Actress Michelle Yeoh is set to receive the 15th annual Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film from the Santa Barbara Film Festival. The award, which benefits the festival’s year-round educational programs, will be presented to the Everything Everywhere All At Once star at a black-tie dinner taking place at the Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Santa Barbara on Friday, December 9. This will mark the first time the honor is awarded since the passing of the screen legend that gives the prize its name.
“A well-deserved honor for the legendary and multi-talented Michelle Yeoh,” said the late Kirk Douglas’ son, actor Michael Douglas. “She has been entertaining and thrilling us in films since the 1980s …… And she does her own stunts!! Bravo Michelle!”
Yeoh is an internationally recognized, Malaysian-born actress who rose to fame in 1990s Hong Kong action films before going on to shatter convention and star in a myriad of globally acclaimed blockbusters.

Based on what we’re hearing from Disney, the seventh and final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, now on Disney Plus, will be with us on February 17th, 2020. One of the more challenging aspects of the animated series, though, is that you won’t get a chronological experience by just following the released episode order. Thankfully, then, we now have a correct viewing order courtesy of the official Star Wars site, which tells us all you need to know to catch up on The Clone Wars before its return.
The Clone Wars bridges the gap between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, providing a significant level of detail for anyone wondering what was going on in between the two prequel movies. When aired, episodes could often be bundled together as arcs, linked by one-off episodes that might explore a different part of the galaxy adjacent...

We don’t have long to wait for the final two parts of The CW’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” event, which will wrap up on January 14th. Joining synopses already available for the final episodes, as well as some teasers, we’ve now received a range of stills showing the remaining heroes of the DC Multiverse fighting the Anti-Monitor. And based on the images from the fourth part of the arc, which you can see below, things aren’t going particularly well for our characters.
The images are familiar for anyone who’s already watched the latest teaser for “Crisis,” available above, including the Arrowverse heroes facing the Anti-Monitor in what appears to be an industrial wasteland. Whether or not this is part of the Vanishing Point the characters escaped to at the end of Part Three of the event is unclear. The images do show that Barry Allen...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part Three,” “The Flash” episode of the 2019 “Arrowverse” crossover.
Tuesday night was the official midpoint of the ambitious “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossovers, with an episode of “The Flash” that also marked the final episode of the year for the DC series. As such, it was as full of Easter eggs, plot twists, and a whole lot of… well, crisis.
But first a special cameo, this time by Ashley Scott as “Birds of Prey’s” Huntress. She barely had time to appear on-screen before New Gotham and the rest of Earth-203 blew to smithereens, marking another Earth obliterated by Anti-Monitor and the anti-matter smashing through the universe at record speed. I don’t know who will win The Masked Singer‘s second season, but this week’s episode really cements which contestant I’d like to win. I’ll give you a hint: She’s green, smells pine-fresh and man, does she have balls.

Apex Legends continues to prove its staying power in a crowded genre dominated by Fortnite.
Despite getting off to a rocky start nine months ago, Respawn has been quick to act on remedying several major issues raised by early adopters of the battle royale. The near-total eradication of cheaters, more streamlined (and frequent) content delivery and, of course, new cosmetics have poured into Kings Canyon on the regular since the implementation of the popular seasonal model found in its contemporaries.
The result is a well-rounded title that now sits just below Epic Games’ market leader and, by the looks of it, boasts a degree of popularity that shows no signs of tapering off. That’s the picture that recent figures released by SuperData seem to suggest, at least.

Ryan Destiny, who’s best known for her role in Fox’s “Star,” will play Claressa “T-Rex” Shields in Universal’s biopic “Flint Strong.”
The film marks Destiny’s first starring role in a major studio movie after her breakout role in the Lee Daniels series.
Based on Zackary Canepari and Drea Cooper’s 2015 boxing documentary “T-Rex,” the story follows 17-year-old Shields, a Flint, Mich., native whose dreams of becoming the first woman in history to win an Olympic gold medal in boxing are realized at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. The studio acquired Shields’ life rights and rights to the documentary in 2016.

