A breath of fresh air
From Nose to Mouth is a fascinating film on many different levels. Despite a lack of any clear plot, the film contains a series of perplexing and mesmerising scenes, making it clear that the film's interests lie not at all in plot, but more in it's weaving of ideas and moments. The film follows a female character attempting to connect with the strange world around her- be it through her ice dancing lessons or her bizarrely translated email correspondent. What struck me was a feeling of disorientation, a strange dizziness where the boundaries of what makes up an 'understandable' environment are at times confused. This is all delivered in a surreal manner, but one which serves to create a sense of alienation towards each little task the character is involved in. The character's surroundings are impenetrable, but I did not find the film itself impenetrable at all. The music and sound is very inventive- mostly electronic; rarely have I seen a film which combines image and manipulated sound so well. For me the film was about a set of relationships, not about some sort of ultimate meaning. It's fairly challenging viewing, but not if you are willing to forget about conventional narrative-style structure and follow the film's idiosyncratic editing and pace. The look and style of the film has a slightly quirky pop sensibility which i found quite charming and served the film's strangeness well. Ultimately, I found the film engaging and highly perplexing in a good way, and would love to watch it again. We need more adventurous films like this!
