Since his involvement was announced, there’s been a fair amount of secrecy surrounding and speculation regarding who, exactly, Julian Dennison, star of Hunt for the Wilderpeople, will be playing in the upcoming Deadpool 2.
Fan theories have the young New Zealander portraying a variation of Hope Summers, Kid Apocalypse or Firefist, on account of his pyrokinetic abilities. Now, however, thanks to a brand new trailer denoting that advance tickets for the pic will go on sale this Thursday, there’s been a significant break in the case.
At one moment in the teaser, Wade Wilson, the titular foul-mouthed mercenary portrayed by Ryan Reynolds, refers to Dennison’s character as Russell. Now, assuming that the film will take characters directly from the comic books, which they’ve been doing for a majority of the roles thus far, the Russell in question is…drumroll please, Firefist, Aka Russell Collins.

Gavin O'Connor's Warrior was a surprise critical and box office hit back in 2011, as well as being one of the first studio films set within the increasingly popular world of Mixed Martial Arts fighting. That film pitted brothers Tom Hardy (Bronson, The Dark Knight Returns, Mad Max Fury Road) and Joel Edgerton (Animal Kingdom, Acolytes, The Gift) against one another in an Mma battle and garnered positive notices, much to everyone's surprise. The film, rife with sibling rivalry, hatred, and melodrama, was snatched up for reevaluation and remake by India's Dharma Productions and seemed like a slam dunk for its producers, who handed the project to director Karan Malhotra, following up his surprise corker Agneepath (2012). However, sometimes things have a way unraveling in a...

Shane Krause has a refreshingly candid view of the commercial prospects of The Contents, a self-funded supernatural thriller which marks his directing debut.
.If the film turns out to be any good we will get interest. from distributors and sales agents, says Krause, who co-wrote and produced the film with his regular collaborator Shayne Armstrong.
.If it doesn.t it will die the death it deserves to. The amount of money at risk is pitifully small. If it doesn.t work no one gets hurt..
The cast and a small crew worked irregularly on the film for the past six months shooting on locations in Brisbane. Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

The follow-up to the shark-in-a-flooded -supermarket saga previously known as Bait 2 has been retitled Deep Water.
The switch signals this is a stand-alone horror movie, not a sequel, with killer sharks as the common element, according to the producer, Arclight Films' Gary Hamilton.
Screen Australia is funding the development of the project which is being scripted by Shayne Armstrong and Shane Krause, who were among the writing team on the original.
The plot revolves around a flight from Beijing to Sydney which crashes in the Pacific, pitting an air marshal and a small group of survivors against huge tiger sharks.
The first film, shot in 3D, cost $20 million and earned more than $40 million at cinemas worldwide, including $27 million in China. Hamilton said Screen Australia will see a return on its investment in that film.

The Dlshs website is still live, although the telephone today remained unanswered.

Opening with a titillating full-frontal act of fornication in front of a group of champagne guzzling, celery-stick chomping upper-class lady types, X seemingly prepares you for the ensuing unflinching proceedings that lay ahead. But contrary to the beautifully blunt title this is no exposé of the seedy underworld of Sydney’s red light district – director Jon Hewitt is more interested in setting up some suspenseful surprises that give this film more of a instinctual killer thriller narrative thrust.
Not that we should be surprised. Hewitt is a film-maker infamous in Oz for smart serial killer thrillers like Redball and Acolytes and the sexually tinged Darklovestory. But before that there was his audacious Melbourne-set vampire killing, all-screwing and drug-taking 1992 debut Bloodlust. So there were always sordid hints in this film-maker’s make-up.

Joel Edgerton may play Themistocles in the 300 sequel entitled 300: Battle of Artemisia. Frank Miller has already crafted the graphic novel on which the film will be based. 300‘s director Zack Snyder and 300 writer Kurt Johnstad have finished work on a screenplay for the film and Noam Murro will be directing the film.
This is the first casting speculation I have seen for the 300 sequel but I have seen Joel Edgerton in Warrior recently and The Acolytes. I shorted the The Thing prequel (that’s a rental). Whether any 300 stars make a cameo (one-eyed Dilios with the gift of speech, played by David Wenham or Rodrigo Santoro‘s Xerxes) in the film is uncertain.
For those unaware, Themistocles was:
an Athenian politician and a general. He was one of a new breed of politicians who rose to prominence in the early years of the Athenian democracy, along with his great rival Aristides.

