The first Sakura Wars game in 15 years and second to be released world wide.
Takaharu Terada had been pitching a new Sakura Wars sequel for years since 2008 but always had them rejected until 2016 when Sega moved forward on Project Sakura Wars.
The game was also considered for an Xbox One release but was scrapped.
Developers hadn't intended for artist Tite Kubo to also design the weapons for the characters but Kubo took it upon himself to do so anyway.
The first Sakura Wars game to not be developed by Red Entertainment and the first to utilize the Hedgehog Engine.
