George Jetson is given a very rude awakening one early Saturday morning. Why is he up so early on a Saturday? Today is the day they shop for their new space car. He promptly yells at Elroy for flying in the house and cooks a frozen breakfast for his family. Suddenly there is a phone call. Jane's friend, Gloria. Not wanting her to see her without make-up, Jane quickly applies a fake face and it really works, except Gloria sneezes, making her own face mask come flying off. George takes a quick look at the news, seeing notorious criminal Knuckles Nuclear has broken out of the clink. George hopes he never runs into him...so we all know they're going to cross paths. Not far away, Knuckles and his girlfriend/moll were making a break in a clunky getaway car 'lent' to them by the moll's grandmother. After stopping by the bank for a quick 'withdrawl', they stash the car in a nearby garage and try to look for a better set of jets, leaving the big bag of loot in the back. The garage just happened to be in the Jetsons' apartment building, and as George and Jane head for their car, Henry Orbit shows them a 100 year old antique car he just happened to have. It surprisingly still runs, but not well and kicks up enough smog to cover Los Angeles. Stumbling out into the garage, George and Jane get in a car they assume is theirs and fly off, with Jane at the wheel and an overly-nervous George backseat driving. On the way, they think there's something very different about their car. But before they can deduce what it is, they're pulled over for speeding. Thankfully the judge lets them off, just as an announcement comes over the radio saying Knuckles Nuclear and his moll were seen driving an old car. The idiotic policeman automatically assumes George was Knuckles and calls for back up; at Molecular Motors, George and Jane are given an in-depth video tour on how their cars are made: built from yesterday's garbage, even tailor-made to fit an individual of unusual size. They have cars with individual, sound-proof bubbles. Great for when bringing along the mother in-law. The salesman takes George and Jane on a test drive in a Suburbanite, which travels half the speed of light. When the g-force settles, they decide to purchase the vehicle. That's when they discover a huge bag in the back of their old car, complete with dollar sign on the front. Perplexed as to how this money got into their car, and as to why their car is not their car, they head home. Meanwhile, the police had surrounded the Jetsons' apartment building, while Knuckles Nuclear was inside, trying to pump Henry with information on who made off with their car. Eventually the cops tell the difference between George and Knuckles and apprehend the right one. The Jetsons are given a reward, which they put towards their new space car. George even lets Jane drive, and is undaunted by how clumsy she is, as he's come up with a foolproof way to feel 100% safe in any car driven by his wife: a blindfold.
Interesting episode, strange in several areas, but an imaginative way to look at driving in the future. It's 2010 and we still don't have those flying cars, which is probably a good thing because we would more than likely have even more accidents. Now changing the subject for a moment, but if you noticed at the beginning of this episode, there's a part where George raises a fist like he's about to hit Elroy. Probably the only time in the series this is ever seen. We all know George is not abusive, and these were the days before Homer Simpson and Bart, but this did seem out of character for George to raise a hand to his kids. Oh well. So, check out "The Space Car". This apparently leads to "Jane's Driving Lesson" a few episodes later, which alludes back to Jane's clumsy driving and the video judge.
