Into the darkness
TheLittleSongbird11 October 2022
Of all the episodes from Season 18 when watching the whole season for the first time some years back, "Darkness" was one of the ones that stuck out to me the most along with "Burn Card". Primarily because of the opening scene and the rescue, if less so the final third (which is usually where 'Law and Order' is particularly good). The previous episode "Called Home" was an encouraging if uneven episode, so was hoping that "Darkness" would be as good on rewatch.

And you know what, it is on the whole and my reaction is more or less fairly similar to first watch. It's not a great or perfect episode and one section is a lot weaker than the rest, but when "Darkness" is at its best it's very good indeed and there are a lot of good things. It continues the encouraging if not entirely settled quality set by "Called Home", which was good to see, if not quite the improvement that was hoped for. Liked the episode, didn't love it.

"Darkness" is slickly made, with a very atmospherically shot and lit opening that really gives off a sense of dread. The music is not used too much and isn't melodramatic when it is and the direction is on the most part assured and has the right amount of momentum at the halfway mark. The script is generally taut, not feeling talky and provokes thought. The story is on the whole very compelling, with an unsettling opening scene and a tense rescue.

Jesse L Martin shows no signs of fatigue as Green and has proven that he is every bit as good as main lead as he as a co-lead. Jeremy Sisto fares well too and certainly has a lot more personality than Cassady (character development-wise he was a lot more interesting). While Martin and Sisto don't scintillate together, they do work well as a team and there is some nice grit and entertainment value to their interactions. Alana De La Garza has a lot more spark here and Linus Roache is fine.

For me though, the final third wasn't as good as everything that came before. The tautness and tension go and it becomes on the dull and predictable side, the truth wasn't that much of a shock.

The writing also isn't as taut and the edge isn't as strong. It isn't disastrous, just that something was missing.

Concluding, solid if uneven second episode. 7/10.

A few greedy people
bkoganbing18 March 2017
The worst aspects of unregulated capitalism are on display here in this Law And Order story. During a 'planned' blackout' of New York City someone decided to take advantage of it and plan a kidnap of the wife and daughter of a Hedge Fund Manager. It gets botched of course when a live-in nanny is killed outright and the wife dying later in captivity. Of course the blackout hinders the investigation of Jesse Martin and Jeremy Sisto.

When the daughter is rescued and by the look of where they were stashed it seems obvious someone had knowledge of what was to happen.

A planned blackout intending to boost the price of energy is a frightening thing. In the years of the New Deal regulation of utilities was a big item. It seems to have been lost however in the age of the Gordon Gekkos. I won't go further, but talk about greed.

I will say this, the perpetrators one of whom has a connection to the fund that owns the power company sees this monstrous scheme of greed unfolding, don't think for a minute he's not decided to cash in on it in his own way.

This episode is a winner in that it shows just how we are at the mercy of a few greedy people.

On the bright side, you can take credit for uncovering a massive fraud against the citizens of this state.

Lupo took his new place as Green assistant. At the same time, a blackout occurred in some neighborhoods in the Big Apple and a housekeeper was killed in a fancy house, in which a woman and his daughter were kidnapped. The kidnappers took advantage of the fact alarms didn't work. Investigation was very hard because police couldn't take use of technologies. One of the abductors died by accident after running away from police with a mountain bike recently rented. Detective tried to take information from his sick father, but he wasn't of much help. Shortly after, they located the mother slaughtered to death, but luckily the daughter (Valentina De Angelis) was still alive. It happened that the criminals knew about the blackout before it actually occurred: someone inside the power plant played his part in this case and the husband of the victim (a businessman) had his own reasons......

I don't like this episode: scripts are so different from the usual ones, McCoy plays just a minor role and Briscoe is long gone. The only interesting character is Rubirosa, very hot in this 18th series; but it's not enough, we are very close to pull up stakes.
