- The death of an FBI informant's wife and an agent puts Fritz in the role of peacekeeper between the FBI Special Agent in charge and Brenda.
- The LAPD and the FBI find themselves at loggerheads when the wife of a key mob witness and an FBI agent are killed. The witness, Martin DeLuca, has been under protection for years as the Justice Department built its case against the Dellamonte crime family. Brenda has only two days to solve the murders, which becomes particularly complicated when the police find a link between Special Agent Tim Hecht in charge of protecting DeLuca and the man DeLuca identifies as the killer. Throughout, Brenda is flustered by the fact that her pet cat has run away.—garykmcd
- Fritz left the patio door open and the cat left; Brenda is upset with Fritz and the cat. The FBI calls Fritz telling about a shooting, Sergeant Gabriel wants to talk to Brenda because he is there. Fritz explains the killing was in the vicinity of an FBI safe house next to a race track. There was a dual murder through a car windshield, victims a man and a woman sitting in the front seat, while the FBI protected witness is nearby, the woman victim was his wife. The pressing and immediate argument over the authority of the entire situation is due to the man shot was an FBI agent. Pope intervenes ordering Agents Tim Hecht and Fritz Howard meet him in his office in two hours. Lieutenants Provenza and Flynn take Martin DeLuca, former employee of crime boss Dellamonte and now a protected witness. Pope allows Brenda access to interview DeLuca at HQ.
DeLuca speaks about the night's events with Brenda and the Lieutenants; Michelle DeLuca sat up front, not feeling well since she lost the baby two weeks ago. Marty grabbed the dead FBI agent's gun, firing at the killer, and he ran off. He did not recognize the shooter, but he did see him before he left the scene. He tells his sad tale, I ducked, and she died; she had no place else to go as the killer fired his bullets into the agent and Michelle DeLuca. Lt. Flynn says Marty will be looking through pictures of hit men for the Dellamonte family, seeing if he can identify anyone.
In his office, Pope asks Brenda how she will proceed with the case. Brenda would need to know how the killer found out the DeLuca's location, obtaining phone and e-mail records of everyone having that information, the she would like to question Joseph Dellamonte, currently in Federal custody, and have Lieutenant Tao to examine the casings and bullets involved, finally a list of those Mr. DeLuca is to testify against. In Pope's office, it has been decided Brenda is to be given the specific information she desires regarding the case. Pope also has Flynn and Provenza take Martin DeLuca to a LAPD safehouse with Hecht. Brenda has forty-eight hours before DeLuca is to appear in Federal court; she is frantic how she will solve this case, expressing her angst to Pope. He says solve the case, please.
The safehouse meal is served, but Marty is not hungry, instead he steps outside after offering advice to Hecht about locking up Dellamonte. On the patio with Provenza, the safehouse conversation has the Lieutenant listening to Marty speak about the old mob days, loyalty being key to his speech. He can't believe someone took out his wife and is connected to his former employer; he blames the son, Joseph Dellamonte.
Brenda questions the young Dellamonte while his attorney Goodman and Agent Howard are present; accusations are prevalent throughout the room, Dellamonte claiming DeLuca is a dinosaur, not in touch with how the business works today. Brenda slaps Tom Cali's picture down in front of Dellamonte, declaring he is the man DeLuca says shot his wife, but Joseph denies any association, however, he says it is heard he was hanging out with Agent Hecht, although he has not been seen recently; Agent Howard looks up at the remark.
Goodman takes a call, Brenda admonishes him, he in turn says it's for you. She talks to Lieutenant Tao; he is looking at the phone dumps of all the people who knew where the DeLuca's were being held. He got the number from Agent Hecht's cell records and Hecht was also talking to Tom Cali, the hitman DeLuca thought he saw. Brenda warns attorney Goodman, there is a line between a vigorous defense and a criminal conspiracy, and if I find out you've crossed it; she storms out of the interview room.
