Fine example of Malayalam Cinema
arjunraju19 January 2007
As I write this review i am sitting here with the excitement of having viewed two great films in one day.One is Hotel Rwanda and the other Kaiyoppu.People, this is one fine piece of work and i highly recommend you see it soon. The film tells the story of a writer, rather a wannabe writer,Balachandran who has written a manuscript that becomes the talk among literary circles. The problem is that he is a few pages away from completing it when he is struck with writer's block.Enter Shivdas,A small time publisher who upon reading the manuscript,is so excited by it that he hounds him to complete it.As the story progresses we join Balachandran as he attempts to finish his work.Several characters enter the foray, in the form of an old flame, the lodge owner,a sick child and Balachandran's uncle.By the end you find yourself rooting for the characters and actually hoping that everything turns out well.

Mammooty excels once again and the other actors especially the guy playing Firoz Babu are commendable. The dialog is wonderful and quite a many were received with a hand by the audience. The script is beautifully written and some scenes have stunning visuals. The picturisation of the only song, jalte Hain Jiske liye, an old Hindi song, is beautifully done.

This film is gonna sit well with all types of audience and i am sure it will be well received by all.I cant wait to get familiar with director Renjith's other work.

Simplicity turned into a memorable movie

Few people are as skilled as Renjith. Kayyoppu is a true master piece from Renjith. A simple story made so fine and with so much depth, leaves you with a strong connect for Balanchandran (Mammooty).

The story is about Balachandran who is a writer working on a story. The few who have read his drafts excepts the book to become a runaway success. He is having trouble finishing his book when he runs into Mukesh who is running a small time publishing house. Khushboo plays Balanchandrans friend from college who is still in awe of him. Their conversations are really good to listen. In fact the whole language and style of conversation in the movie is what takes the movie to a different level.

Balanchandrans non interest for worldly pleasures or money, wanting to help people in need, etc gives him a classical hero touch. But his struggles as a writer clearly stands out.

With strong acting all around, this movie can be watched over n over again. Film making at its best.

Brilliantly Narrated, Visually Stunning, Great performances!

I've seen some really good Malayalam movies in the recent years but so far, this maybe the best. Kaiyoppu is incredibly captivating and rich in interesting and colorful characters.

Firstly, there's Mammootty himself and I will admit if any other actor had played Balachandran it might not be the movie it is, Mammootty is simply amazing, you forget who he is within the first five minutes. There are no punch dialogs like Prajapathi but you care about Balachandran a simpleton but an intellectual and as the narration progresses you want things to turn out OK for him as much as his friends do.

To sum it up the acting is strong, the narrative is compelling enough and its semi-documentary style direction by Renjith is consistent and provides clarity and pace with a brilliant background score.

I cannot say it enough: This is one of the best to come out of Malayalam in the recent years. Watch it, and you'll see.

Wow. This must be an award-movie.

Apparently, Mammootty did not take remuneration for this movie. The artistic or rather, eclectic trip of Kayyoppu is felt for those who have lived through emotions experienced by the protagonist. I for one, could relate to many plot points. Until the very end, it was a drama I was a familiar with, yet hooked me through and through. Would watch it on a rainy day after writing a poem!

A true writer's film don't need any big sets, glamour, action, melodrama to tell a Classic Story and Kaiyoppu is the Biggest Example of it.

Kaiyoppu (2005) : Brief Review -

A true writer's film don't need any big sets, glamour, action, melodrama to tell a Classic Story and Kaiyoppu is the Biggest Example of it. Kaiyoppu is a very intelligent film. It is not made for masses those who love action, glamour, romance and high drama in the film and moreover assumes that these are the only things any film can offer. This one is for urban classes, those who understand cinematic aspects and power of storytelling. This will please every critic mind because it is made from critic's point of view and it even mentions the same unknowingly. I am still not sure if it was a true story or not because when they showed the date and timing of the event in the climax, I was quite shocked to learn that it might be a true story but then i didn't even bother researching it. Let it be, it doesn't matter much to me now. I am more than happy with the overall product even if it's fictional. The movie tells the story about Balachandran, a person with passion for books and literature. He is that big-hearted guy we call a real human, he had his ambitions, dreams but never thought of crossing the line. Whether it was his love life or professional life, he stayed in limits but when it comes to generosity and helping others, he has no limits. What an intellectual character it was to adore. Like I said, this film is for classes so you know finding such intelligent character in a suitable storyline is a rare combo and we often complaint about not seeing it. Mammootty, on hearing the script, decided to act without any remuneration. My respects to this man for Living this Character on screen. That police station speech had me stunned for a moment and that's only because of his outstanding acting. In a nutshell, Ranjith has made a heartbreaking film with solid classy statements that we don't get to see often so please don't Miss this one at any cost.