Australian feature film X will get a local cinematic release later this year.
Director Jon Hewitt told Encore, despite the film being finished for over a year the plan was always to give X the time to release internationally first.
The film will be distributed by Potential Films, beginning with November 24 in Melbourne and Adelaide before opening in Sydney December 1.
Hewitt, whose other films include Acolytes and Bloodlust, told Encore: “We always had distribution, but it was a matter of when it would get a release.”
“It’s tougher than it’s ever been to get a non-Hollywood or tentpole film out there, be it tentpole commercial or tentpole art house. X is a film that needs a careful and nurtured release. The one thing I wanted to do was release it internationally first. The fact it recently got to 14 on IMDBs movie metre (a week by week hottest search...

The benchmark for any decent film festival is the level of cinematic diversity it offers. A good mix of entertaining, provocative, intriguing and possibly even perverse selections from around the globe with a few classic retrospectives thrown in for good measure that inform, intrigue, delight, outrage and provoke thoughtful debate is all that one can hope for in a well compiled line-up. Thankfully Brisbane’s 20th anniversary international film festival, which commences on the 3rd November, appears to have delivered that desired ensemble.
While commencing with the Aussie premieres of Joe Cornish’s UK genre-bender Attack the Block and closing with Pedro Almodovar’s psychologically intense genre hybrid The Skin I Live In, and with a few entries bleeding over from this year’s Sydney Film Festival (Martha Marcy May Marlene, Tyrannosaur and Take Shelter amongst others), there’s more than enough fresh material in between to make the trip to another Aussie state worthwhile.

Hitting theaters today is Gavin O'Connor's new film Warrior. Starring burgeoning superstars Tom Hardy (Bronson, The Dark Knight Rises) and Joel Edgerton (The Square, Acolytes), both brawny actors, who also carry some seriously undenaible acting chops, Warrior could very well be this generations Rocky. A thinking man's fight film with a cast worthy of many Oscar nominations, this looks to be a thing of violent, yet cerebral, and heartfelt beauty. They had me at Nick Nolte. The plot description follows -Haunted by a tragic past, ex-Marine Tommy Conlon (Hardy) returns home for the firsttime in fourteen years to enlist the help of his father (Nick Nolte) to train for Sparta, the biggest winner-takes-all event in mixed martial arts history. A former wrestling prodigy, Tommy blazes a path...

Sorry this is so late this week gang!
The Perfect Host - stars David Hype Pierce as a crazy mofo, so that's your sales pitch right there. It's too bad the trailer and marketing for the film really gave that away because I think it's the turn that probably got the film made. Anyway, one to watch out for.
Wrecked - stars Adrian Brody as a guy who wakes up in a wrecked car in the woods with no memory. Good set-up and Brody is great (as usual), but the film fell a little flat for me. I like that it went for realism, the second act was meandering and felt like there was something lacking. Like we're just killing time for the reveal at the end. But like I said, decent thriller with a great performance by Brody.
Bereavement - I don't know much about Bereavement, but it's touted...

Who’s the ghost with the most? The new Aussie haunted house chiller 18 may actually be a contender. Fango scared up some exclusive pics (many of the gnarly-lookin’ spooks themelves!) from the film, which comes from Acolytes screenwriters Shayne Armstrong and S.P. Krause (the latter also making his directorial debut on the film) and features makeup FX by Daybreakers Fango Chainsaw nominee Steven Boyle. Viva Bianca has a illustrious talent for playing sexual, confident women struggling to shine out from under the shadow of imposing men.
The Spartacus: Blood and Sand star took the time to shoot lead role Holly Rowe of IFC Films call-girl drama X, available on-demand now, and we at Ugo had a chance to speak to the lovely Australian actress on both the film, and Spartacus' future.
Directed by Jon Hewitt (Acolytes), X follows Holly as a high-priced call girl taking on one last night before running away to Paris, only to find herself embroiled with corrupt cops in a drug deal gone south. Observing the similarities between Holly's feminine strength and her Spartacus character Ilithyia, Bianca noted:
"That very contradiction is what’s so alluring [about the role]. Strength yet vulnerabilty, independent yet dependant or co-dependant. It’s interesting to hear the parallels people have drawn between Ilityhia and Holly, because at...

