Simon Pegg is to head up a starry horror comedy about Mary Shelley, Lovecraft, Bram Stoker and Edgar Allan Poe...
Horror legend Jeffrey Combs is well known for his collaborations with director Stuart Gordon, which resulted in such wildly entertaining films as Re-Animator, From Beyond and The Pit And The Pendulum.
Combs is set to star in The Gathering, which sounds like the kind of film he'd make with Gordon. In it, Combs will play Edgar Allan Poe - a role he's inhabited twice for Gordon, first in TV's The Masters Of Horror: The Black Cat, and a second time in a stage production called Nevermore.
The Gathering will be directed by Jon Keeyes, whose previous films include Phobia (2013) and Fall Down Dead (2007). Essentially an anthology film, the premise behind The Gathering is quite ingenious: the Devil (who'll be played by Simon Pegg) gathers together a group of famous...

We return with the latest edition of the Indie Spotlight, highlighting recent independent horror news sent our way. Today’s feature includes release details for A Resurrection, the first teaser trailer for Ten, a review of Smiley, and much more:
First Teaser Trailer for Ten: “Ten is a collectivist, post-exploitation psychological thriller devised as a possible explanation for the events of the 1972 Spektor Island Massacre. On a cold December afternoon, ten women arrive at a mansion on Spektor Island, famed for years of reported hauntings and strange activities. Will they live through the night?
The all-female cast film is a response to exploitation, slasher, and thriller films, with particular focus on the kind of storytelling prominent in b-movies and genre films from the 1950s to the 1980s. It explores the meaning and fluidity of identity and takes a number of surprising turns, paying homage to filmmakers and producers such as Alfred Hitchcock,...

Written by Variety editor Steven Gaydos and starring Shannyn Sossamon (40 Days and 40 Nights), Dominique Swain (Fall Down Dead), Waylon Payne (Walk the Line), Cliff De Young (Suicide Kings) and John Diehl (Down in the Valley), the romance-thriller film tells the enigmatic tale of cult film director Mitchell Haven (Tygh Runyan, TV’s Stargate Universe), who has found the material to make his next movie. It’s a true crime story based in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina, involving a beautiful young woman, Velma Duran (Sossamon), and her older politico lover, Rafe Taschen (De Young). Jon Keeyes Director Jon Keeyes (American Nightmare, Fall Down Dead) who has shown a clear understanding of what makes a horror film scary and suspenseful will be taking over directing duties for the web series "Throwing Stones". I liked the idea behind the first season of Throwing Stones and thought it featured a dynamic young cast, but I will be honest, I thought it missed the mark in terms of crafting terror and unease. So that's why I am excited to see Keeyes taking over as he has the know how to take what was missing from season 1 and improve upon that. I think Keeyes has the potential to be the next Wes Craven (Scream) if he can score that breakout hit as he has such a command on what makes a scary film scary. Hopefully, he can bring those skill sets to Throwing Stones and show the world what...

*full disclosure: a screener of this film was provided by Image Entertainment.
Director: Jon Keeyes.
Writer: Roy Sallows.
The straight-to-dvd market is full of hits and misses. Sometimes one finds a gem, but sometimes one finds a film such as Fall Down Dead. This title, released by Image Entertainment on DVD June 14th, suffers from averageness, which is not a quality that you want in a competitive film market. One hour plus of a cat-and-mouse chase plotline between villain and protagonist just does create enough excitement. The writing from Roy Sallows (The Conspiracy of Fear) creates great characters, but not much tension in this 90 minute thriller?
The main hero is Christie played by (Dominique Swain), who has caught the eye of a serial killer (the Picasso Killer). Two detectives (Mehmet Gunsur, R. Keith Harris) also attempt to handcuff the Picasso Killer (Udo Kier), but they are merely a sidebar to...

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:
The Green Lantern – Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard
Mr. Popper’s Penguins – Jim Carrey, Carla Gugino, Angela Lansbury
Movie of the Week
The Green Lantern
The Stars: Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard
The Plot: A test pilot (Reynolds) is granted a mystical green ring that bestows him with otherworldly powers, as well as membership into an intergalactic squadron tasked with keeping peace within the universe.
The Buzz: Just slightly to the right of the “kill me now” column (see Mr. Popper’s Penguins) lies DC’s feeble attempt to answer Marvel’s mighty Thor. I am stupefied at how nerdy Reynolds looks throughout all of The Green Lantern’s marketing efforts. I can’t get over it really, and I’ve never really enjoyed Reynolds at all. Blake Lively is lovely and Peter Sarsgaard is a solid heavyweight, but I just don’t...

A serial killer hunts down a woman who witnessed him in the midst of a murder and tracks her down to a building that is locked down during the middle of a power outage.
Ok, so the story does need a bit (or maybe a lot) of work. However, that doesn't take away from the fact that Fall Down Dead does an admirable job of creating this unnerving atmosphere. Udo Kier does make for a genuinely creepy antagonist in a memorable performance. Fall Down Dead does a solid job of using dark, empty corridors to create unease. A terrific score helps to further create tension. Fall Down Dead comes alive with energy and momentum. Once it gets going, it rarely...

Recently, Image Entertainment released the DVD details for Fall Down Dead, which finished production in 2009. This is one of actor David Carradine's final roles and the film involves a city wide blackout. That is not so strange, until you add in a serial killer, named the Picasso Killer (Udo Kier). These two elements together pack a suspenseful punch and fans of horror can pick up this title in just a few days (June 14th).
Check out the trailer for Fall Down Dead, which shows one woman (Dominique Swain) experiencing a brief lack of common sense, as she travels down a dark alleyway, in a city full of murder victims. More details to come.

Since being plucked from obscurity in the early 1970s by Factory filmmaker Paul Morrissey to star in a pair of avant garde monster flicks, German actor Udo Kier has evolved into a full-fledged cult icon. Oscillating comfortably between the art house and grindhouse, Kier's hypnotic and menacing ice-blue gaze has peered out from the dark corners of a vast number of low-budget horror films, countless indies -- including several by longtime friend and collaborator Lars von Trier -- and even the occasional Hollywood blockbuster. His current output is no exception: In the so-bad-it's-amazing Christmas Eve slasher Fall Down Dead, Kier plays The Picasso Killer, for whom murder is delicious kunst. (It just had a blink-and-you-missed-it theatrical run, but several high-visibility L.A. billboards suggests a The Room - style afterlife might await it.) He follows that with a turn as a non-murderous acting teacher in Werner Herzog's true-crime drama,...
