In the HBO series "House of the Dragon, actor Matt Smith plays Prince Daemon Targaryen, a character who will -- should "Dragon" last long enough -- no doubt commit multiple acts of murder, perhaps a few acts of torture, certainly several acts of incest, and, just for good measure, two separate acts of enthused cannibalism. Probably also tax evasion. This postulation is based merely on how lascivious and gnarly the show's predecessor, "Game of Thrones," was throughout its 2011 through 2019 run.
Smith's screen acting career began in 2006 with his appearance on a TV adaptation of Philip Pullman's novel "Ruby in the Smoke" and its sequel "Shadow in the North." He was a regular character on the BBC Two series "Party Animals" before landing the plum gig of The Doctor in "Doctor Who" in 2010. The Doctor, for neophytes, is a near-immortal space alien who can, upon his death, choose to regenerate into a new body.

Looking for good books about the movies to read? We've got a bumper selection of recommendations right here...
A confession. I actually started writing this article in 2013, and the reason you've only reading it now is that I've made sure I've read every book on this list, save for one or two where I've marked otherwise. As such, what you're getting is a very personal list of recommendations. Each of these books has at least something to it that I think is of interest to someone wanting to learn more about film - or just enjoy stories of movie making.
I've tended to avoid picture books, with one exception, as these ones I've chosen are all intended to be chock-full of words, to relax with at the end of a long day. Which is what I did. There are one or two notable omissions, as I'm still...

Who let these animals in the house?! Every year, Lauren Conrad has the best handmade Halloween costume, and 2015 is no different. The Hills alum, 29, took to Instagram on Thursday, Oct. 22, to reveal what she and her friends are dressing up as, and this year, it's all about that forest life. "So excited to be a bunch of 'Party Animals' this Halloween!!" she wrote, captioning a photo of herself and three of her glammed-up friends (taken by Stephanie Todaro). The world of Doctor Who has changed greatly in the space of just 10 years. The cast and crew have almost completely been replaced since 2005, including a number of new actors to play the errant Time Lord and his companions.
But what has happened to the class of '05? Where are Rose and Mickey now? What is the writer of 'Dalek' up to? And where can you see more work from the director of 'Rose'?
Here it is then, your guide to the main players of Doctor Who series one.
The Cast
After his three-month on-screen stint as the Doctor, Christopher Eccleston's career continued in much the same vein, taking in theatre, interesting television roles and the odd blockbuster.
Post-2005, the Northern actor went Stateside to take on the role of invisible man Claude in the Us series Heroes. From there, he popped up in a very amusing Doctor Who-esque cameo as Dr.

Read the previous part in this series: the film careers of Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, here.
By 2009, the new version of Doctor Who had become not only an integral part of Saturday night television and a huge Christmas ratings winner but also an international success all over again. David Tennant, who had played the Time Lord since 2005 and was, arguably, more popular than any Doctor since the mighty Tom Baker hung up his scarf in 1981, had announced his resignation from the part he loved in October 2008. Many wondered how the incoming showrunner, Steven Moffat, would follow Tennant and what kind of show would emerge.
Tennant spent much of 2009 on stage in Hamlet and was only able to devote small amounts of time to Doctor Who. Occasional specials...

Sky and the producers of new drama series The Tunnel have defended the decision to adapt the critically acclaimed Scandinavian crime drama The Bridge.
Clémence Poésy and Stephen Dillane star in the Anglo-French twist on the Nordic Noir series, and the drama's chief exec Janet Featherstone insisted that fans of the original shouldn't be put off by the remake.
"I think the concept of Britain and France is particularly woven through and we've got key plot changes," said Featherstone, speaking at a Sky Drama launch.
"I won't tell you what the changes are because I don't want to spoil the drama, but there are plenty of changes and we've got many people who have seen both, who feel that they get satisfaction because the characters go on different journeys and the actors all bring a whole new level of interest in it.
"I honestly think if you watch it, you'll be surprised.

