Broody Bobby in this well directed crime drama but looses steam towards the end.

Warning: Spoilers
CLASS OF 83' (2020) REVIEW #classof83 #classof83review . . . 📜 Plot: Tale of A Policemen who has been sent to a police training academy in 1983 as a punishment posting, teams up a squad of 5 men to fight the crimes in Mumbai . . . . 👨‍⚖️ Review : Class of 83' is a brilliantly directed cop drama set in the time period of 1980s. The setting of the period drama is close to accurate and imparts the right mood in every way. The Movie being tightly edited makes a runtime of 98min in which the narrative is amazing. Vijay Singh (Bobby) trains 5 new police officers and sets them in their path to finish criminals in Mumbai. The Dramatization of Training is very short , and loosely written which fails to make a solid impact of why the 5 trainees adored Vijay ao much. The Cinematography and Screenplay is to the point and seems a work of brilliance.

Atul Sabharwal has extenuated brilliant performances which are the shining points of the movie. Brooding Bobby is back in some serious acting. He fits and suits perfectly in the uniform, with his calmness in dialogues and stern look on his face he shines throughout. Wish he does more of such roles than what he did in Housefull 4. The 5 Trainees are perfectly casted and have done tremendous portrayals of unhinged police officers. Shoutout to Hitesh Bhojraj and Bhupendra Jadawat , these two were brilliant. Great work by Anup Soni and Joy Sengupta in the supporting roles.

Overall , Class of 83 is a decent drama to binge on netflix if you have a subscription. With a period set drama, some amazing Performances and good direction this movie doesn't entirely disappoints. Wish it had more juice in the jar. . . 👍Goods : 1. Bobby and The Trainees 2. Brilliant Direction and Narrative

. 👎 Bads : 1. Disappointing Climax 2. Loosely Written Events 3. Doesn't leave an impact . . . 🔥 Final Rating : 7/10 . . ✅ Verdict : One time Watchable . .

It's an old affair

Nothing new, RGV underworld movies were far better than this. In 2020, they are providing 90s material. Red Chillies come with better projects. I heard a lot about this book but after watching movie didn't get why it was so hyped.

a great start and an abrupt end
anmolkishore21 August 2020
This movie started off well and had a great potential to build something good. Unfortunately, it seemed like the director and the script writer just gave up midway and made sometime just to finish the project. Just plain and simple - it's frustrating as the movie could not build upon the premise to give a satisfactory feel to its conclusion.

Great potential in story but very poor direction
thakarharshil21 August 2020
This movie is based on novel and has great story plot. Good direction could lead this to a interesting crime thriller experience but instead of this it ended up in vague with disruptive plot. No wonder it's released on Netflix. Red chilli production do marketing in such a way that it makes hype but never deliver. Betaal is prime example of great story with poor narrative. Stops making netflix a dumping station for below average movie.

The Clumsy Harries of Bombay police !!
madhukar3021 August 2020
"Class of 83" is fictionalised dramatisation of events happening in 1980s Bombay, though certain characters are based on the non fiction book "The class of 83" by S. Hussain Zaidi, there is absolutely no similarities between the two other than just the name. Half of the movie is based on training the police recruits at the academy under the watchful eyes of the Dean Vijay Singh played by Bobby Deol.

But the training scenes aren't detailed in any way, showing not just plot holes but large gaps in the poorly written screenplay. The middle portion of the movie is a little bit strong when the rookie cops take charge. There is a strong emphasis of events happenings in the mid 1980s Bombay helped by some timely additions of archival footages by the editor namely the Mill strikes, Dawood Ibrahim gang (Umar Kaleskar here) and the B.R.A gang rivalry, politician-gangster nexus, etc But nothing is emphasised or elaborated to the viewer.

There is a pot shot of "You blink-you miss" Pradeep Sharma-Vijay Salaskar rivalry with a couple of gripping scenes. Mostly we get only tit bits of the happenings, and the story doesn't gel together. Background score makes things more awful with very weak rudimentary music. Production design and costumes were just par.

Bobby Deol acting was surprisingly mature, strong and compassionate but the same cannot be said about the rookie cops who despite showing some promise, weren't given enough screen time, and their scenes are interrupted repeatedly. Cinematography was un-understandably dark, and the viewer has to focus his eyes to see the details in the frame.

Overall "Class of 1983" cannot be compared to Ram Gopal varma's directed and produced gangster genre gems like Sathya, Company, Ab tak chappal, D, etc in any way. At the best it is an average one time watch that too for male audiences.

All the actors were pretty good , especially Bobby Deol . Probably his best performance up to date. The movie starts solid but the ending could have been much better.

Magnum Force in Bombay
searchanddestroy-110 October 2020
Yes, this movie could have been far better, though it is an excellent subject, pulled by convincing actors and characters too. But this film lacks something, I can't say exactly what. It is inspired from actual events, so the freedom to develop an intrigue was not so wide after all. I would have loved more darkness and tragedy, more violence and gritty schemes, as I know the Indian movie industry can provide when the producers dare to. The vigilante police topic is not new in the 2010's, but it still has potential to carry solid material. A good film indeed.

