Jack battles to exorcise a demon!
Foreverisacastironmess12311 February 2019
This is an episode that has the fine eerie ambiance of a classic ghost story, and among the many different approaches to the episodes that they tried out, this one probably has the most seriously played tones of dread and paranoia, punctuated by brief flashes of a dazzling animation style that really helps this one stand out. I actually first ever saw it in a hospital room while I was visiting my mother, so I've always kind of had that little association in the back of my mind when I've watched it! It was certainly a very eye catching episode though, very visually distinctive and atmospheric as Jack chases a weeping little girl who lost her teddy bear, and finds himself trapped in a spooky abandoned house that is revealed to be literally haunted by bad memories, ones which he witnesses firsthand through several shadowy flashbacks, and it makes for an interesting and visually striking episode as Jack must quickly decipher what's real and what's illusion in order to confront a powerful demon and set a family free... The highlight has just gotta be the scene where Jack is fighting the dragon-like demon, it's pretty amazing. Everything looks all glowy and scrawled out like a drawing, and the action happens in blurry flashes of black and white, I was a bit taken back by the scene when I first saw it, as it was pretty experimental and not like any other single moment of animation used in the whole show, and it sure made for one of the more unique fight sequences! Not exactly a firm favourite of mine but it's always great fun to be watching this brilliant show, and this is a creepily fun and effective little chapter in the legendary saga of Jack! X

Jack fulfills his purpose

Warning: Spoilers
I don't think there will be a better episode to illustrate why Jack's samurai strength of mind needs to exist in addition to the warrior skills he acquired around the world.

The true antithesis of Samurai Jack isn't really Aku - the monster you can still talk to and duel with. The primordial House Demon made Jack go all-in in his spirit to conteract and thwart the insane being with the willpower of a protector, probably like his ancestors defeated other demons even before Aku conquered Earth.

It's worth noting that the scariest and the most dangerous monster Jack faced was somewhere from his ancestral land.

And the animators went all-in to depict the Hero vs The Dragon in such a universal and archetypal way anybody would be left impressed.
