Good magical genre anime to waste time
Irishchatter18 February 2019
I know theres a lot of ecchi, lolis, big boobs and all other flashy stuff involved in this anime but it really is entertaining if you wanna waste your time for a few laughs or two! The English Dub cast are pretty neat like Lauren Landa as Kirche was the best out of them all. Same time all were good too in their own way! I wouldn't call this series the best out there but its definitely not the worst, give it a try!

Lighthearted, comic series with some interesting story lines & action.
ajrcvr13 August 2016
The "Familiar of Zero" features several main characters, but the predominant two are Louise, a comely young female in a strange world where magic prevails, and Saito, a boy who is magically summoned there from Earth by Louise's rite to obtain herself a "familiar." Familiars are creatures teleported into this society from wherever by all the magical (noble) people of this society when they come of age, to help their masters with their magic and battles.

The only overriding story arc throughout all 4 series is the stormy, and ofttimes comical, relationship between Louise and Saito. She is a childish, immature, jealous, and short-tempered noble who has a difficult time handling her more laidback and relatively Earthly normal boy familiar, Saito. It does get a little old to have her rage against him constantly, even as she falls in love with him, but the creators maintain that as a comic element throughout. The other nobles have summoned strange creatures like flying dragons and oversized moles and other things that don't fall into any category at all; Louise summoned another human, for which she is ridiculed, for he is one not even from her world. She also has difficulty employing her magic, which is why she is called "Louise the Zero." The only thing she can reliably do is cause explosions, which are often inappropriate while she is trying to do something else, all of which doesn't help her reputation; but it is occasionally funny.

Louise and Saito, along with their other bevy of friends, encounter a series of problems for their kingdoms throughout the 4 series, and the magical people must employ all their magic to do the battles and resolve the issues. There are monsters and bad guys and a few poignant situations which the two main characters have to confront with all of their friends, but always it is Louise, who doesn't want to admit that she's fallen in love with her familiar, that rages at and explodes her love interest, Saito, when he even looks at some of the other busty women around them. Louise herself, although quite attractive, has a slimmer build, which constantly irritates her in the face of her more zaftig girlfriends and associates, particularly when Saito looks at them and/or they are sweet on him.

Beyond that, all the noble magicians must confront these difficult situations for their kings and queens to save them, the kingdom, and sometimes the planet, from destruction by maniacal evildoers. Essentially created as a comedy, the "Familiar ..." series has some tender moments and some creditable story arcs within it. Graphics, animation, and music are routine, with nothing special about them, but they are adequate, and don't get in the way of the stories. There are some shapely, scantily clad females provided for viewers, but nothing that comes up to what you might call "fan service"; it probably could have used some to provide a little more visual interest, since there were many opportunities for it, but the creators kept it more youthfully oriented and didn't do that. Altogether, "The Familiar of Zero" is a lighthearted series with some interesting story arcs, comedy, and battle scenes, which should provide ample entertainment for those who watch it.

Zero no tsukaima - Fun but Standard
Cafelar25 January 2020
Few things differ this anime from any other of this genre, keeping the characters' personality and even their powers within the standard, without much news. However, the relationship between Saito and Louise becomes interesting, and very close to the end some revelations start what could be a good plot, but at this moment the anime comes to an end.

a very nice and entertaining series
patricknijland17 May 2007
The animation isn't the best quality if you compare this to Kanon 2006 or the two Rozen Maiden series but it isn't a problem. Sounds are also not topnotch but the voices are very well chosen (especially the voice of Louise. great voice with lost of emotion and variation.). The main reason why i will recommend it is the story. The story about a boy who accidentally gets transported to another world and has to serve the one who got him there (a girl) ain't new, but what is is that it is brought in such a fashion that you notice small changes in personality. This enhances the pleasure of watching greatly. Also the interaction between the characters is of high quality. In all it is really worth watching this series and re-watching it to see all small details they carefully inserted into the series.

Warning: Spoilers
If there's japanese censor borad or something this anime should be banned. It clearly showcases making a human a slave. That's not the problem is he is treated worse than slave. How ? The heroine undress herself in front of him. We people can undress ourselves in front of ants and and mortified i guess. The protagonist has Stockholm syndrome. Heroine treats him worse than dog literally. So just jump to later episodes and watch or don't watch at all. The people reading it good have some warped mentality.

