How Corrupt the Human Race Is
claudio_carvalho16 August 2009
When Dean and Sam read in the newspaper about two mysterious suicides in Elizabethtown, Ohio, they head to the town to investigate the deaths. They meet Father Gil that tells them that both men were exemplar citizens that changed their behaviors a couple of months ago. The Winchester brothers discover a corrupt town with prostitution, gamble and alcohol abuse leaded by the former president of Rotary Club called Trotter; they also meet in the hotel the clumsy hunter Ritchie. Meanwhile Bobby is trying to fix the Colt and Ruby visits him and offers her support to fix the weapon. When Dean dates the bartender Casey, he discovers that a war of demons is in progress after the opening of the devil's gate.

"Sin City" is another engaging episode of the Third Season of Supernatural. In this show it is clear that there are different factions of demons in war and how corrupt the human race is. Casey has just suggested the idea of corruption to Trotter and the result is a dirty sin city in a former quiet place. The reaction of Sam, when he finds that Trotter is not possessed, is of great disappointment. One of the funniest moments in this show is the reference to Dick Cheney, the Vice- President of George Bush government. There are again beautiful actresses in the cast of this good episode. My vote is eight.

A lot of nice material, not so nice package
CubsandCulture1 October 2019
This is actually a really key episode for the overall mythos. It does a lot of work to center demons as a sort of alternative family with human issues. It introduces the notion of Lucifer being real. Likewise, the interaction between Dean and Casey (demon) is fun to return too. The love story between the two demons lands with a bit of pathos. But for all that the episode has two big problems.

First the pace is glacial. A lot of this is the episode is built around getting Dean and Casey to be stuck and interact. It feels less and less germane to the episode's story each time I watch it. The middle 15 minutes or so feels like a huuuge exposition dump. Add in that certain elements-i.e. Richie-never really fit and the episode seems like filler.

Second, I am still not sure if how the case gets to the boys' attention makes any sense. The whole town gone wild set-up feels mechanical and without any real payoff.

Overall this is an episode that treads water.

The Corruption of Humans
Red_Identity9 September 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Sin City is one of the strongest episodes of it's season, despite it getting negative reception upon it's release date.

The episode is certainly not for those who want action-packed scenarios, moreso it is a character-driven episode, one that relies heavily on dialogue. What is completely fresh about this episode is the backdrop that is added in to a demon who is possessing a young attractive woman. Dean bares his soul to her, and they both end up having a conversation that is sure to stay on Dean's mind for a long time. Their conversation relies on Dean's fate, and how much demons really believe in a higher power, in this case, 'Lucifer'. This is, of course, completely shocking to Dean, and this makes him question his faith and what he believes in. Yet, we can definitely see that while demons are the evil species, humans are themselves, not a peaceful bunch. This itself makes this some of the best writing on a supernatural show ever, and it shows how much the writers are willing to risk in terms of religion and faith.

Great

Warning: Spoilers
This episode was slightly lacking this week i feel. I think it just because i love the show so much that i get super hyped up about new eps. It was a great episode, just not one of the best, and slightly forgettable. The whole Dean talking with the demon girl was a nice angle though, have to admit. Hes been slightly feckless and reckless of late, so it was nice to see a little vulnerability to be honest. Hurrah for the re-addition of the colt though! And for the appearance of bobby. Ruby's appearance again strengthened my opinion of her, though I'm thinking with the recent activity of katie cassidy, she probably wont be around long, most networks not wanting to be associated with actors breaking the law anyways, this episode this week was worth a watch but not fantastic but to be honest I'm not expecting to be blown away every single week, and this episode did perform well XsarahX

Many engaging characters plus some intriguing demon lore Warning: Spoilers
...and straight from the demon's mouths, no less. This episode is filled with lots of clever twists and several intriguing characters (all of whom are dead by episode's end). Along with several favorites including Bobby Singer and Ruby the mysteriously helpful demon, who appears from the ether to help Bobby repair The Colt (that is supposed to be able to kill anything, natural or otherwise, including all types of demons, and even Lucifer himself).

In the course of events, Dean is trapped in an underground basement with the demon Casey. Inexplicably Casey takes a liking to Dean, and reveals several juicy secrets about demons. She explains why all the demons were unleashed from hell after Dean killed the yellow-eyed demon (whose proper name was Azazel): Azazel was leading a demon army, and his intention had been for Sam to take it over as its commander. But once Dean killed Azazel the plan was thrown into disarray, leaving the demon army leaderless; so all the demons escaped to run free on earth instead.

Another demon, Father Gil, who is in the guise of a priest, arrives and is about to kill Dean...but Sam appears in the nick of time and kills him and Casey with the newly repaired Colt.

I found this episode probably the most fascinating of season 3. Because so many important things happen during the episode - the fallout from Azazel's death, Ruby's mysterious motives, plus a great amount of demon lore - this episode is not to be missed.

Something missing this season
mm-392 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Something is missing in season 3 of Supernatural. Maybe the flow of this episode? Too many story lines? Too many characters? Running out of ideas? Killing the father and Y E D and replacing with weaker character has hurt the show! Sin city has a mix of problems. The Sam and Dean characters never shine, as in season one and two. The Sin City story is weak, and has too many subplots. A less complicated storyline has better flow, and is less confusing for the audience. Sin city's complex storyline would make a good, and easy to follow, three part episode. Too much information for one episode. Sin city has a predictable storyline, I could see the plot twists a mile away. I like too see the brothers fight the swamp monsters for a change in style. I would also like to see more Cursed objects or FBI using the brothers for a cool twist in a other episodes. 7 out of 10. I am sure the build up is worth watching next weeks show.