When Todd Banhazl received writer-director Lorene Scarfaria’s script for “Hustlers,” he knew immediately he had to be its cinematographer.
“I just fell in love with it for the same reasons I think audiences are connecting to it. I just couldn’t believe that someone had written this and wants to make this movie. I just knew that I had to make it,” Banhazl told Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Cinematography panel, moderated by this writer (watch above). “When we met, we hugged. I felt like I had the job within five minutes.”
Based on the “New York” magazine article “The Hustlers at Scores,” the film tells the true story of a group of strippers who, after the 2008 financial crisis, decides to swindle their Wall Street clients by drugging them and ringing up their credit cards. It’s a gritty, glamorous crime drama with an unlikely group of...

Marvel’s Avengers fans eager to learn more of the action-adventure title’s gameplay systems are in for a treat today, thanks to the release of a fresh new trailer.
Over the last several weeks, developer Crystal Dynamics has been gradually providing details on how character gear, upgrades and player progression will work in its superpowered world, but only now, do we have access to a proper demonstration. Equipment interfaces, skill trees and cosmetic skins are all addressed and neatly explained with accompanying gameplay in the trailer which, without further ado, you can watch above.
Somewhat unsurprisingly, given the obvious similarity in descriptions provided by the studio previously, Marvel’s Avengers‘ various RPG elements immediately draw comparisons with Bungie’s looter shooter Destiny series. Each individual piece of gear is color-coded by rarity and has its own gear score which, when added to a hero’s total, denotes their overall power.

Chinese romantic drama, “Somewhere Winter” is set to release in North America next month following a deal between China Lion Film Distribution and Tencent Pictures.
China Lion will release the film day-and-date in the U.S. and Canada simultaneously with the Chinese Mainland release of Nov. 15, as well as in Australia & New Zealand. In other territories, rights are handled by Hong Kong-based sales agency Distribution Workshop.
Directed by David Wang Weiming (“Sex Appeal”), “Winter” stars Ma Sichun and Wallace Huo (“Our Time Will Come”), in a love story about two generations and three cities. In The Outer Worlds, many of the best items are just sitting there and waiting for you. Finding them may prove to be a challenge, though.
From Destiny and The Division to the wonderful world of microtransactions, "looting" has become a driving gameplay element behind many popular titles. The most popular modern variation of the mechanic involves assigning an item a random drop rate. That approach encourages users to spend hours grinding for certain items and rewards them with the high of finally earning a particular piece. However, there are some who believe that such an approach adds a kind of cheap "gambling" mechanic to a game.
So does The Outer Worlds utilize a random looting element?
"We do have random loot tables that you'll draw from," says Brian Heins, senior designer on The Outer Worlds. "So, in some cases, you can get a really awesome weapon...

With this new project, the League of Legends team seem to be going after Blizzard's territory.
Among the many, many announcements that came from the recent League of Legends anniversary event comes an exciting rumor that Riot Games may be working on an action-rpg in the style of Diablo.
The game in question is currently only being referred to as Project F, and Riot only showcased it and talked about it briefly during their extended presentation regarding what's next for the studio. That very much seems to be intentional as you get the impression that this is the one Riot project that likely furthest away from being completed.
However, what little we did see of the game seems to strongly indicate that it will be an action-rpg. Riot hasn't confirmed that beyond any doubt, but if the initial information available regarding the project is an accurate representation of the final product,...

Both Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani were quick to press their “steal” buttons, with the Florida resident ultimately choosing to join Team Gwen. “You broke up America’s couple!” Blake told Destiny. Platforms: Xbo (reviewed), PS4, PC, Stadia
Developer: Bungie

Bungie’s first major Destiny 2 expansion since splitting with Activision feels like the original Destiny—in the best and worst of ways. Here are the armor stats of the first game, but with more customization. And here too is Eris Morn, the morose ex-Guardian whose fireteam was devastated by the Hive.
The studio continues to juggle how to keep the evolving world of Destiny 2 while adding more RPG elements to an already cluttered game. Fans looking for more customization and a return to the Vex-focused storyline of the Black Garden may enjoy the new armor and weapon offerings. Lore buffs have a lot to dig into from the very first mission of the campaign, which features...

