David Auburn spent about two years writing his new play, “The Columnist,” the longest writing process he’s ever experienced on a project. But it started out as just curiosity in the Vietnam War.
“I basically knew nothing about this part of our history and I wanted to learn about it,” Auburn said. “So I started reading a lot, and the name, Joe Alsop, pops up in histories of Vietnam.”

With the Harry Potter series at an end and The Twilight Saga on its way out as well after this November's finale, I suppose now is as good a time as any to introduce a new project that combines the elements of both. Last year, Warner Bros. picked up the movie rights to Deborah Harkness' novel A Discovery of Witches, and now the studio is taking its first big step forward by bringing Proof writer David Auburn on to pen the adaptation. More details after the jump. First published in February 2011, A Discovery of Witches center around a young scholar and reluctant witch named Diana Bishop who's descended from the first victim of the Salem Witch Trials. When she stumbles across an enchanted manuscript, she finds herself at the center of a centuries-long grudge between vampires, witches, and daemons. Naturally, a handsome vampire love interest is involved as well.

Deborah Harkness' A Discovery of Witches is being adapted for the big screen. Variety reports that Warner Bros. has hired David Auburn to write the screenplay. Auburn wrote the play Proof, the movie The Lake House, and wrote and directed 2007's The Girl in the Park.
This is the first book of the "All Souls" Trilogy. The second book, Shadow of Night, is being released this summer. Here is a description of the book: When historian Diana Bishop opens a bewitched alchemical manuscript in Oxford’s Bodleian Library it represents an unwelcome intrusion of magic into her carefully ordinary life. Though descended from a long line of witches, she is determined to remain untouched by her family’s legacy. She banishes the manuscript to the stacks, but Diana finds it impossible to hold the world of magic at bay any longer.
For witches are not the only otherworldly creatures living alongside humans.

Kate Bosworth has a fan for life in Sigourney Weaver after impressing the veteran actress by adopting a stray Moroccan dog.
Kind-hearted Bosworth - who co-stars with Weaver in upcoming movie The Girl In The Park - found her beloved pooch Lila in the North African country and decided to bring her back to Los Angeles.
Weaver says, "She found that dog in Morocco. When someone rescues a dog from a desert and takes it back to L.A. and makes that animal's life work on these new terms, you already know an awful lot about that person."...

Alanis Morissette has joined the cast of novelist Philip K. Dick's semiautobiograhical feature adaptation Radio Free Albemuth.
In writer-director John Alan Simon's film, Morissette plays Sylvia, a woman who shows up in the vision of a record label executive named Nick (Jonathan Scarfe) as a glamorous singer.
In reality, she's an ordinary woman in unexpected remission from lymphoma who, after appearing in Nick's visions, gets a job as his secretary. She becomes his soul mate thanks to the pair's shared spirituality and visions.
"I am a big fan of Philip K. Dick's poetic and expansively imaginative books," Morissette said. "I feel blessed to portray Sylvia, and to be part of this story being told in film."
Shea Whigham (Wristcutters: A Love Story), Katheryn Winnick (Failure to Launch) and Hanna Hall (2007's Halloween) also star. Simon and his Discovery Prods. are producing with Dale Rosenbloom and his Open Pictures (The Girl in The Park) and Rhino Films' Stephen Nemeth (Dogtown and Z-Boys).
Dick's 1976 novel, published posthumously in 1985, is loosely based on his own experience with visions in the mid-'70s.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore's Media Development Authority opened a week of media business and conferencing activity here Monday by announcing the establishment of the country's first Film Production Loan Guarantee Facility.
The announcement came on the eve of today's opening of the Media Financing Forum and Wednesday's annual regional TV programming market, the Asia Television Forum, together with the Asia Film Market and Conference.
The LGF facility is the outcome of a collaboration between the MDA and RGM Holdings, a talent management, executive production and media financing company. It is designed to involve local producers in the production of international films, the two companies said at a press briefing in Singapore.
The facility will be used "as a catalyst to partially finance at least six international films" with a total budget of $52 million, the companies said. RGM, which will invest in as well as executive produce the films, will retain all rights.
The first two international films to be partly financed by the LGF are The Girl in the Park (starring Kate Bosworth and Sigourney Weaver) and Pushing Up Daisies (starring Rose Byrne and Jay Baruchel).
