Last of a Proud Breed
This Fox Films short subject shows some of the world's last working four-riggers, still eking out a living well into the third decade of the 20th century. Beauty is part of the workaday background of these ships, even in their dotage, from the ship's masts and rigging -- partially hidden, it is true, by the rigging of lines to dry laundry on. It is that constant contrast -- skilled men walking the masts to repair frayed sheets that makes this a fascinating little movie, about like an episode of "World's Dirtiest Jobs".
This is a strange and sad short subject, and humbling, should you stop and think that fifty years before, these had been top-of-the-line ships. Still, technology changes fast. Think of what you might say were someone to tell you in 1959 that you would be reading a review of a then 30-year-old movie on a computer one day!
