Willie Nelson has quite the busy summer ahead of him. That did not stop him from starting that summer early at the Luck Reunion Festival 2024 in Texas. For one song, “The Red-Headed Stranger” was joined onstage for a duet with a television icon and superstar. The two sang the Oscar-nominated song “Rainbow Connection.”
Luck Reunion Festival 2024
Willie Nelson was, once again, at the Luck Reunion Festival. Joining him at this festival was Old Crow Medicine Show, Madi Diaz, John Oates and Tyler Childers. There was also a very special (and famous) guest known all around the world.
Making the special appearance at the Luck Reunion Festival was none other than Kermit the Frog. He and Willie Nelson had sang together.

At 90 years young, there appears to be nothing that will slow Willie Nelson down. “The Red-Headed Stranger” is still doing everything he was doing when he started his career in country music. In a much-anticipated duet more than 20 years in the making, Willie Nelson was finally joined onstage by Kermit the Frog to perform “Rainbow Connection” together Thursday at the Luck Reunion.
The Oscar-nominated song was a hit for Kermit (and Jim Henson) after it featured in 1979’s The Muppet Movie, and over the next decades was covered by the likes of the Carpenters, the Chicks, Kenny Loggins, and Nelson, whose tender rendition became a classic in its own right after it featured on his 2001 album also titled Rainbow Connection.

Directed by Tony Richardson, this 1982 “neo-noir” stars Jack Nicholson as Charlie Smith, a border agent up to his neck in a human smuggling scheme run by his glad-handing partner played by Harvey Keitel. The fine cast is rounded out by Warren Oates and Valerie Perrine, but it’s Nicholson who shines in one of his best performances. Ry Cooder’s plaintive score is a striking counterpoint to the film’s gritty atmosphere.

Greetings, friends. If you're someone who returns to this sporadic column seeking Blu-ray info, I want to thank you. You're swell! And as always, I will continue to bring you the latest in Blu-rays. This week has one of the best movies of 2021: Steven Spielberg's "The Fabelmans." But wait, there's more! There's a 4K release of Hype Williams' amazing cult classic "Belly," Disney's recent animated flick "Strange World," Elvis fighting a mummy in "Bubba Ho-Tep," and of course, the "Black Panther" sequel "Wakanda Forever." That's a fine line-up if you ask me.
The Fabelmans
Steven Spielberg has been talking about making a movie about his childhood for decades, and he finally got around to it with "The Fabelmans." But this isn't hagiography, or Spielberg talking about what a talented kid he was (even though he was). Instead, this is Spielberg grappling with what is arguably the most persistent...

What's Jack Nicholson's secret? Maybe it's the eyebrows, hovering like ironic quotation marks over every line reading. Maybe it's the hooded eyes, which hold the threat of danger or the promise of joviality -- you're never sure which. Same with that sharklike grin. Or maybe it's the voice, which has evolved over the years from a thin sneer to a deep rumble, but is always precisely calibrated to provoke a reaction. Put them all together, and they say: "I am a man to be reckoned with. Ignore me at your peril." Nicholson, who turns 75 on April 22, is often criticized for relying on his bag of tricks, for just showing up and doing Jack Nicholson (though indeed, he often seems to have been hired precisely for that purpose). But he's also capable of burrowing deep into a character, finding his wounded heart, and revealing the ugly truth without fear or vanity.

CBC, a Canadian TV network, surely didn't renew the TV series The Border for a fourth season last year. However, the TV series' first season will premiere in the USA on Ion Television, an American cable network.
The show will premiere on July 8 with two back-to-back episodes starting at 10 Pm.
In this TV series, we follow a squad of the fictitious Immigration Customs Security (Ics), a Canadian federal agency responsible of the security on the border between Canada and the USA. Major Mike Kessler (James McGowan) heads his team and does his best to maintain a clear-eyed decency while responding to the call of duty. He often clashes with agent Bianca Lagarda (Sofia Milos), an agent sent by the American government to work with the Ics.
The show also stars Graham Abbey, Nazneen Contractor, Jonas Chernick, Mark Wilson, Jim Cordington, Catherine Disher, Sarah Gadon and Nigel Bennett.

With the Twilight series coming to a close, Robert Pattinson has found a new leading lady, Sarah Gadon. She will play his estranged wife, Elise Shifrin, in the upcoming film Cosmopolis.
Sarah Gadon is one lucky girl – she will be married to Robert Pattinson in Cosmopolis. According to our sister site Deadline, Sarah has been cast as Elise Shifrin in the movie adaptation of the popular book. We decided to take a look back at the movie script to see what kind of love scenes we can expect from Rob and Sarah!
Forget the honeymoon phase, Eric Packer and Elise have only been married for a short time and already have turmoil in their relationship. Their marriage is strained from the start as the two don’t know each other well at all. In fact, she only notices that he has blue eyes 22 days into their marriage since he has a penchant for wearing sunglasses.

