- In 1920, John Bannerman and his wife Sarah open the Grand, a lavish hotel in Manchester. However they soon realize that the hotel is in dire financial straits, as the book-keeper committed suicide after embezzling large sums of money. To help out, John's brother Marcus, a business-man, is brought in as a third partner to raise money. He has a cynical if perpetual girl-friend, Ruth Manning, but he also has a history with Sarah, which he is keen to rekindle if he is to save the Grand.—don @ minifie-1
- It's New Year's Eve 1919 and the Grand Hotel in Manchester is to re-open after a sumptuous - and expensive - renovation. The War ended over a year ago and many want to look to the future and not to the past. John Bannerman and his wife Sarah have something else to celebrate: their son Stephen has finally been demobilized and returns home in time for the Grand's re-opening. All is not well however when they discover that their financial officer has committed suicide in one of the upstairs rooms and that they are bankrupt. Sarah approaches her brother-in-law Marcus Bannerman - a successful businessman in his own right who has never had much of an interest in the family's hotel - to bail them out but when she hears what he expects in return, she refuses to go along. For young Stephen, the horror of war has taken its toll. He's not only lost friends on the battlefield but many of those who survived are, like himself, facing difficulty accepting the purpose of it all and the price they paid.—garykmcd
