A very fine opening episode.

Bill wakes up in hospital following an eye operation, only to discover that the world has been struck by disaster.

It's a really good start, for me this is still the definitive version. You watch it and assume that everything is normal, a man simply wakes up following an operation, and gives us the information we need for later episodes, exactly what a Triffid is, and what it does.

It's unusual to see a first episode of any series or show told in such a way, the scene is pretty much set by Bill recounting events. The story is given 1980's BBC quality, and there are naturally opinions of the time, The Russian situation etc.

The Triffid we see in Bill's youth certainly looks the part, it looks suitably organic, it doesn't look like a nasty prop. Strong production values here from the start.

It becomes more and more unsettling as it develops, I think it's a cracking start, 9/10.
