Netflix has dabbled in interactive content for years. 2017’s Puss In Boots: Trapped In An Epic Tale was the streamer’s first choose-your-own-adventure special, but it was 2018’s Black Mirror: Bandersnatch that drew a large spotlight to Netflix’s new endeavor — and won two Emmys, one for Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media Within a Scripted Program, in the process. Since then, the streamer has added a handful of other interactive specials and games to its library, like Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend, Barbie Epic Road Trip, Triviaverse, and You vs. Wild.
Netflix’s next addition to the category, premiering on August 31, is something completely new: a choose-your-own-adventure rom-com. And it was last week's Trailer of the Week pick:...

Exclusive: For Banijay Asia’s Deepak Dhar, 2023 is shaping up to be one of the busiest in a three-decade career in Indian media. He has just launched The Night Manager India on Disney+ Hotstar, is delivering several scripted and unscripted shows and is also working to position India has Banijay’s Asian production hub.
“There are four pillars to our business,” he tells Deadline. “Unscripted, scripted formats, original scripted and developing India as the outsourcing hub for a lot of the rest of Asia.”
The theory is countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh, which share professional and audience taste similarities to India, will use Banijay’s Indian production assets for remakes of formats such as Temptation Island and Survivor. “They can be easily produced here,” says Dhar, who can tap local tax credits to help finance series.

Netflix Tuesday joined a growing group of companies exploring the environmental footprint of their businesses as the streamer committed to pollute less and increase investment in prevention, conservation, and regeneration projects. It is committing to reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by the end of next year and years thereafter.
In a blog post, the company’s first Sustainability Officer, Emma Stewart, outlined steps to reach that goal with a plan informed by climate science — and perhaps with some backup from the content side. “We acknowledge the reach of sustainability stories on Netflix,” she said, noting that in 2020, 160 million households watched at least one sustainability related title. Some 100 million households tuned into Our Planet since the launch in 2019 of the series of nature and ecology documentaries hosted by David Attenborough.
“When it comes to entertainment, sustainability is an epic story creators are already telling said Stewart’s post, called The Story of Sustainability.

‘Stranger Things 3,’ ‘The Witcher,’ ‘When They See Us’ Among Netflix’s Most Popular TV Shows in 2019
“Stranger Things 3,” “The Witcher” and “The Umbrella Academy” were among the most popular series offered on Netflix in 2019, the streaming giant has confirmed.
Netflix has issued a series of top 10 “most popular” lists for its content in various genres, breaking down the movies, series, nonfiction programs, documentaries, comedy specials, kids and family and international releases that were among the most viewed in the U.S. market.
Netflix released rankings, but did not disclose actual viewership stats, in keeping with its longstanding policy. According to a Netflix spokeswoman, the rankings were determined not by total number of viewers, but by counting the total number of households to stream an individual title for at least two minutes during the first 28 days of its release. For those titles that have not yet been available for 28 days, the company used projections based on the early data to estimate a 28-day viewership number, a process...

Daniel Radcliffe has joined the cast of the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt interactive special in a not-yet-revealed role.
In the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt interactive special, Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper) sets off on her biggest adventure yet. Three states! Explosions! A dancing hamburger! And you, the viewer, get to decide how the story goes. Will you foil the Reverend’s (Jon Hamm) evil plan and get Kimmy to her wedding on time? Or will you accidentally start a war against the robots?
Tina Fey and Robert Carlock’s acclaimed comedy series ended its four-season run on Netflix in January. The interactive special will air in 2020. It will be created and executive produced by Fey and Carlock, with the series’ core cast members — Ellie Kemper, Tituss Burgess, Jane Krakowski and Carol Kane — all set to return. Many filmmakers try to find new ways to tell a story, but few get the chance offered by “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.” Late last year, this installment of the Netflix anthology presented viewers a chance to control the narrative about a mid-1980s computer programmer hitting the limits of reality while working on an innovative new game.
While Netflix opted to prompt viewers with simple keyword captions on the screen’s lower third, director David Slade said his initial idea was a little more abstract.
“I remember at the very beginning trying to sell Charlie [Brooker] on a version with no text at all,” Slade said at a Q&A after a screening at a Netflix FYSee screening in Hollywood May 31. “The ‘David Lynch’ version, where you’ll get to a point in the narrative and see a series of images and if you click during one of those images, it’ll take you somewhere else.

