- TriviaIn 156 episodes of "Highway Patrol", Dan Mathews committed just one noteworthy error in police tactics and it occurs in this episode. Dan manages to capture Dolly Parker by the side of the road, but he forgets that Joe Parker is nearby and has a potential hostage. When Joe threatens to kill the abducted businessman, Dan is forced to surrender his gun and allow Dolly to handcuff him to his patrol car. Mathews volunteers to do this himself; he attaches one cuff to his left wrist and the other to the post between the main window on the driver's door and the smaller ventilation window. Dolly also takes the handcuff key. When Mathews subsequently asks Sergeant Williams to "get me out of this", Williams smirks and Dan is forced to gruffly admit, "Awright, awright - I goofed! Gimme your keys!"
- GoofsMathews tells Williams the lab reported that, based upon the footprint evidence, the suspect was 170 pounds, 6 feet tall, and in his early 30's. While it is possible to deduce weight based upon a single impression in the ground, it is impossible to deduce the height or age of the person that left it. A similar error took place in Frightened Witness (1958) when Mathews said the lab reports of footprints revealed the gender, height (to within a half-inch), and weight of the subjects.
- Quotes
Walter Miller: How come he picked me? I only had $30 in my pocket.
Chief Dan Mathews: He didn't pick you - you picked him. Sucker!

One of four (4) different "Hitchhiker" episodes on Highway Patrol!
This episode, filmed in 1959 Season 4, is the last of the four episodes with the title "Hitchhiker" that appeared on the televison show, Highway Patrol. Season 1 featured "Hitchhiker", and "Hitchhiker Dies"; Season 2 featured "Female Hitchhiker". At least one Reviewer of this particular episode ("Hitchhiker") has confused it with the Season 1 episode. --- In this show, Richard Deems and Fran Bennett give a convincing performance as a couple committing small-time armed robbery to make their way across the country. --- One interesting note about this episode: Broderick Crawford was a great actor; he has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. One star for his 140 movies, another star for his many television shows. Mr. Crawford was known as a hard drinker. Occasionally, his directors would cancel or reschedule a shoot because Mr. Crawford had had one too many drinks. That is apparent in the beginning scenes of this episode. Crawford, as Chief Matthews, is in his office at Highway Patrol Headquarters interviewing a crime victim. Matthews is somewhat jovial, calling the victim "sucker". He is obviously a bit tipsy. Crawford trips over a couple of his lines ("the suspect is 30-30 years old"). He has sobered up by the time the later scenes are filmed, including the car chase. This is an exciting episode from the classic TV series, "Highway Patrol"!
