- Dr. Quest heads up the Amazon to the Land of the Turu in pursuit of high grade trinoxite, a new metal essential to the space program, unaware that "Turu" is a live pteranodon guarding the deposit.
- The Quest party travels up the Amazon looking for the location of high grade trinoxite ore. They run across a canoe containing one of the native brothers, Aku, who gave Dr. Quest his promising ore sample. Aku's brother had just been taken by the featherless giant bird called Turu. The wary Quests rent a boat and travel further upriver, past aggressive crocodiles, to find a mountain plateau where a living pteranodon resides. Strangely, it's also a pet controlled by a greedy, crippled slaver named Deen, who uses it to snatch natives for his "silver" mine (actually the trinoxite). Dr. Quest quickly decides to put a stop to them, and Deen wants them dead.—statmanjeff
- Dr Quest, doing research in the Amazon jungle, comes across two native brothers who have a sample of a rare mineral. Knowing that the mineral would be of immense value to the space program, he begins to prepare an expedition.
Before his expedition can depart, one of the brothers shows back up, unconcious, in his dugout canoe. He tells Dr. Quest's party that his brother was taken by Turu, and with a drawing in the sand and verbal descriptions, describes the impossible ... a prehistoric pteranodon!
Delving deep into the jungle for the source of the ore and the mysterious flying creature, Dr. Quest, Race Bannon, Jonny, and Hadji discover that the pteranodon is real, and is being controlled by a man who has been using it to kidnap natives to use as slaves in his mine, and to keep them in line.
Dr. Quest and Race must find a way to defeat the mighty Turu, free the slaves, and keep Turu from turning them into its next meal!