The Tunnel is the Franco-British adaptation of Scandinavian series The Bridge that’s gearing up for production next month. I’ve confirmed that Harry Potter actress Clémence Poésy and Game Of Thrones‘ Stephen Dillane have bagged the leads in what’s billed as the first-ever bilingual broadcast series for the UK and France. (UK site TVWise had the jump on the cast rumor.) The drama will be set primarily in Folkestone and Calais where detectives Karl Roebuck (Dillane) and Elise Wassermann (Poésy) are called to investigate the death of a French politician. When a shocking discovery is made at the crime scene, the pair is forced into an uneasy partnership as they seek out a politically-motivated serial killer who draws them into his own personal agenda. Ben Richards (Spooks, Outcasts, Party Animals) is heading up an Anglo-French writing team with broadcast planned for later this year. Sky Atlantic and Canal...

Critically acclaimed Scandinavian crime drama The Bridge is being reworked by Sky Atlantic with an Anglo-French twist. The new 10-part series is a co-production from Kudos Film and TV and Shine France Films and is being written by Ben Richards (Spooks, Outcasts, Party Animals). Renamed The Tunnel, the drama will have the backdrop of Europe in crisis and will centre on the death of a French politician, whose body is found on the border between the UK and France. Detectives Karl Roebuck and Elise Wassermann from their respective countries will form an uneasy partnership as they attempt to catch a serial killer, (more)...

Scandinavian format The Bridge is getting another adaptation, only this time it’s called The Tunnel. In what’s being billed as the first-ever bilingual broadcast series for the UK and France, Sky Atlantic HD and Canal Plus are co-producing the 10-part drama from Kudos Film and TV and Shine France Films in association with Filmlance. FX recently shot a pilot starring Demian Béchir and Diane Kruger for its own U.S. version of the Hans Rosenfeldt-created show which moved the action from the Danish-Swedish border to the boundary between the U.S. and Mexico. For The Tunnel, Ben Richards (Spooks, Outcasts, Party Animals) will lead an Anglo-French writing team to shift the story to the area where the UK meets France. Set primarily in Folkestone and Calais, the series seees detectives Karl Roebuck and Elise Wassermann called to investigate the death of a French politician on behalf of their respective countries.

But since then the air has seeped out of the Westminster bubble and not even the prospect of global economic collapse has succeeded in reflating public interest or screenwriters' conspiratorial imagination. Democracy is a flawed concept. Here are 50 films that the IMDb voters would unfairly have you believe are worth no more than 5.9/10…
Six out of ten isn’t a very good score, really. It’s barely over half marks. 60 per cent. It’s alright, but it’s not great. You wouldn’t be proud of getting six out of ten on most kinds of tests, would you? So you might assume that any film that scores under six stars out of ten on the IMDb isn’t very good – possibly even terrible.
But that’s not always the case. Averages don’t tell the whole story; anything that’s potentially controversial or divisive will end up with a score that suggests most people weren’t that bothered about it, since high and low scores will be averaged – and IMDb users often exaggerate their scores anyway, giving a film one star...

Outstanding in the Madonna-directed W.E., the Rada graduate may just be the best and brightest actor of her generation
Andrea Riseborough does not so much walk into a room as float through it; a fragrant, other-worldly presence who seems to appear out of nowhere like a shimmering will-o'-the-wisp. Her physical presence is slight – translucent skin and tiny, fine-boned fingers – and she gives the impression of operating on a different plane from the rest of us, as though earthly concerns are something of a mystery to her.
We are seated upstairs in the studio where the 30-year-old Riseborough has just finished the Observer photoshoot. On the table is a tray of baked apples. She peers at them detachedly, as though they are a strange piece of sculpture she cannot quite understand. Would she like one? "Oh no, I can't eat them," Riseborough says, smoothing down her floral tea dress. Why not?...

