CITY DETECTIVE – Handcuffs – 1953

This is episode 14 of the 1953 to 1955 Police series, CITY DETECTIVE. Rod Cameron headlines as a Detective in a major U.S. city. The series ran for a total of 64 episodes. The series featured quite a few well-known actors in guest bits. These include, Hugh Beaumont, Whit Bissell, Marie Windsor, Carolyn Jones, Fess Parker, Angie Dickinson, Russell Johnson, Claude Akins, George Macready, Beverly Garland, Ann Savage and Lee Van Cleef.

In this episode, Detective Rod Cameron is sent out to grab multiple time felon Ross Elliot. Elliot has a racket where he steals holiday trailers, repaints them and then sells them off. Elliot and his new wife, the sultry, Mary Ellen Kay, are camped out in a wooded area outside town. Cameron pulls up to put the pinch on Elliot. Cameron was not expecting the new Mrs. or that she would pull out a rifle and get the drop on him.

Miss Kay tells Elliot to bump off Cameron while she heads up state to where they have some cash stashed. Elliot is not at all pleased with this idea. He really does not like gun-play. He cuffs Cameron and gives him a good bash over the side of the head. He then takes off to meet up with the wife.

Cameron comes to and walks to the nearest farmhouse. The man there, Stuart Randall, thinks the handcuffed Cameron is an escaped prisoner and almost blasts him with his shotgun. After explanations are made, Randall drives Cameron into town.

Cameron spends the next few days contacting upstate police forces trying to find Elliot and the gun toting Kay. He gets a break when Kay is spotted at a small out the way motel. Cameron roars up to make the pinch. He jimmies his way into the hotel room and does a quick search of the vacant room. Kay he knows is at the bar next door tipping a few. Cameron finds a plane ticket to Chicago in Kay's suitcase. Just one ticket! Cameron now parks his butt in a chair in a dark corner and waits. 10 minutes later, Cameron hears someone picking at the lock. In pops Elliot who also does a quick look see of the wife's, suitcase. Now Cameron steps out of the shadows with his gun drawn. Cameron can see that Elliot is in a less than amused state. He is peeved that it took him 3 days to hunt up where Kay was staying. He also noticed that there was only one plane ticket.

Cameron tells the man that he has done some checking up on Miss Kay. It seems that the pretty thing has worked her way through a string of husbands. She always takes the cash and leaves the men in dutch with the law.

Kay now makes an appearance to grab her case and ticket. The most unhappy Elliot asks why only the one ticket? Kay's answer does not cut it and Elliot goes for her throat. Cameron steps forward and breaks the tussle up. He slaps the handcuffs on and leads them off for their date with the judge.

The series has that rushed, shot in 5 days look to it, which actually works in its favour. The clapboard sets etc give it a nice seedy look. This particular episode was shot by the one-time Oscar nominated cinematographer, Ellsworth Fredericks.