In this time of peak TV, content providers are trying to capture — and keep — the audience’s attention not only by allowing them to choose what they watch when they want, but also, to a degree, what happens within those stories.
Interactive television may not be a new idea — the 1950s show “Winky Dink and You” allowed children to complete pictures from the program by sticking a piece of vinyl plastic over the television screen and drawing on it — but newer technology allows for greater impact on the storytelling and gives executives the ability to track user engagement.
More than 90% of “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” viewers engaged with the “choose your own adventure” story from the very first option (selecting a breakfast cereal), Netflix says, and that level of participation was the signal the streaming giant needed to “launch a whole new slate” of adult interactive content, according to the platform’s vice president of product,...

Netflix is famously tight-lipped when it comes to revealing how many people are tuning in to its endless supply of movies and TV series, though the streaming giant does occasionally toot its own horn when one of its titles does especially well. Now the company is experimenting with a weekly list of its most-watched offerings in the UK, with nature docuseries “Our Planet” topping the first edition.
In a Twitter thread, the company announced that it will be releasing such lists on a weekly basis from here on out. To compile them, “we look at the most-watched individual season of a show, film or special (regardless of when it launched). ‘Watched’ means members finished at least 70% of one episode.”
“It’s a test as we want to make sure this information is useful for you,” Netflix added. “So we may tweak it in the weeks ahead. eg. we’re not including kids right now.

Kimmy Schmidt, meet Bandersnatch.
Netflix is bringing back “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” for an untitled, one-off interactive special, set to debut in 2020. It’s the first interactive comedy for the streamer.
As with Netflix’s “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” movie and other interactive shows, viewers will be able to make choices on behalf of the “Kimmy Schmidt” characters and take them down different story branches — and they’ll get different jokes.
Cast returning for the interactive special include Ellie Kemper in the title role, along with Tituss Burgess, Jane Krakowski and Carol Kane.
It’s something of a stunt, but there’s no doubt fans of the show will be eager to dive back into the off-kilter world of “Kimmy Schmidt” in a new way. Another goal for Netflix: to drive viewers to rewatch all or part of the existing 51 episodes in the series, or reel in new fans to binge-watch it...

Bear Grylls didn’t survive this long by being dumb. The survivalist is well aware that you’re all just going to try and kill him on his new Choose-Your-Own-Adventure-style Netflix series “You vs. Wild.”

TheWrap interviewed Grylls via email because, well, the dude isn’t often in an area with good cell-phone reception. We kept the conversation pretty brief, as the assumption is Grylls is pretty much always facing imminent danger.
Our chat is below — the exclamation points are all genuine Grylls excitement.

Think you can handle the wild? Well, Netflix's newest interactive series is telling you to put up or shut up!
Over the course of eight episodes, You vs. Wild will have survival expert Bear Grylls take viewers along several expeditions around the world, but they'll be able to choose the course of his adventure in each episode. Similar to Netflix's groundbreaking special Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, viewers will make decisions that determine whether Grylls succeeds or fails. Considering the fact that he's facing dangerous terrains, wild animals, and possible death, we hope viewers will be just as cautious with their choices as they were when choosing Stephan's breakfast cereal.
"I'm so proud to deliver this first-of-its-kind live-action interactive series, really giving viewers an all access pass to explore the world and its landscapes in my boots," Grylls said in a statement. "The stakes are high in this one!" Okay, so no pressure at all!