Talk about a big break. In the past few hours Sarah Gadon has gone from “who?” to “you know, the girl playing Robert Pattinson‘s estranged wife in Cosmopolis.” Not only is it every actor’s dream to be cast alongside the hottest living human – it’s every person with a libido’s dream. Lucky! The movie details 24 hours in the life of billionaire businessman Eric Packer, played by Pattinson, in which he rides around in a limousine, nails a lot of women, and tries to outwit men who are after him after he scams his clients out of their savings. Did we mention he has a lot of sex?
Gadon may be a relative unknown, but she’s been acting for years. A native of Canada, the almost 24-year-old has appeared on such shows there as Being Erica and The Border and done voice-over work for cartoons. Perhaps her...

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Note bene: Those fools over at the JoBlo Movie Show Podcast decided it would be a good idea if I hung out for the night to talk about movies.

There was a time when Hawaii Five-o dominated prime time TV. That was over 30 years ago. Now, there exists several new generations of TV viewers who have never heard of Det. Steve McGarrett, Danny or Chin-Ho. Hawaii Five-0 isn’t a reboot in the loosest sense; it’s a prequel. However, it’s a series that will still need to break the shackles of reboot-remake-itis. CBS knew this in casting the series. They plucked Daniel Dae Kim (Lost) to be Det. Chin Ho Kelly, while his Lost-fame was still fresh. Less than two years after Battlestar Galactica concluded, Grace Park (The Border) returns with the ongoing role of Kona Kalakaua, Chin-Ho’s cousin and bikini-wearing bombshell with a lethal cross punch. Scott Caan, who typically plays the guy you love to hate in TV shows like Entourage and movies like Ocean’s Eleven, finally gets to show his warm-cuddly side as single father Det.

The Canadian distributor Vsc has sent a hi-res picture of the DVD artwork of The Border's third season. This Canadian espionnage series - which was aired on the public TV network CBC - will come out on DVD on August 10.
Despite the good reviews the shot has gotten, CBC didn't renew The Border for a fourth season.
The show tells the story of the fictional Immigration and Custom Security (Ics). The group is led by Maj. Mike Kessler, a former soldier of the Joint Task Force 2 (Canada's elite army). While Det. Sgt. Layla Hourani (Nazneen Contractor) died in the second season's finale, she'll be replaced by Khalida Massi (Athena Karkanis), a polyglot agent. Other than that, the Ics is under investigation by the Canadian Public Security ministry because of the screw-up that occured during a border operation at the end of season two.

Toronto -- The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. on Friday renewed the Newfoundland-based comic drama "Republic of Doyle" for a second season.
The crime series from creator Allan Hawco and Take the Shot Productions features the Newfoundland actor playing the titular role of detective Jake Doyle, who runs a detective agency with his father Malachy, played by Irish actor Sean McGinley.
"Republic of Doyle" seizing the public broadcaster's last 9 p.m. slot will mean the axe for the action drama "The Border" from White Pine Pictures after three seasons. The Sofia Milos and James McGowan-starring drama about an elite Toronto immigration and customs tactical team also airs on Ion Television stateside.
The renewal of "The Republic of Doyle" also means no series pickup for the CBC pilot "Tangled," a one hour action adventure from Shaftesbury Films.

Toronto -- A day after announcing plans to cut as many as 800 jobs, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. on Thursday said it will cancel "The Simpsons" and "The Martha Stewart Show" in a cost-cutting maneuver.
The pubcaster also said it will lower license fees and order fewer episodes of such popular Canadian TV series as "The Border," "Being Erica," and "Little Mosque on the Prairie" to deal with a growing advertising downturn.
Other savings will come from the cancellation of daytime lifestyle series, a cut in expenditures on daytime kids programming and the end of some sports programming, including Toronto Blue Jays games.
The Cbc also will cut 80 jobs at its Cbc News division.
On the radio side, the public broadcaster will cancel some popular radio shows as well as reduce regional radio noontime shows to one hour and live music recordings by half.

"The Guard," from Lionsgate, revolves around the members of a Coast Guard Search and Rescue team.
Ion has acquired all U.S. television, digital media rights, Internet streaming and video-on-demand rights for both shows.

CBS on Thursday signed a deal to co-produce its second cop drama with CTV after the Canadian network last year brought it "Flashpoint" during the WGA strike.
"The Bridge," from E1 Entertainment and 990 Multi Media Entertainment, was created by former police officer Craig Bromell and written by Alan Di Fiore ("Da Vinci's Inquest).
"The Bridge" portrays cops battling criminals on the streets and their bosses and know-nothing politicians in the corridors of power. The series stars Aaron Douglas ("Battlestar Galactica") as a police union head who locks horns with the police brass in an attempt to combat corruption.
Bromell said the Canadian series, a twist on the cops-and-cons procedural, takes viewers behind police lines to where ordinary officers are forced to combat corruption and skullduggery by their top brass and politicians when they're not patrolling the streets.