In the beginning the story seemed very promising and good. Then during the middle/end scenes it would get very boring. And i didn't like the way they made the ending.

Rushed, too rushed!
irfanangel21 August 2020
On the golden rule of storytelling,"Show, don't tell", the film utterly fails. Moreover, the film promotes extrajudicial killings and such films are a threat to the idea of democracy.

Class Of 83 review :

A sincere cop is posted as a Dean in Police training academy as a punishment for trying to nab a dreaded don who has the blessing of the State CM. The Dean picks five equal minded students and encourages them to become encounter cops eliminating the don's gang members one by one.

Based on Hussain Zaidi's novel of the same name, Class Of 83 is a remarkable crime thriller transporting us to the bygone 80s era when Mumbai (then Bombay) was synonymous with underworld and their rampant gang wars. The film accurately highlights not just the politician-gangster nexus but also the repercussions of the mill workers strike. Note the restaurant scene where the newly recruited cops discuss the plight of workers and the fatality of communism over a fish meal.

Viju Shah's music score is perfectly suited to the mood of 80s. The use of actual footage lends an authentic feel to the crime drama. The sepia tone is another factor which works in its favour.

On the flipside, some scenes appear incomplete and rushed up probably to keep the films length at taut ninety eight minutes. More time should've been invested in characters development. Moreover, the crucial plot point of how the Dean influences his students from being underperforming back benchers to tough encounter specialists in the forefront is packed up in just one small pep talk. Ahem! Also, the sight of a policeman wanking off in the toilet is disgusting, to say the least!!

Of the cast, the young encounter brigade is first rate. Hitesh Bhojraj, Sameer Paranjape, Ninad Mahajani, Prithvik Pratap, Bhupendra Jadawat - all of them pitch in fantastic performances to emerge the real heroes of the film. Bobby Deol, playing their mentor Dean Vijay Singh, surprises with an assured act and leaves a mighty impression even in a small role.

I've read most of Hussain Zaidi's books like 'Dongri to Dubai' and 'Black Friday' but missed the 'Class Of 83'. This film has certainly vetted my appetite to read it. Weekend plan fixed!!

Regards, Sumeet Nadkarni

A big disappointment, nothing to appreciate other than Bobby
abhijeetabhinikkashyap28 August 2020
Imagine a bike with an amazing pick-up but that has a top speed of 60 Kmph. This movie is exactly like that, starts really good and then suddenly you realize it won't get better anymore pretty quickly. It never gets the momentum it could have! It's a story spanning upto 8 yrs and the narration behind that is awful. Only good thing is Bobby Deol's acting.

Justice or revenge?
faer_kr25 August 2020
What is that fine line between revenge and justice? That's something this movie explores. A drama based on real events and adapted from a book, Hindu. It is about a commander who, when an operation to catch a criminal fails, takes the situation personally and recruits young police officers from an academy to help him in his mission of justice. The startup is somewhat slow at boot. The few well-done action scenes. In some moments the blood is somewhat exaggerated. The problem is that in some shots they are not fully focused and the frame is lost. It is about police corruption and what happens if you don't allow yourself to be corrupted by the system. The time spectacularly recreated. The performances are within the norm without excelling. Quality.

Fails to create any sort of impact
ronakkotian22 August 2020
There was this feeling at the back of my head where I felt Bobby Deol was a capable actor and he proves his skill in this serious drama but the film overall disappoints.

Class of '83 follows Vijay Singh, a cop on punishment posting, who trains five students to combat against the underworld and police corruption present.

The best part of this film is the production design and performances. I really liked the overall look of the film. There's darkness lurking around every corner that's filled with a murky colour palette. It creates an ugly atmosphere that's very suitable for a film like this. Even the small details such as having 80s posters in the background of shots adds to the authenticity of the time period. Bobby Deol delivers a great restrained performance despite his weak character and the five cadets played by Ninad Mahajani, Bhupendra Jadawat, Sameer Paranjape, Hitesh Bhojraj and Prithvik Pratap give good performances especially considering this film being their acting debut.

Despite that, the execution of the film overall was weak. The screenplay by Abhijeet Shirish Deshpande relies too much on exposition. Executing narration well in a film is hard and sadly this wasn't one of those cases. The film is also very short and because of how fast everything moves, you don't feel much of a connection to any of the characters. It all seems way too rushed and that lack of connection creates a low impact overall. The short runtime also didn't allow the story to develop properly. There isn't enough urgency in the story for me to be entirely invested which is why the climax of the film feels so underwhelming.

In the technical department, Class of '83 is well made but the story is lacking. You barely feel attached to these characters and because of that the impact is very weak. Had they worked on the script more, this could have been a thrilling and captivating cop drama but sadly this wasn't the case.

A weak storyline saved by Bobby's brilliance
maildandotiya21 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Movie has nothing in it apart from Bobby's intense character and brilliant performance which at the end felt like he could have done more if the writers have something for him.

Note : Why bollywood is unnecessarily directing the scenes which are demolishing the images our defense forces. It's weird to see an officer jerking in public bathroom just because a girl look at him. Pathetic

Watched this movie while on a flight and really enjoyed this cop drama. As per my opinion, this film could have been more interesting if made into a series.
