt, what is wrong with Sam-while telling a compelling critical chapter in the Winchester story. This is a solid opening to the season.

The question of survival
Red_Identity9 September 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Season 1 was a brilliant season, a brilliant start to the series. However, In My Time of Dying shows a larger sophistication for drama and represents the start of an even better season.

The episode has a gloomy tone looming around throughout, one that is controlled enough to affect any viewer. It shows Dean on the blink of death, and how he has to deal with almost having to leave his family apart. What I loved most about the episode was understanding what a reaper told Dean. That he might become what he hunts, an angry spirit, and how over the years spirits descend because they were not able to move on from limbo, a problem that arises in Dean's mind. Will he let himself go, or will he risk becoming the one thing he hates the most? The episode is brilliant and one of my personal favorites.

Not bad
mm-3918 September 2007
Warning: Spoilers
The plot devices 'In my time of dying drives the second season. The devices are: What is with Sam? What is with the big secret? Dean's guilt because of dads death. In my time of dying has two stories. 1 Dean is like the character Sam of the movie ghost. There is a reference to the movie in this show. The 2nd story, the viewer learns more about the yellow eyed demon, and how much the demon wants John to die. I just bought the 2nd season and notice the other episodes tie in with this first one. 8 out of 10 I wonder what season 3 will be like? Is Sam a changed person? Will Dean be the same person again? Will the series die with the death of the Winchesters foe?

Not what I was expecting!!!

Warning: Spoilers
I love Supernatural and watched the whole first season straight through with a friend and we were really excited about last nights show. I found that the plot was really good put it wasn't as exciting as previous episodes and they totally totaled the car which was kind of Dean's baby and made them who they were on the road. The end really surprised me and i really want to know what John told Dean before...I won't give it away if you haven't see the end. If you've never seen any of the Supernatural episodes I recommend them to anyone and everyone who likes a good laugh and scare together. I would give this episode a 9 out of ten because they totaled the car; I loved the car!!! I hope you find this helpful and start watching the show. Happy Hauntings!!!!

great season premier
princess600029 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed this episode. I really wish John hadn't made a deal with the demon. Dean's alive that's good but'John has such a big part in the boys lives and now he's gone. aside from being depressed about that Sam totaled the Impala which could really upset Dean. With everything that's happened Dean's already got to be on edge he said himself that John and Sam were his life. Dean could of caught on to the reaper thing a little faster and I loved Sam repeated to his dad what Dean said about getting a priest to do something without knowing he was repeating anything. I loved the fact that Even Dean's spirit had that sense of humor that everone loves. This season Sam also seem's to have one to a degree he still seems to not quite be over Jessica yet. I give this episode 7 if it hadn't been for John death and the Impala being totaled it would be ten.

the greatest episode
iluvmelodic_blackpink21 November 2007
well, although i just saw this episode last night, i think this is the greatest episode i've ever seen.. we can read stories about reaper in every part in our world. and.. this episode makes me cry.. "the time of dead is 10.41 am." that is the words that makes me cry. but, i'm still confused about the story line. who is the girl? is she a real human or she is the reaper? or she is just an angel? i dunno who is she.. but will somebody in this forum tell me about that girl, and tell me about the man in the boiler room beside Sam and dean's dad? and what did he do in the boiler room? and, what creature that come in from the air ventilation that comes in black shadows?
