In this episode Dr. Splitz and Splitzy become separate Space Monkeys. This is a common trope of a hero learning to love themselves. Buffy The Vampire did this with Xander in the S05E03 The Replacement, which aired 4 years after Splitzy's Choice.
But something that is very cool, is the opening feels very much like some of the stuff in the first episode of Firefly, The Train Job, and also the heist at the beginning of the Firefly movie Serenity.
And those were 2002 and 2005, and Space Monkeys is from 1996.
Since Muppet Babies in the late 80's, many funny 90's TV cartoon series have of history of referencing popular theatrical movies.
Captain Simian and the Space Monkeys might be the only one to reference a show and movie that didn't exist yet.
