Clever and impacting film (SPOILERS)

Warning: Spoilers
In a park on a dark night a woman is attacked and raped by an unknown assailant. Meanwhile Tyra sets out from her flat to head across the park to work and comes across a mobile phone ringing.

Shown in the UK recently as part of TCM's Classic Shorts competition for 2007, this to me was better than the "enjoyable as a reference" winner in "A Bout de Truffle" because of the impact and the clever telling. Ultimately the story is simple and ends on a positive note but the manner of telling makes it enjoyable – and I will spoil it by discussing it so read no further. The film is presented as if the rape victim is somehow different from Tyra and that the latter had a lucky escape. However towards the end of the film it is revealed that she was the victim and that the version we have just seen is in some way her denial of what has happened to her.

If it sounds simple then I suppose that is because it is but the way in which it is delivered makes it more than that. The structure and the reveal make it engaging and cleverer than my description makes it sound. The director works this well as he builds tension when we believe Tyra is next then delivers a punch as we discover she was the victim; it is well delivered and the rape scene is impacting and upsetting without actually showing much – which I find is the better way to do such things. Edberg leads the cast well and convinces with her dual characters and the merge between them while the supporting cast back her up.

Overall this is a clever and impacting short film that deals with a serious subject and a delicate mental reaction with good taste and intelligence.