Mumbai, Jan 1: Party animals hit the most famous party spots right before midnight to bid farewell to the old year and ringed in the new year in style as others enjoyed last day of the year at their homes, watching television, and munching midnight snacks.
To ensure safe new year celebrations, the Mumbai police made tight security arrangements across the city. Special attention was paid to prevent eve-teasing and drunk driving accident.
According to police officials, over 25,000 policemen were on the streets maintaining strict vigil on new year's eve. Their presence was more visible at the localities that are infamous.

Rediscovered footage of Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters makes for an interesting documentary about a key moment in the history of the counter-culture
The prehistory of psychedelia gets an interesting, if minor footnote with this documentary co-directed by Alex Gibney – who made Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room. In 1964, bestselling writer and novelist Ken Kesey became a counter-cultural legend for a chaotic road trip he took across the United States in a rickety school bus, taking with him a bunch of "Merry Pranksters". They were keen on smoking dope and dropping acid and, among the group (and very dangerously at the wheel), was the jabberingly loquacious Neal Cassady, already immortalised in Kerouac's On the Road. The journey was recorded in a book by Tom Wolfe, but Kesey also shot hours and hours of amateur cine film – forgotten for decades – which this documentary reconstructs and edits into shape. From a young Margaret Thatcher to Wallis Simpson, Andrea Riseborough has managed to hide inside her roles. Is she ready for the fame Madonna will thrust upon her?
Andrea Riseborough in person is utterly unlike herself on screen. Even from film to film, Riseborough barely registers as the same person. In last year's remake of Brighton Rock she was timid and gawky, hidden behind National Health spectacles and long, mousy hair. In Made in Dagenham she was a mouthy, beehived cockney, while as the young Margaret Thatcher in TV drama The Long Walk to Finchley, she was faux-plummy and primly professional – and far sexier than most left-leaning viewers were comfortable with. Some actors have their own brand identity that is always flashing in the corner of the screen like a TV channel logo, whatever role they play; others can disappear to the extent we don't realise we've been watching them...

Andrea Riseborough, who co-starred in a pair of festival darlings last year, is poised to break out in a bigger feature alongside an A-list (or, actually, X-list) leading man. Riseborough, who had parts in both Made in Dagenham and Mark Romanek.s moody Never Let Me Go, has been cast opposite X-Men: First Class star James McAvoy in the British crime drama Welcome to the Punch, Variety is reporting. No word yet on who the actress would play, though we already know that McAvoy.s a detective forced to form what the trade calls .an unlikely union. with a criminal (played by the formidable Mark Strong of Green Lantern, Kick-Ass and Guy Ritchie.s Sherlock Holmes). No matter the part, this is a step up for Riseborough, a British actress who got her start on UK television . try and find the series Party Animals, where she played Kirsty MacKenzie . and...

A woman pushes one of her fellow workers into the acid tank where he burns and he later returns again, as his doppelganger. Rory (Arthur Darvill) plays darts with Amy (Karen Gillan) whilst the Doctor (Matt Smith) still attempts to get a fix on whether Amy is pregnant or not. He volunteers to drop them off for fish and chips, but Amy wants to be a part of whatever he's up to. So what was he up to on the sly, it couldn't really have been landing on that island as that was the result of the freak solar storm, or was it? A solar tsunami strands them on an island, housing a monastery. Doctor: "behold a cockerel, love a cockerel." Referring to the weather vane. Always have to have one of those around. Rory says it's not medieval as he can hear Dusty Springfield. Being the Doctor he can't resist nosing around.

From Margaret Thatcher to a Dagenham factory worker, Andrea Riseborough has earned a name for herself portraying headstrong women on stage and screen. But her next role will be the most challenging yet – Mrs Simpson, directed by Madonna
As a child, Andrea Riseborough spent a lot of time watching people. "I used to stare at them in restaurants, open-mouthed until my little brother said 'Er, Andrea, don't do that,'" she says, emitting a short burst of self-mocking laughter. She recalls being particularly in awe of the way her friend Chloe drank juice from her cup. "I used to think she was so cool, so exciting and so I copied the way she drank because I wanted to be closer to her. I don't know whether that's exploration or voyeurism or what that is."
Whatever it was, those formative experiences served her well in her chosen career as an actress.

