Capturng Raul
ccthemovieman-129 September 2007
"All right, Raul's on the run with a big truck and a big bomb." Those frightening words from Jonas "Snake Dog" Blane at the 17-minute mark of this episode tell you what he and his guys' mission is in this episode, the fourth straight excellent one to begin this second season of "The Unit."

"Snake Dog," is in El Cajon, Mexico, which is near the California border. They are watching some bad guys and trying to intercept a package they have. After a big firefight, it's discovered those guys weren't bringing in something. Instead, they were bringing in someone - "Raul," an international terrorist from Indonesia, the world's deadliest munitions expert - and he got away and is heading to California.

Meanwhile, in the secondary story back at the base, Kim's boss needs a quick interview to fill in some dead air time and hooks her into it, in which she makes a few comments about it being a tough life in the military. She then goes to pick up her daughter at school and sees the girl talking to someone, who drives off. The girl tells her mom it is a teacher, a "Mr. Marlantes." Back home, talking to the other wives, Kim finds out there is no "Mr. Marlantes" at the school. Who was this guy talking to her girl and what does he - or someone else - want?

Without spoiling anything, the endings to these two stories wound up surprising to me, in that the "action" story wound up a little too unbelievable and the "domestic" very clever.

Warning: Spoilers
The mission starts out in Mexico with Jonas, Bob, Mack, and Charles chasing after a package. Eventually, they are led back through the border underground chasing the package that turns out to be a person who is a Terrorist, wanted from the U.S. all the way to East Africa. Meanwhile, problems occur at home when Kim sees her daughter talking to a stranger. She consults the other Unit Members Wives. Afterwards, Jonas and the others continue to pursue the terrorist, they discover that he plans to blow up something using military-grade fertilizer. They are eventually led to a supply store, where a man who is a racist, is helping the terrorist. Back at the base, Kim tries every way to protect her daughter from strangers, she puts out a broadcast all over the base for this stranger and his vehicle. She gets a lead and asks Unit Member Hector to track him. Back with the other Unit Members, they interrogate the racist man and they track the terrorist to this man's house. The terrorist happens to be engaged to this man's daughter and they are led to a small railroad bridge. Under that bridge are the explosives but the switch is that the train is carrying a nuclear device. If the nuclear device is set off they say it would contaminate the entire West Coast of the United States. Back at the base, Hector finds the stranger and finds out that the stranger is working for Colonel Tom Ryan. When Hector tells Kim she has nothing to worry about, she argues about it and goes to Colonel Ryan. Before she does, the boys back in the West try to deactivate the bomb any way they can but all attempts fail. Even the girl that the terrorist is engaged to is killed in the process. They find out that the bomb can't be deactivated and they detonate it before the train reaches the bridge. The train stops in time to avoid derailing. Back at home, Kim speaks with the good Colonel Ryan and finds out that the stranger was there to find out if he could retreive information from anyone. He doesn't want another incident on his base like the one that happened at his wedding reception. So finally, all is good in the world, at least for them for a brief period of time. If you ask me, this one was pretty good.