House of X and Powers of X have concluded, so it's on to the future of the Marvel Universe, mutants, and the X-Men!
This article contains major spoilers for Marvel's X-Men reboot, House of X and Powers of X.
House of X and Powers of X are now complete, and the event, which was billed as a huge reset for the X-Men comics universe, did everything promised. It took a major retcon for one of its characters and used it to reposition the X-Men concept in the greater Marvel Universe, reinvigorating the mutant metaphor and seeding years of stories that changed the past, present and future of the entire world. The changes are dense, and can be confusing, so we picked through all 12 issues to figure out what you need to know heading into Dawn of X.

It sounds like the story of Marvel's Avengers will not be finished in the retail version of the game.
Rich Briggs, senior brand director for Marvel's Avengers developer Crystal Dynamics, recently spoke to Comicbook regarding the length of the upcoming game and the studio's long-term ambition for the project.
“We're not putting exact numbers on it just yet, but you can expect something comparable to what we've done in the past,” says Briggs. "If you think about previous Crystal games, you know that if you want to be playing your way through the core story, it's going to be in that area, 10 to 12 hours. But if you want to see everything there is, and do all the side missions and everything else, you're generally looking at 30 plus hours in the Tomb Raider games."

There was a lot for us fans of The Voice to process going into Night 6 of the Blind Auditions. First of all, Nick Jonas taking a seat as a Season 18 coach. Big thumbs-up to that, no? I like Gwen Stefani as an artist quite a lot, but as a coach, she leaves something to be desired. And a little bit of her cooing over her “Blake-y” goes a long way.
Second, John Legend’s reluctance to turn his damn chair Monday night. He didn’t swivel for seven contestants in a row, among them Joana Martinez, whose lower register still...

Marvel’s Avengers will be jam-packed with neat gameplay features when it launches next year but just how much of its superpowered experience can be customized? Billed, first and foremost, as an action-adventure, developer Crystal Dynamics clearly has no intention of making its most ambitious project to date a number-crunching RPG affair, but by no means is every players’ experience going to be a perfect mirror of each other.
In fact, there’s a great deal of meat on the bones of Marvel’s Avengers‘ customization options, certainly enough to justify repeated play. A hardcore RPG this isn’t, then, but increasingly popular systems such as skill trees, experience-based leveling and, of course, rare gear drops to obtain, will be the cause of most dopamine rushes beyond the story’s single-player conclusion and now, we finally have a clearer idea of how those features will complement core gameplay.

Actress Constance Wu was on a lookout for a "deeply lonely" character, and was glad she got to do it with "Hustlers".

"I had been looking to play a character who was deeply lonely, because of how our culture causes such loneliness," Wu said.
"We need stories about that. Destiny is so beautiful to me because of her solitude, and the ways she tried to pretend her way out of it seemed counter intuitive, but also so very human," she added.
There were many challenges awaiting the actors who portray the exotic dancers.

This is how a seductive heist crime drama can be such a memorable tribute to the incredible Martin Scorsese?s unforgettable Goodfellas and remain sexy and touchy till the very end. Jennifer Lopez stuns with a comeback that is worthy of top honors in the acting department at least.

Raids are coming to Mortal Kombat 11 as part of an exciting new update.
Mortal Kombat 11 is getting a very surprising co-op raid mode as part of the game's next patch.
How will that even work? Well, as revealed during the latest Kombat Kast, these raids will see three players team up to take on the same boss. Every player participating in the raid will fight the boss at the same time in what appears to be a 1v1 battle, but the boss' health bar will actually be shared across all three fights. All three participants will need to work together to whittle down the boss' health bar to zero before their shared pool of three lives runs out.
What's interesting about this mode is how it encourages teamwork. For instance, raiding fighters will be able to participate in challenges that either reward player buffs of boss debuffs upon successful completion.

Release Date: September 13, 2019
Platform: PC (reviewed), PS4, Xbox One, Stadia
Developer: Gearbox Software
Publisher: 2K Games
Genre: Action RPG
Being able to look back on who you were five years ago and feeling a little embarrassed is often a sign of growth. It’s good that you’re able to change over time and maybe even laugh a little bit at your past self. In terms of growth, Borderlands 3 isn’t quite the townie who sticks around to buy beer for high school kids and force them to listen to stories from “when they were cool,” but it definitely sneaks up to the attic to gaze longingly at its varsity jacket from time to time.
The Borderlands franchise hasn’t changed much since the release of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel five years ago.