At the safehouse, Lt. Flynn asks Hecht about the Crown Royal bag on their table. He explains Marty steered me on to it, keeping his gun in it when off duty; it protects the weapon from moisture. Flynn takes a call from Chief Johnson, he leaves the room, summoning Hecht to bring some dishes to the kitchen. Hecht walks in the kitchen, Flynn holds his gun to Tim's head, cuffs him; summons Provenza. Hecht is detained and somehow connected to the murders based on phone records.
At HQ, Provenza puts his weapon in the Crown Royal bag in front of DeLuca, while Flynn invites them to the police gym to be away from Hecht; he puts the weapon in his top drawer. Tao shows Brenda the gun that killed the FBI agent and Mrs. DeLuca; it has features unique to its original design, i.e. custom grips and shaved hammer. Brenda asks Tao to look inside the gun for other prints. Fritz informs Brenda, Agent Hecht flew into Flagstaff two weeks ago, stayed fourteen hours, then back to D.C. Gabriel says DeLuca did not touch base with Hecht when he was away; contact made when he came back to L.A. Brenda reviews aloud the known facts: Hecht flies to Flagstaff, does not check in with his witness, contacts Goodman and Cali on his cell phone, and leaves the safehouse ten minutes after the security was shut off.
Brenda awaits Lt. Tao's news about the gun fingerprints with her earpiece as she heads in to interview Agent Hecht. Brenda explains to the agent she is just the intermediary; this is an FBI matter she is helping to clear. You knew where the DeLuca's were staying, you logged out ten minutes before the monitor system shut down. Did you not think you should have told your partner you were leaving? A theory has been proposed you feed Mr. DeLuca information, that he does not know all there is to know about the Dellamonte family; you are perjuring yourself. Hecht denies the allegations; Marty and I tell each other everything. Brenda asks about Tom Cali; Sanchez adds Marty picked Cali's picture out as the shooter after you told him he went missing. Agent Howard has learned you and Tom Cali were spending time together. Hecht says Cali has nothing to do with this. Have you seen him? No.
Why did you go to Flagstaff and stay there for fourteen hours? Michelle DeLuca had to go there to visit a doctor for a female thing. The FBI is required to screen all professional visits such as the doctor visit. Mr. DeLuca is not lying when he said he didn't see me. Brenda pointedly comments, and I thought you told Mr. DeLuca everything. Just one more bit of business here, she opens a folder showing Hecht his cell phone records, listing several phone made to Tom Cali. Three days ago, you contacted Mr. Goodman, Joseph Dellamonte's attorney, and I was wondering if you wanted to share with me what you and Ronald Goodman discussed. I am not going to answer that; any more questions, I am invoking my right to counsel. Brenda gets word from Buzz; Lt Tao has the results back. Detective Sanchez offers Dellamonte's lawyer as he has observed Hecht's interview.
Tao says the print belongs to Lawrence Moran, a paid sniper for the government, honorably discharged after the first gulf war, according to Fritz; he is now a gun dealer, per his web site calendar. If Agent Howard knows Moran, then it is likely Hecht does too. Moran could have sold Tom Cali the weapon used in the killings. Commander Taylor works to get Moran for questioning from the San Diego PD.
Fritz and Brenda are heading home to check on Kitty with a picture being sent to make some missing-cat posters. Detective Daniels interrupts the two at the elevator, providing results from the morgue, Michelle DeLuca had an abortion while in Flagstaff, not losing the baby like was indicated prior to her death. Kitty returns just as posters are being prepared by Fritz. He mentions they don't really know what Kitty does when they are not home, while Brenda has the epiphany-look about her. Gabriel calls, Fritz picks up, learning Moran is expected that evening at HQ.
A subsequent search of Moran's vehicle uncovers an automatic weapon inside. Brenda requests Agent Hecht be interviewed in front of DeLuca, asking Gabriel to see it is made possible while she goes in to talk to Moran with Fritz. Moran admits he sold guns like the one Brenda holds, but he does not have the names available. Brenda explains she does not have time for Moran to produce his sold-to-list via a lineup recognition. Instead, Brenda thinks she can solve this issue with a handshake. She has Buzz ready his camera in the murder room in preparation for a handshake between DeLuca and Moran.