For many people going to the dentist is the stuff of nightmares. All that drilling and fluid flying. Apparently even vampires need to have their teeth tended to every now and again, but not exactly for personal hygiene related reasons.
Below you'll find what will no doubt be a nightmarish promo for people who have fears of dentistry (or something happening to their teeth) courtesy of Twitch Film. It's in support of Jon Hewitt's (Acolytes) new flick Vampyr.
Starring Belinda McClory, Vampyr begins when "a successful TV news anchor disappears and is found a week later with no memory and shockingly brutalized. Dismissed by authorities and colleagues as just another date-rape, her life gradually unravels in a growing obsession with mystery, truth and retribution.

With his sexy thriller X now rolling out in the Us Australia's Jon Hewitt is casting his eye to the future. And what has captured the Acolytes director's attention is a bloody experimental horror film titled Vampyr.Slated to star Belinda McClory (The Matrix) Hewitt describes it as an extreme horror revolving around "a brutalized TV news anchor (McClory) who descends into homicidal madness" in a story that will turn the rape-revenge genre on its head.Though the film has not yet begun production Hewitt has shot a brief promo to help sell the concept to potential investors in Cannes and it's immediately obvious that this will not be a typical vampire movie. Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? X Trailer Jon Hewitt's last feature Acolytes starred Joel Edgerton, one of the best reasons why a strong ensemble makes a great movie even...

Bella Heathcote (Acolytes) is in early talks for Victoria Winters in Dark Shadows, Tim Burton's bigscreen adaptation of the 1960s supernatural soap opera opposite Johnny Depp for Warner Bros. Deadline adds that the new Freddy Krueger, Jackie Earle Haley, is also in talks to play "Willie Loomis". The original followed the life of vampire Barnabas Collins, played by Depp, and his run-ins with various monsters, ghosts, and supernatural creatures. Heathcote would play local waitress who Collins takes a shine to because she resembles his long-lost love. As for Haley (Watchmen, A Nightmare on Elm Street), the Loomis role was a pivotal one on the soap. Loomis is a notorious con artist who comes to Collinwood bent on swindling the reclusive matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard. He winds up living in the mansion and hatches a plan when he observes a portrait of the late Barnabas Collins...

The first images of the X trailer are scintillating. They’re seductive. Co-writer/Director Jon Hewitt follows up his serial killing blackmail thriller Acolytes with a new flick about the dangerous, tawdry world of prostitution and call girls. It looks absolutely gripping, and the promise of violence will undoubtedly be kept with Hewitt at the helm, but watch out for this trailer. Jon Hewitt directed Hanna Mangan Lawrence in Acolytes, and now the pair have teamed up again for X, which looks like it might be a disturbing thriller set within the bowels of Sydney's sex industry.Viva Bianca from Spartacus: Blood and Sand stars. After the break, there's a just barely safe for work trailer with enough dark, foreboding context that you might just feel bad about enjoying how great both stars are occasionally made to look. Looking at this I see glimmers of Lilya 4-Ever and Pusher III, and more than a few reflections of Enter the Void, though the movie on the whole appears to be a more mainstream sort of thriller that deals with the issues of control and violence that so often characterize the sex trade. (Someone's bound to mention Hardcore, too.) It's nicely shot, though, and seemingly well-acted, and the trailer packs a bit of a punch.

A new trailer has hit for Jon Hewitt’s (“Acolytes”) latest film, “X”, a thriller set against the seedy underworld of sex slaves, streetwalkers, and callgirls. The movie stars Hanna Mangan Lawrence and Viva Blanca (“Spartacus: Blood and Sand”), and from the looks of things, it going to be tense, grim, and more than a little bit bleak. Holly Rowe’s retiring, kissing her callgirl life goodbye. She just has to get through her last night on the job. Shay Ryan’s a teenage runaway, broke and alone. She just has to get through her first night as a hooker. Then fate throws them together on a job that goes horribly wrong and they’re suddenly racing on an out-of-control roller coaster ride, through Sydney’s criminal underworld. I'll never forget the images of Munich's red light district. I have a little slow motion memory, driving through a path of trailers with red (and other color) lights casting a certain festive glow over a the fleet of mobile hotel rooms. Some of the women advertised by standing in front of a window; on other trailers, the glass was shadowed by sheer curtains and only vague movement could be seen. Though prostitution is legal, Munich doesn't allow solicitation out on the streets, so the ladies had their own version of a campground, widely patrolled by the Polizei. I guess it sticks in my brain because the visual was motion picture-ish; sometimes one has those moments in life where time seems to stand still or seconds crawl. The flashes in this trailer reminded me of that time. Anyway, sometimes it's easy to project (perhaps because of film) a sort of...
