In an expository flashback Grant says there have been interesting ideas coming from the Russian Lysenko. In the 1950s Lysenko, who rejected the idea of genetics, was a lousy scientist but a good Communist Party member. As head of Soviet agricultural science his ideas became law and devastated crop production, causing mass starvation and forcing the Soviet Union to buy surplus American wheat, corn, and soy beans for the next 20 years.
