Hollywood star reveals close friendship with one of Guildford Four, who suggested he play him in film that became In the Name of the Father
Johnny Depp has described his close friendship with Gerry Conlon, saying he would have “taken a bullet” for him, in a moving foreword to a new biography of the man who spent 15 years in prison after he was wrongly convicted as an Ira bomber.
The unlikely friendship between the Hollywood actor and Conlon, one of the Guildford Four, began when the pair met in the Us in 1990, the year after Conlon had his conviction overturned and was released from prison. Their friendship was sealed at a gig by the Pogues, where Depp described Conlon and his brother as looking “just like the miscreant, unhinged maniacs I always tended to hang out with”. Depp describes the book, In the Name of the Son, as “a story...

The rest of the lineup for the Ithaca International Fantastic Film Festival was announced today and if you are looking for something to heal those post Halloween blues then a trip to Central New York is in order, and you can thumb your nose at those Ivy Leaguers from Cornell at the same time. The following films are joining the already announced of Cheap Thrills, L.F.O.The movie, Confession of Murder, Demon's Rook, Bushido Man and I'm Divine. This year's closing film will be All Cheerleaders Die. The rest of the slate is In The Name of the Son, Nothing Bad Can Happen, Ben Wheatley's A Field in England, OxV: The Manual, Doomsdays, Sono Sion's Why Don't You Play in Hell?, the movie that made Todd...

Pedophilia is an ugly thing but it's particularly vile when an entire institution tries to cover up the fact of its existence. We've read the news stories and seen the documentaries and let's be honest, most sane rational people are tempted to take matters into their own hands, perhaps much like Elisabeth, the angel of vengeance in Vincent Lannoo's In the Name of the Son. [Continued ...]...

Belgian director Vincent Lannoo first caught eyes around these parts with Vampires, his slyly tongue in cheek moc-doc exploration of 'real life' vampires living in Brussels and Montreal. With his latest film, In The Name Of The Son, he tackles a more horrifying and more true to life topic.Elisabeth is brilliant, radiant and sunny on the day Father Achille arrives at her home. He is going to become part of her family. A perfect family that admires Elisabeth so much for her chat show on "Christian Hope Radio", for the time that she devotes to others, her family and housework. But neither her faith, nor "Christian Hope Radio", nor love will prevent Elisabeth from falling into the harsh reality. The lies of her husband, the...

Evoking the gospels both sacred and profane (Father Tarantino, hallowed be thy name), Vincent Lannoo's In the Name of the Son (Au nom du fils) is divided into six 'books'. It is only fitting for a film that veers wildly between farce and tragedy, but also between engaging thriller and limp noodle. It's a savage and incendiary take down of the Catholic Church that is, somewhat improbably, soft as a whisper -- a valentine to forgiveness and spirituality. As a follow up to his deadpan mockumentary Vampires, I don't think anybody could have seen this one coming. The film opens with a YouTube prologue, where two burly and buffoonish priests make a series of increasingly ridiculous requests of their parish -- Money? Time? 500 pounds of...

Michel Gondry’s Mood Indigo (L’écume des jours) was a surprise no-show in Cannes this year (his film debuted theatrically in France the previous month) but the stage is set for an opening gala opening ceremony for the 48th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Among the slew of titles that were announced today, at the top of must see list we find Ben Wheatley’s A Field in England making its world premiere in the Main Competition category, a pic we thought would end up showing on the Croisette. Another item we had short-listed for a Cannes showing but will be shown in the Spa village backdrop, we have János Szasz’s The Notebook, and making it’s international debut after a stellar Tribeca debut, Lance Edmands’ Bluebird will compete against a pack that also includes hometown favorite Jan Hřebejk and his his psychological thriller Honeymoon. In the Docu...