In one of the very last scenes of Hustlers, Jennifer Lopez's Ramona sits across from a journalist, Elizabeth (Julia Stiles), explaining her part in the scam that effectively ended her stripping career. Ramona calls herself a people person and it's obviously true from the way she candidly shares her story with the other woman, pulling out the contents of her purse to show her the valuable trinkets she keeps with her at all times. She affectionately shows Elizabeth a baby photo of her former accomplice Destiny (Constance Wu), cooing over how precious she looks as a baby and wondering how anyone could ever abandon her. "I keep this so I always have her with me," she says, smiling down at the photo. And that, folks, is Hustlers.

In many respects, Hustlers isn’t just a good film — it’s also a groundbreaking one. Based on a 2015 New York magazine piece by Jessica Pressler, Hustlers tells the story of Destiny (Constance Wu), a struggling dancer at the fictional strip club Moves trying to work her way up the totem pole. She befriends single mother Ramona (Jennifer Lopez), a much more established dancer who takes her under her wing. When the recession hits, the two team up to scam their Wall Street banker patrons, enlisting the help of other club employees in the process.

Lorene Scafaria's Hustlers boasts a star-studded cast that gives us a rich story about savvy strippers, filthy-rich Wall Street guys who get scammed out of their company cards, and more. One character who's particularly essential to the story is a journalist named Elizabeth, played by Julia Stiles. Elizabeth's character is based on Jessica Pressler, the author behind the 2015 article published in New York Magazine that started it all.
Titled "The Hustlers at Scores," Pressler's article recounts the real-life hustle of Roselyn Keo and Samantha Barbash, two strip club employees who are fictionalized in the film as Dorothy/Destiny and Ramona Vega, played by Constance Wu and Jennifer Lopez, respectively. In tribute to its source, the film plays out the tale of the Robin Hood-esque con as Destiny is sitting down for an interview with Elizabeth, telling her how it all went down. A majority of the story is told using flashbacks,...

While the stripper drama Hustlers opened to rave reviews and a massive box office last weekend, one of the inspirations behind the hit film remains unimpressed.
The movie is based on a true story detailed in a 2015 New York Magazine article titled “The Hustlers at Scores,” about New York City strippers who drugged their wealthy clients in order to use their credit cards to run up large bills at the strip club.
The article focused primarily on Roselyn “Rosie” Keo and Samantha Barbash, who are played by Constance Wu and Jennifer Lopez, respectively, in the film. (Lorene Scafaria, the director of the film,...

Truth is stranger than fiction...or is it? Based on journalist Jessica Pressler's December 2015 story for The Cut titled The Hustlers at Scores, Hustlers tells the story of the four exotic dancers, led by Jennifer Lopez's Ramona and Constance Wu's Destiny, who conned at least four men out of over $200,000 by drugging them in 2014. Released on Friday, the highly anticipated film over-performed at the box office, bringing in $34 million, as movie-goers learned the harsh truth about the culture of strip clubs while also gasping over J.Lo's impressive pole-dancing skills/abs. Of course, there were some changes that had to be made by Lorene Scafaria when she was taking the...

Chicago – This striper crime caper is flashy, buffed to a high gloss, and more entertaining and watchable than it has any right to be. She’s just doing it to help take care of her grandma but finds that working the poll alone won’t pay the bills. At the New York Club modeled after the manhattan nightspot Scores, queen bee Jennifer Lopez takes her under her wing to show her the moves. This film is a sisterhood tale wrapped up in larceny and dollar bills. Lopez gets a meaty role tailor-made to her like a sequined bodysuit. It starts with Lopez showing Wu how to get into the VIP champagne room and milk the marks for all their worth.

All that glitters is gold in Hustlers.
You won’t find a greater paradox at the theater in 2019: a movie where strippers are shown as human, breaking the rules seems right and finally, a movie with Jennifer Lopez that isn’t wasting her talents. Hustlers is all that and more.
Not only will you get an educational lesson on moves like “The Peter Pan” and “The Fireman,” but you’ll also be taught a lesson in selflessness, girl power and the power of friendship. That’s where Destiny comes in – both fate and the stripper of the same name. She’s a loner. More than that, she’s a loner with no friends, no steady job and a grandma who needs caring for. So, I guess stripping is the answer?
Okay, so these characters don’t always make the best decisions, but money is money. And before the stock...

