When you enter the East 4th Street home of New York Theatre Workshop, you can never be sure what you’re going to find. The blank-slate interior has been turned into an amphitheater for Caryl Churchill’s A Number, an Irish bar for Once, a television studio for The Little Foxes, and a multiplex for Scenes From a Marriage. This is not only a radical extension of “form follows function” but a message to playwrights (and audiences) that change is good — even if, on occasion, it fills you with dread. Dread is in fact the main feeling you get as you walk into the theater as it’s currently configured for Ayad Akhtar’s The Invisible Hand. You would not mistake the designer Riccardo Hernandez’s arrangement of concrete slabs and bare fluorescent fixtures in low, corrugated ceilings that fly over your seats for the set of, say, a sprightly comedy.

Today we are talking to one of the most powerful directors on Broadway, in the West End and in Hollywood all about the breathtaking screen-to-stage-to-screen adaptation of his Tony Award- and Olivier Award-winning Best Musical Billy Elliot The Musical, coming to Fathom movie theaters nationwide this week, the affable and gifted Stephen Daldry. Discussing originally adapting the hit British indie alongside composer Elton John and screenwriterlyricist Lee Hall into the worldwide sensation that the musical eventually became, Daldry reflects on how many iconic elements of the original production came to be as well as comments on the enduring impact of the musical since its debut more than 10 years ago. Additionally, Daldry sheds considerable light on how the Fathom filming of Billy Elliot was designed to showcase the exceptional entertainment value of the enterprise and its incredible cast of actors, as well as overseeing the unforgettable finale staged especially for this special 10th anniversary performance,...

Royal Court; Lyttelton; Theatre503, London
Every now and then the Royal Court does this. It throws up a small-cast, depth-charge production that makes bigger dramas look over-stuffed and under-nourished. It did so metaphysically with Caryl Churchill's A Number and emotionally with Mike Bartlett's Cock. It has done so again with Nick Payne's wiry new play.
Constellations is a love story that investigates ideas about time. Or it's a look at theories about time that takes the form of a love story. It tells us that we may have no such thing as free will, but leaves its audience to make up its own mind. Following the lead given 14 years ago by Michael Frayn's Copenhagen, in which a scientific theory is demonstrated in the structure of the play that discusses it, Constellations embodies its doubts and questions. It quizzes the notion of destiny by giving alternative versions...

Welsh thesp Rhys Ifans has finally joined the Hollywood big league after landing the lead villain in Marc Webb’s Spider-Man reboot. Of course there’s no word who’ll he be playing but it is surprising news to say the least.

The Notting Hill actor will be joining the ace Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Dude and Emma Stone, who has been cast as Gwen Stacy. Below is the official studio press release. Expect internet sites to be speculating like lunatics over who’ll Ifans will play.

With the announcement of Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker in Sony’s reboot of Spider-Man we were left with the vacancies for female lead and the main villain of the piece.
Emma Stone was recently confirmed as Gwen Stacey and now we have news that Rhys Ifans will be playing the villain, though they are not saying which of the many bad guys he will be playing.
There were reports that Philip Seymour Hoffman was talking to Columbia about playing Venom but strong indications say that Marc Webb and co. are not looking to Venom or Hoffman for their Spidey-reboot, and now with Ifans in the frame the internet is sure to whizz into a frenzy as to the identity of the villain he will play.
Director Marc Webb is quoted as saying that Ifans is capable of displaying the ‘warmth and rage’ of the villain in question, and there...

If you were disappointed by the lack of recognition given to Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds at the Golden Globes last week, you'll be happy to hear that the movie did get a little more love at the Screen Actor's Guild Awards on Saturday. Although most of the movie-related awards were virtually identical to the Golden Globes (and a lot of the TV ones were the same too), the Basterds did take home the award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. You have to admit, it's pretty hilarious to see Eli Roth up on stage accepting an award for acting! The SAG Awards may be just another award show that pales in comparison to the Oscars, but when all of the same people keep winning, it certainly tips the scales in their favour. The Best Picture race, however, is still anyone's guess. Are you pleased to...

Photo: Screen Actors Guild Tonight the Screen Actors Guild awarded the acting world for their 2009 contributions with the 2010 Screen Actors Guild Awards and Inglourious Basterds was the big winner of the night taking home the prized Best Ensemble as well as chalked up another win for Christoph Waltz for Best Supporting Actor. The biggest surprise and only category that was really up in the air, however, was Best Actress. The question was whether the award would land in the arms of Meryl Streep or Sandra Bullock and to my personal surprise Bullock went home the recipient which means her chances of winning the Oscar have now sky rocketed.
There were no other surprises as Jeff Bridges won Best Actor for Crazy Heart and Mo'Nique won Best Supporting Actress for Precious. Bridges, Mo'Nique and Waltz have pretty much already assured themselves of an Oscar win, but that Best Actress category still remains something of a mystery.

Kevin Bacon, 'Taking Chance'In this powerful, fact-based film, skillfully crafted as a visually moving journey, Kevin Bacon stars as Lt. Col. Mike Strobl, an officer making his way across America, who unintentionally touches the lives of the people he meets while escorting the body of Pfc. Chance Phelps back to his hometown of Dubois, Wyo. A dedicated Marine, Strobl is conflicted by not being on the front lines, instead relegated to life behind a desk in a cubicle. Hoping for inner resolution, he volunteers for escort duty.In an online interview with HBO, when asked what about the role surprised him the most, Bacon responded, "Actually, the whole process of making the film. It felt in some ways similar to what I imagined the original journey to be." Bacon is no stranger to difficult or diverse roles, collecting kudos, nominations, and awards for his broad range of characters...

The precursors have been squeezed into an unusually small period this year. The Globes, Bfca, Nyfcc, Lafca and SAG all announced in the space of one week. That's not business as usual. I guess this is one way to squeeze out all those regional critics groups because... who will care now? What does all this mean for Oscar? Generally clear consensus between the major precursors means that Oscar will be nearly a carbon copy. But with an unusual amount of time between the actors announcement and the announcement of Oscar nominations (Still more than a month away) it Might mean that Academy voters react to and against these lists, rather than along with them if you know what I mean. Do you know what I mean?

The morning the Screen Actors Guild announced the nominees for the 16th annual SAG awards. The actual ceremony will be held Saturday, January 23rd. There are a lot of gay-faves on the list of nominees.
For starters, Colin Firth picked up a nomination for A Single Man,and Sigourney Weaver is in the running for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries thanks to Prayers for Bobby.
Freshmen series Glee and Modern Family are competing against each other for Beest TV Comedy Ensemble.
And surprisingly (at least for me) the cast of True Blood is up for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.
You can check out the full list of nominess after the break!

Photo: Screen Actors Guild Nominations for the 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced this morning just two days after the 2010 Golden Globe Nominations giving us plenty to chew on heading into the weekend. As for surprises I can say there are really only a couple.
First off, one nod that's not really a surprise is the one that went to Jeremy Renner for The Hurt Locker, most likely edging out Daniel Day-Lewis for Nine. Considering we are talking about actors nominating actors this seems about right. However, Diane Kruger getting a nomination for her performance in Inglourious Basterds is a bit of a surprise, especially as she's beating out her co-star in that film Melanie Laurent, not to forget Marion Cotillard in Nine, both performances I believe are more deserving. Don't expect Oscar to follow suit with that choice.