The Beast Below has debuted in Australia to very respectable ratings. TV Tonight reports that the episode averaged 851,000 viewers in the five major capital cities, despite stiff competition from the commercial networks. Again it was the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's top-rating program of the day, rating higher than its popular Sunday 7pm news (By comparison, the mini-series Burn Up only rated 367,000 viewers for the ABC in the following 8.30pm timeslot). The corresponding Confidential Cutdown also rated a respectable 536,000 viewers in the five major capitals.

With a literal crash and a bang, Doctor Who returned to British TV screens tonight, in a first outing for, well, pretty much everyone involved with this series of Doctor Who, and what a triumphant first outing it was. The Doctor is new and looking younger, but its definitely the Doctor!
As this site is Us based, and the episode is two weeks away from airing, I'm going to try and review this first episode without spoiling anything about the story itself. It is going to be very hard, so please bare with me if this review seems in anyway disjointed.
The beauty of Doctor Who is that it forever changes, yet some how stays instantly familiar, and all of those ingredients have been mixed into the pot in an excellent first episode which had to balance the introduction of our new Doctor, companion, the world around her and the...

David Tennant's run as the tenth doctor is about to end. His three-series tenure will come to a close in January 2010, when the second part of "The End of Time" airs. However, fear not, you'll only have to wait a few more days for part one of the two-part finale, which will air on Christmas day in Britain, and a day later in America (the shortest delay between the UK and Us airings of the show yet). The second part will air in Britain on January 1, 2010, with an as-yet unknown airdate in the U.S.
The episode will also mark the end of Russel T. Davies' time on the show. Davies, who resurrected the series and wrote many, many episodes of the four seasons thus far, will be leaving the show after this episode. The changeover will be complete with the appearance of a new doctor. The eleventh doctor,...

Production began today in Cardiff on the fifth season of British sci-fi series Doctor Who, which sees the mantle of the Doctor taken over by Matt Smith (Party Animals) and the role of lead writer/executive producer taken over by Steven Moffat, who previously wrote such celebrated Who installments as "Blink" and "The Empty Child," among others. The Eleventh Doctor will be joined on his adventures through time and space by companion Amy Pond, played by newcomer Karen Gillan, whom he'll meet in the first episode of Season Five. "I feel very privileged and proud to be part of this iconic show," said Smith. Typically, the press cannot get enough of Doctor Who, and just when we thought we were going to get quiet year, the papers have two of them to talk about! Matt Smith's rise to the helm of the Tardis has been largely attributed to his audition - however Party Animals co-star Andrew Buchan reckons it is pretty much down to Smith's hair. "It's a sublime bit of casting. He's got that huge hair, a twinkle in his eye - Matt's the king of geek chic. He is possibly going to be one of the best...

He also played a political researcher in Party Animals for the BBC.At only 26, the Eleventh Doctor is the youngest ever, beating previous youngling Peter Davison by more than 3 years."It was abundantly clear that he had that 'Doctor-ness' about him," said BBC Wales Head of Drama Piers Wenger. "You are either the Doctor or you are not. It's just the beginning of the journey for Matt.

London -- The BBC has picked virtual unknown Matt Smith to be the new latest incarnation of intergalactic time traveler Doctor Who, it was announced on a one-off broadcast Saturday night.
Smith, 26, will be the youngest actor ever to take the role and will appear on screens in 2010, replacing David Tennant, who will sign off as the Time Lord at the end of this year.
Smith was picked out of a field thought to include such leading talent as John Simm and David Morrissey. He has earned critical acclaim for TV work, including the BBC political series "Party Animals," and stage appearances in "The History Boys."
"Doctor Who" executive producer and lead writer Steven Moffat said Smith had a completely new take on the Doctor.
"As soon as Matt walked through the door, and blew us away with a bold and brand new take on the Time Lord, we knew we had our man.