Dean do as I say, not as I do
eunbi05306 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Last season we had a "good" vampire, she didn't do any harm to any person and even when teased to return to her animal nature, she fought back so she could live in peace. Sam told Dean about this good vampire and he didn't care he was "shoot first, ask questions later", only by the end of the episode he had a change of heart.

Now in this episode, it was the other way around, Dean got to know a "nice" demon, he chatted with her for hours, when Sam got to the place Dean was trapped with the demon, Dean didn't tell Sam that she was a "good" demon. So Sam assumed that both the demon that was with him and the demon that was with Dean were bad so he shot them dead.

Dean had the time to stop Sam before he shot the female demon, but he didn't, he waited Sam shoot and then he said "stop Sam" or something, later on Dean tells Bobby how "cold" Sam was killing that demon. If the situation was inverted, Dean would have done the same thing, specially knowing this "good" demon killed his buddy.

That outcome seemed like lazy writing to me.

uhhh,,, what happened to Supernatural??
evangeline13 November 2007
I agree with the other poster- there is something missing and weak in Season 3. Somehow it feels like the integrity of the show has been compromised by its success. The opening sequence is flashier (an unnecessary change in my opinion, it was great the way it was), there are many characters that bring very little to story of Sam and Dean, they are bumping the sex appeal in the story lines... Who cares about that? I am not the creator of the show so it is hard to pass judgment on someone else's creative ideas, but I wish this still was the show about two brothers avenging the death of the their loved ones. About being hunted and surviving in a world of hidden evil and bleak future by the strength of their love and devotion to one another- all gritty and dark and sarcastic. That is what made it good in Season 1 and 2. Not a Halloween hunted house with pretty girls thrown in for eye candy.

How sure are you that what you brought back is 100% pure Sam?
zombiehigh188 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Over the past two seasons, Dean has been the "shoot first ask questions later" bad boy and Sam was the sweet innocent understanding little brother. However on season three we see a slight change of roles where Dean is becoming more vulnerable and more willing to listen (though not fully accepting to cooperate with a daemon), while Sam is becoming more ruthless with "The end justifies the means" point of view.

On this episode, We begin to see the first crack in Dean's "I laugh in the face of death" shield and through the brilliant acting of the magnificent Jensen Ackles we see the first touch of fear digging it's way to his heart. Jensen Ackles makes Dean an open book where you can read the guy's mind just by the look in his eyes whereas most actors need prolonged dialogues to deliver the same effect.

Another interesting idea on this episode is: sometimes people don't need the devil to go evil, sometimes we just have to fight our inner daemons and that's probably our salvation.

I enjoyed seeing the boys playfully teasing Bobby, While Richie's character seemed to be too cheesy to me and Trotter's a bit too Mafia like.

With the Colt being back, The daemon army in chaos, Some funny moments and the fine chemistry between Dean and Casey, I still can't digest the less than ordinary writing of the episode, the Dean/Casey conversation was a little cliché to me and the pace was boring at some moments.

I'm starting to worry..
PrivateBozz12 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
There's not a single thing I liked about this episode, and I'm starting to worry about this Show.

I feel fobbed with triviality (what was the point to this episode?) and annoying attempts to be manipulated. That's what Deans chat with the demon-woman was all about, wasn't it? We viewers shall start to sympathize with the 'evil' characters, and again, it's the way they transform the idea, not the concept itself I have a problem with.

The dialog was lame, and Dean just wasn't Dean, not in his behavior and not in his way of talking. It would have done some good to replace the demon-woman with a man, because I think Dean starting to talk to a demon like they were buddies would have been much more entertaining and convincing that way. I get the feeling they use every opportunity they have to throw in a pretty girl.

I really don't know why I still give this episode one point, I guess it's because this show means so much to me and I really hope they will do better in future.

Season 3
lucy-guest26 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I haven't seen much of season 3 just yet considering i live in the UK, but what i have seen makes me agree that they have "vamped" it up a little bit more then it should have been, in fact it should have just been left alone. However, although people want to see them avenge there loved ones death you have to remember that it has all ready been done at the end of season 2, dean did kill the yellow eyed demon with the colt so there deaths are avenged. They just have to clean up the mess they made in the process of killing him i.e opening the gates of hell. Im still gna carry on watching the programme when it comes to the Uk..and if neone knows when that is going to be i would be very very grateful if you could let me know...the websites don't exactly tell me much and I'm in desperate need of my supernatural...I've already watched seasons 1 and 2 again..lol Lucy P.S I loveeee Sammy :D

Kinda Boring
jjnsn23 March 2024
This episode was kind of boring, I had to keep stopping every 5 minutes to get up to do something else as I was so bored all the time. The actress playing the female bartending demon should have thought maybe about some personal hygiene since she knew she was going to be wearing a tank top and laying on her back with her armpits exposed to the close up camera. I mean, there's a lot of gross stuff to be seen in this series, but that made me gag a bit when it came on the screen. I liked seeing old baldie from Stargate SG1 on here, even though he had a small part. Just rambling now for the required minimum.
