Fox Searchlight has set an awards-friendly release date for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” Martin McDonagh’s follow-up to “Seven Psychopaths” starring Frances McDormand. The playwright-turned-filmmaker made his cinematic debut with “In Bruges,” which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. His latest is due in theaters on October 13, leaving plenty of time for the studio to make pushes for McDonagh and McDormand.

Here’s the synopsis: “‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ is a darkly comic drama from Academy Award winner Martin McDonagh (‘In Bruges’). After months have passed without a culprit in her daughter’s murder case, Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand) makes a bold move, painting three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at William Willoughby (Woody Harrelson), the town’s revered chief of police.

Update: Adam Driver has joined the cast and Seth MacFarlane is in talks, but Michael Shannon has dropped out due to his commitment on Guillermo del Toro‘s The Shape of Water, Deadline reports.
Steven Soderbergh never “left,” of course. He’s directed twenty episodes of give-or-take-one-hour television (The Knick) since the summer of 2014, helmed some sort of prestige-cable project (Mosaic) that may or may not be a movie, shot and edited Magic Mike Xxl, and has kept up the producing game, most notably with Starz’s widely acclaimed The Girlfriend Experience. Those who’ve wanted Soderbergh in the last few years haven’t been left wanting.
And yet his return to feature filmmaking has been desired all the while, and so this next bit of news is very exciting. (Especially if you, like I, don’t much care for The Knick — but that’s another discussion altogether.) After he...

Last week, I wrote about some rumored plot details for Guillermo del Toro's new Cold War-era romance film, reportedly called The Shape of Water. Here's the only official synopsis we have thus far:
An other-worldly love story, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1963. A mysterious and magical journey from master storyteller Guillermo del Toro.
But those rumored details paint a more detailed picture. Supposedly, the story follows a mute janitor named Elisa (Sally Hawkins) who falls for an amphibious man who's being kept at the lab where she works. She tries to break him out with the help of her neighbor (probably played by Richard Jenkins), but "the world outside of the lab, however, may prove to be more dangerous for the amphibious man than Elisa could have anticipated."
Now The Wrap reports that Oscar-nominated actor Michael Shannon is in talks to join the project,...

The intensity of Michael Shannon‘s onscreen presence and the overwhelming (sometimes too-overwhelming) authorial control wielded by Guillermo del Toro may very well be a match made in Heaven. We should soon have a sense of their compatibility: the latter is looking to cast the former in his Fox Searchlight-backed Cold War romance, supposedly titled The Shape of Water, which has secured Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer, and Richard Jenkins. [The Wrap]
Here’s the synopsis that came in last week:
We’re hearing that the fairytale, set in 1963, centers around Elisa (Hawkins), a mute janitor working at a lab where an amphibious man is being held captive. When Elisa falls in love with the creature, she devises a plan to help him escape with the assistance of her neighbor (Jenkins). The world outside of the lab, however, may prove to be more dangerous for the amphibious man than Elisa could have anticipated.

Back in March we learned that Guillermo del Toro is planning on directing a supernatural Cold War drama that has "an otherworldly love story at the center of it," and now thanks to The Tracking Board, we might know a little bit more about the film, including its title. The site is claiming that the movie is titled The Shape Of Water, and that the 1963-set fairytale centers around Elisa,... Read More...

Following up Crimson Peak, we recently learned that after many, many potential projects being lined up, director Guillermo del Toro has decided what he’ll take on next. Teaming with Fox Searchlight, we only previously knew the project was described as an “otherworldly love story set against the backdrop of Cold War-era America circa 1963.” It’s set to begin production in August in Toronto, and we now have a title, new story details, and an expanded cast.
Along with Sally Hawkins and Octavia Spencer, A Serious Man‘s Michael Stuhlbarg and the Oscar-nominated Richard Jenkins, both stand-outs in virtually every film they take part in, have joined the cast, according to The Tracking Board. They also report the title is The Shape of Water, and the new story details paint a perfectly strange scenario. Check them out below:

I think at this point, most fans won't believe Pacific Rim 2 is going to happen until they actually see footage from it, but meanwhile director Guillermo del Toro has other projects in the works. One of them is a movie that's been described as an "otherworldly love story" set against the backdrop of the Cold War in 1963, and now some new rumored details about that film have risen to the surface.
The Tracking Board claims that the film, which has Sally Hawkins and Octavia Spencer on board to star, is called The Shape of Water, and involves a mute janitor named Elisa (Hawkins) who falls for an amphibious man who's being kept at the lab where she works. She tries to break him out with the help of her neighbor, who is said to be played by Richard Jenkins, but "the world outside of the lab, however, may prove to...

I've always said that Guillermo del Toro's talents seem to be best-utilized in smaller films, with tighter budgets that force him to tap into his own ingenuity and creativity to really make them fly. His last two major studio outings, Pacific Rim and Crimson Peak, were both greeted by slightly-above-average reviews and box office receipts that didn't exactly blow anyone away. His next film, though, is being made over at Fox Searchlight- which is Fox's indie-minded shingle. It's called The Shape Of Water, and it sounds like a return to Pan's Labyrinth territory for the Mexican filmmaker.
The Shape Of Water centers on a mute janitor, played by Oscar-nominated actress Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine), who falls in love with an amphibious man creature at the lab where she works. He's being held captive, and so she enlists the help of her neighbor to try to break the creature she loves out of the facility.

Director Guillermo del Toro's latest project is The Shape Of Water - a romantic fantasy set in the Cold War era...
Any film by Guillermo del Toro is worth seeing, but it's the smaller-scale, fantastical dramas that have long excited us the most. From his feature debut Cronos to The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth, they display an unmistakeable level of passion and craft.
We're excited to learn, then, that his next feature is an original project with distinct echoes of those earlier movies. As uncovered by The Tracking Board, it's reportedly called The Shape Of Water, and like The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth, sets an imaginative plot against a real-world period backdrop.
The story will take place in 1963, the era of the Cold War, the Vietnam conflict and the civil rights movement. Sally Hawkins will star as Elisa, a janitor working at a laboratory...

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates -- Oscar winner Susan Sarandon spoke about her role as an actress and activist during the second annual Middle East International Film Festival.
Sarandon was guest of honor at a Cinema Verite screening of social documentary "The Shape of Water," narrated by Sarandon and directed by scholar and cultural critic Kum Kum Bhavani. The documentary revolves around the local activism of five women in Brazil, India, Jerusalem and Senegal in response to issues facing them such as oppression and lack of economic freedom.
"These women represent films which have resulted in a tipping of consciousness and made a difference," Sarandon said in a panel discussion after the screening. "In the U.S. we don't have the opportunity to see these films; even English documentaries are hard to find. Festivals are a wonderful opportunity for people to see documentaries they might not normally see."