Funny and heartwarming, with just the right amount of naughtiness.
light-generator428 November 2014
I had my doubts when I began watching this show, but it turned out to be very entertaining. Overall the show is very funny and lighthearted, with wonderfully cute romance. While the show can be quite naughty at times (the main character is a bit perverted and looks suggestively at several girls), no full nudity is ever shown, and there is no implied or off- screen sex (as far as I can tell). The show is also considerably exciting, as the main characters face off against several villains throughout the four seasons. Though the graphics and animation of this show aren't top-notch, it's still an excellently crafted anime, full of bright colors, catchy music, and a plot that makes you want to watch more and more.

The best anime for first-time viewers.
usfirepilot9 June 2018
Okay, I'm not sure. This is actually the first anime I've ever watched. But, if you're just beginning to watch anime I can assure you this will definitively get you into everything about the anime experience!

Compared to American movies, especially those by Disney, Pixar, and the likes, it has a storyline like no other. The storywriting is amazing and everything from the uniqueness of- well, I wish I could tell you! But you just have to watch it yourself!

If you get attached to characters, especially when playing games or watching movies, then this TV show is for you. Connecting with the characters you can easily feel what they feel, and it will leave you wanting more. Attaching yourself to multiple characters, seeing from their eyes and their point of views, it changes everything and makes it so much more important to you. Please, I cannot recommend it enough. Especially if you're just experimenting with anime. Don't care if others call you "Weebs" or "Anime Lovers". They just won't, and don't, understand, until they watch it.

And yes, I may be a first time anime watcher, so this review might not be en point to any other anime, but being a first time watcher that means I can definitely give you the point of view from a beginner, and that's what's most important to getting more people into watching it, no?

10/10, absolutely amazing. I will be watching this again.

Warning: Spoilers
Some attitude face girl called Louis summons a boy from another dimension to be her familiar at the summoning ceremony. After he is summoned the boy is forced being louis slave who cleans her landarey and does what ever she says.

This anime is just annoying, I am sorry I watch all episodes and I just could not get into it at all.

The characters are lame

Louise is just an unlikeable and insufferable b####h. She does nothing but abuse Saito and be a spoiled brat. She is not even cute. 90% of the time I fantasy about grabbing by her hair and smash her face through a table.

Saito is just boring there is honestly nothing interesting about him at all. On top of that he is a simp.

The other characters aren't exactly anything special either.

I will admit though the dub was pretty enjoyable vocally it's a shame other seasons never got dubbed. Cristina Vee, Jonathan Meza, Lauren Landa and Jennifer Alyx did a good job but not even that could raise my score.

Look if you like this anime more power to you. But honestly I would recommend something like Re:Zero, Konosuba or Escaflowne.

So much Underrated
malayakumar-2781021 May 2022
Well i dont know which type anime everyone want to watch, but i think i fell in love with this anime. I dont know what people complain about the behaviour of the main character (girl) about not to show respect towards the protagonist. I understand where you are coming from but i think you should take this lightly as this is purely made for entertainment. Anyone who loved Harry potter then i think you will surely love this too,the Hogwarts feeling, Dumbledore ,magic etc. This anime is pretty decent, dont judge it by it's rating. Go for it,it is definitely worth watching. I think this is far better than some overrated series like overlord,One punch man,Kaguya sama love is war. There are so many series like tsugumomo,Danmachi,Fruit of Grisaia which are pretty decent, just go and watch these you will surely not regret this.literally so much Underrated. Those who found this series boaring and waste i think you should go and watch chotta Bheem. Thanks for reading the review.

It's a masterpiece
elavelnaveen16 November 2021
I watched all of the seasons from season 1 to season 4 in one week. This in my opinion is one of the best action/rom-com anime out there and I would highly recommend this to everyone to watch this. I'm glad that I am able to watch the whole series and I enjoyed it which made me speechless because the story and sequence is excellent. I am sure that everyone who will watch this will love and enjoy this master piece.