Jennifer Lopez is earning rave reviews for her performance in Hustlers — but the real-life story behind the acclaimed movie about strippers getting back at their Wall Street clients isn’t so bright.
The movie, inspired by Jessica Pressler’s 2015 New York Magazine article “The Hustlers at Scores,” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday and is now playing in theaters.
The film also stars Constance Wu, Cardi B, Lizzo, Keke Palmer, Lili Reinhart and Julia Stiles. Lopez, 50, shines as Ramona, the owner of a successful strip club who cooks up a way of getting even richer.

So, are movie audiences ready for another flick about good looking women being very, very bad? Well, not as bad say as the ladies of The Kitchen. Nobody’s getting whacked or having their legs broken. The dudes in this romp do wake up with some major hangovers (physical and financial). Now don’t get this confused with this past Summer’s similarly-titled The Hustle. This new flick has no wacky slapstick hi-jinks. And it’s based an original story, a magazine article, while the former was a remake…of a remake, showing us that “third time’ was definitely not “the charm”. And instead of the swanky hotels and casinos on the French Rivera, we see the inner working of an NYC “high-end” “gentleman’s club”. The “entertainers’ that work there desperately want to leave the “life”. But they’ve got to be more than “classy exotic dancers’, these ladies have to be Hustlers.

“This city, this whole country, is a strip club. You’ve got people tossing the money, and people doing the dance” utters Ramona, as a justification for her shady actions in Lorene Scafaria’s impressive new true crime drama Hustlers.

An energetic entry in a current wave of what might be called Income Inequality Cinema — where the screwed-over working class fights for their piece of the 0.1% pie — “Hustlers” is an uneven but mostly entertaining tale of strippers exploiting their exploiters.
Based on Jessica Pressler’s New York magazine article about performers at New York City’s legendary Scores nightclub, the film represents a step up for director Lorene Scafaria, whose previous two theatrical features (“The Meddler” and “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World”) were well-cast but emotionally unsatisfying.
And whereas “The Meddler” seemed to love gleaming surfaces for their own sake (the film often resembled an advertisement for The Grove shopping center in L.A.), “Hustlers” cinematographer Todd Banhazi (Janelle Monáe’s “Dirty Computer”) cannily intersperses the neon fantasy of the strip club and the magazine-spread sheen of upscale Manhattan apartments with a jolt of naturalist light...

Early in Hustlers, there is a crystallizing moment where student meets teacher for the first time. While Constance Wu’s Destiny and Jennifer Lopez’s Ramona have technically shared the screen before now, this is the scene where the new girl sees the nightclub’s reigning queen bee as a potential friend and likely mentor. It’s also the first time in ages audiences have glimpsed Jennifer Lopez, the terrific actor, instead of the movie star.
Wrapped in a mink on a wintry Manhattan night, and sitting atop the roof above her glossy dominion, Ramona invites the freezing Destiny into her furs and the audience into the warmth of this movie’s deceptively breezy folds. In an idealized world,...

Lorene Scafaria recently appeared on BuzzFeed News’ “Am to Dm” web show and called out the headlines around pertaining to “Hustlers” co-stars Jennifer Lopez and Constance Wu feuding on set. Page Six reported over the summer that Wu was a “difficult diva” on the “Hustlers” set, much to the annoyance of her co-stars. The “Fresh of the Boat” actress was reportedly furious that Jennifer Lopez was getting billing over her because Wu plays the lead character. Scafaria told Buzzfeed that not only are the feud rumors untrue, they are also personally insulting.
“Honestly when I heard about it, it was such an insult to my set, because I don’t run things like that,” Scafaria said. “I love to work with actors of all kinds who need different things, but everybody got along so great on this. Jennifer and Constance really did have that chemistry and that relationship right away.

Magic Mike flipped the script a bit a few years ago and now we have Hustlers, which empowers strippers in a way that cinema has never seen before. In showcasing a determined group of women rebelling against not just toxic masculinity, but the elite as well, this is poised to be one of the surprise hits of 2019. The film is based on a true story, specifically a New York Magazine article that went viral a handful of years ago. We are first introduced to Destiny (Constance Wu), a...