DeLuca walks into Brenda's conference room asking Hecht if any of this is true; he sits. Hecht, Sergeant Gabriel, Agent Howard, Chief Pope and Commander Taylor are all present. Brenda asks DeLuca if he knew his wife had an abortion; he admits she confided in him concerning the procedure, but after the fact. Brenda continues asking DeLuca if the procedure Michelle went through would have to be screened by Agent Hecht. DeLuca agrees, the FBI requires overseeing all professionals with protected witnesses. DeLuca believes Hecht came to Flagstaff just before he was in L.A. Brenda tells DeLuca, Agent Hecht was in Flagstaff two weeks ago to see Michelle DeLuca. Marty didn't know about the event then; he questions Hecht if it was true. Hecht tells Marty, she was going to have the abortion anyway. DeLuca stands, screaming at Hecht for his actions behind his back, yelling, he will do nothing for him going forward, they are through, never again. Brenda excuses Marty; she continues grilling Hecht.
Gabriel has Marty sit next to Provenza; he is visibly rattled with the previous conversation in Brenda's office with Hecht as he tells the Lieutenant he can't talk right now. Sanchez leaves to get Moran while Brenda grills Hecht.
Brenda turns her questioning to Hecht with Taylor, Pope and Howard present. Did you tell Mr. DeLuca you were trying to turn Mr. Cali against the Dellamonte family? Did you ask his advice or report on your progress? Did you inform Mr. DeLuca that Tom Cali had gone missing and was presumed dead? If you did, then if would explain why Mr. DeLuca would identify Tom Cali as the killer. Is it possible you loaned Mr. DeLuca your cell phone during that time? Pope asks Tim to answer the question. Who watches the DeLuca's when you are not around, Tim? Where is Martin DeLuca when your back is turned? Could he drive out of state, purchase that weapon, drive back. Martin DeLuca could stage the crime scene while you turn your back, putting his wife in the front seat, shoot her and your fellow agent, framing you? All because you want to put a mob family in prison? Sir, I believe your have lost your perspective. Hecht responds, Marty couldn't have killed Michelle, he loved her. Brenda retorts, Marty's way of thinking consisted of a confused set of values perhaps, but he was not about to allow an abortion. He thinks Michelle killed her child. Now you have lost his respect and he is never going to testify. Brenda demands Hecht stop protecting DeLuca and start telling the truth, now you are the witness, she tells him. He comes back with, that is a good story, but in a courtroom, you are going to need more evidence, and you don't have any. Brenda counters, oh yes I do, he is coming into my squad room right now.
Moran enters the murder room, tapping DeLuca on the shoulder, saying sorry to meet up with you again Buddy, but it was you or me. Hecht followed by Brenda exit the room, Hecht eyes Moran with DeLuca, telling Marty don't listen to him, it's a trap. Brenda declares, Mr. DeLuca, I see you have met Mr. Moran again. Hecht yells at Marty, don't say anything until I get you a lawyer. Provenza says what's this all about? Marty looks at Moran, then Hecht, saying you killed my child. DeLuca reaches for Provenza's gun in the drawer, fires two shots at Agent Hecht, killing him, then fires more rounds including the glass to Brenda's office, while clutching Provenza, using him as a shield. Marty turns to exit the murder room, his back turned to the group, Provenza remaining in his grasp. Sanchez says hey Marty, pointing his weapon at DeLuca, firing shots into him, knocking him down, demanding he drop his weapon. When he tries to fire it again, while on his back, Sanchez unloads more shots into Marty DeLuca, definitely killing him and releasing Provenza. The Lieutenant acknowledges his gratitude to Sanchez for saving him. The squad looks shocked as Hecht and DeLuca lie dead on the floor, Taylor is calling for emergency help, Agent Howard is checking Agent Hecht for vitals.