Very illogical.
wimperwell30 May 2008
Basically my problem with this show is the lack of respect towards human life and the warped sense of romance presented here. If you've seen love Hina this is very similar in that the protagonist of the story is kicked around a lot. In Love Hina it was somewhat funny, but in this it was just down right demeaning.

This guy who is brought to this magical world against his will is now treated as basically a slave, although he's referred to as a familiar, basically a pet that is supposed to serve their master. Except he's the only familiar who is a human, all the other one's are some kind of animal and yet even they get treated better. Some how this young man from modern day Japan is all accepting of this situation. Why? Why wouldn't he just explain to this girl the situation? Never once in the show is it properly explained, a little here and there, but he never actually makes an effort and yet after her treating him like crap he still likes her, come on now why not the maid? At least she was nice. Maybe girls will like this show, but guys you will not.

Overall the story and especially the romance amongst the characters in this show failed to add any realism even for the world in which they lived.

Not terrible, but bad
elite_jon28 December 2018
It completely lacks story. A normal guy, a "plebian" becomes a witches pet, a "familiar". The plebian isn't really angry and doesn't react in any way a normal human might, doesn't question how he got into his situation and even though he is treated like a slave stays positive. The first episodes are basically only about teen drama and doesn't explain any of the actually interesting elements of the show.

A misandrists dream
a_p_hart-0178219 November 2021
A boy summoned from another world to by a member of aristocracy is dragged into battle and situations he doesn't want to be in due to the incompetence of the summoner, and his sense of duty.

His reward, to be starved, beaten, humiliated and tortured by his master. If this was a man doing it to a woman we would see cancel culture kick in these days.

As the story repetitively drivels on, and Saito the summoned has chances to escape, it becomes like stockholm syndrome on him contiually accepting the abuse, as his master says she loves him, while still beating him, not maintaining any physical relation, and when she says she haes him and sends him away, stalks him and beats or used magic on him and anyone who goes near him.

You think as the series pass they would get closer or drift apart, but the same abusive relationship continues even when he has many other options from peasant to nobility lusting for him or showing signs of love. I honestly found it sick and twisted as initially it seems humorous a woman in charge in such anime, as it continues, it says a lot for what an insecure, abusive and malicious lump of scum louise is.

TWISTED!
eunychuks1 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I can't begin to express how wrong this show is.

I'm a fan of a man being passionate about the woman he loves but this is just outright foolery!

I watched the first season, I didn't like it. Then the second hoping that she'll change but still no. Then when the second season ended, after he went to war for her sake and literally died then came back to life, I had some kind of hope that she'll treat him better but I was again disappointed. I honestly wish I could get a refund of my data and time wasted on this series.

The worst part of it, is that she isn't treating him bad because of the aristocratics and plebeians stuff, because if it was so, the Queen wouldn't haven't been so affectionate towards the mc, she's treating him bad like that because she's outright TOXIC! She literally had no reason to treat him so and poor mc kept choosing her over and over and she kept on abusing him in return, even though he made his feelings very clear unlike her.

I am a woman and I don't support someone suffering or being a fool just cause they're in love, male or female.

I imagine that genders were reversed in this show, there's no way that this would have been aired.

And to think that this show was aired on actual TV! I really hope that kids didn't get to see this!

It protratys a twisted show of love and all things decent. It's just plain WRONG!

I would have given this a half star because of the nice animation quality but unfortunately one star is the least I can give.

Not recommended to anyone
Nikolas0112 August 2022
This is the first time that i rated something with one star, and i have a watchlist of 915 titles so believe when i say that this show is the worst. I saw the first episode and i hated it but i watched the second too because i wanted to give a chance to the series and i hated that too. The magician girl treats the protagonist with no respect at all as if he is her slave and he has him sleeping on the floor. If the roles was reversed and the guy treated the girl like that the show would have been cancelled by the second episode. And i think that the whole anime is an insult to the whole world, there used to be real human slaves and some still are (with that i mean that people still gets sold as objects).

If i was the protagonist i would have rather die than become a slave to that useless little brat that thinks that because shes noble she owns the world.
