Winner of IFTA's Best Film next year.
Two foul-mouthed working-class kids escape from their dreary council estate to even drearier Dublin city centre.
It's been another bad year for Irish cinema but thankfully Kisses arrives to save some embarrassment. Though not as good as expected it's still a fine movie - similar in parts to Pavee Lackeen and Once. Starting off with some bad language from the kids (resulting in a few audience walkouts) the movie slowly goes into colour as the kids arrive into the city centre. Makes a welcome change to the recent crap getting produced (A Film With Me and Anton's Alarm of the Summer of the Flying Saucer In It) - hand-held camera-work; non-actors (no Fair City 'talent' here); street locations; homeless people; and scenes with actual life. Didn't understand the Bob Dylan theme and the movie gets a bit predictable - uneven acting scenes followed by music sequences over again. Reminds me this year's of Somers Town.
Kisses is well worth a look though not as good as expected.
