Good gods.
onianaguma12 March 2008
In response to the poster who called herself Amanda: Lighten the Hel up.

I am Pagan as well and I didn't mind this episode at all. I also didn't mind the episode with the Vanir.

I have been an open Pagan for almost 7 years now and a non-open one for longer.

You Wiccans (and I will assume you are Wiccan because of your silly 'all pagans have the harm none rule') really need to calm down. Stop getting all uptight and self-righteous about every little thing that isn't exactly witch or Pagan friendly.

It's entertainment, plain and simple. I should also add that it is DAMNED GOOD entertainment. I love this show and have enjoyed every single episode that has been made thus far.

Awesome show
apalozzi-18 February 2008
I thought Supernatural Christmas Special was awesome! I thought it was cool how you got to see the past Christmas. I thought it was really nice to see how it was for them as kids. Also to another person who commented about this. About the Pagan gods, OK i know you got offended but it is just a show! I see shows that make fun of my Religion and you know what. I don't care everyone has their own opinion and thoughts about religons. So what I'm trying to say is, if you don't like what you see. Suck it up and turn the channel! But other wise this show was cool. Also I think that the amulet that Sam gave Dean for Christmas will probably save him from going to hell. but that is just my opinion so I could and might be wrong!

Don't like doing this
brothersatan-113 March 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I hate posting a review when i don't feel passionate about how amazing an episode of movie is this episode is great but there is no writing acting or subplot or subtext that i feel i have to mention how genius it is just want to address two other reviews.

Mike Abrams, he didn't say "Devin" he said "Dive in" as in telling Sam dive into his gifts you went through the trouble of putting that in a review and you didn't think to check the subtitles sorry dude but thats is just dumb also if you really thought it was a goof then submit it as a goof not a review unless your intention was to show everybody how smart you are and how nothing gets past you.

Amanda, just chill out girl if you are a full blown pagan don't take everything likes its a personal attack on your faith if you looked hard enough there's something insulting all religions in SPN and all religions deserve it because am done with this freedom of religion crap organised religion in WRONG! and because of it countless people have died all through history so please don't look so hard into things don't take everything so personally because i know your thinking oh no now people are gonna think us pagans are evil things that torture people, cancel that because everyone know not to take everything you see so seriously the media tries to demonize Muslims and even people that know very little about the Muslim faith or the pagan faith know that your all the same people as us with the same basic morals regardless of your personal religion.

May the force be with you!

Amazing episode
Red_Identity8 September 2010
I do not know why there is so much negativity based on these reviews, but if it is because of a flaw with how the religion was used, that hardly matters.

The execution of the episode was perfect, absolutely perfect! It was funny at times, but also dark and explored the side of Sam and Dean at their young age that many of us crave for. I found it to be one the best Christmas episodes I have ever seen, and if only people were not so keen to pick out every small detail of research flaws that there is. This remains one of the best of Season 3, and possibly of the whole series.

A fudging great episode
CubsandCulture6 October 2019
It is hard to stick the landing on Christmas episodes. Too often the episode ends up being cloyingly sentimental or radically divorced from the overall narrative of the show. Here however the episode feels motivated within season's 3 storyline and the episode finds the right balance between being Christmasy and being another case. Some of this is because the pagan god are just wonderful performed. They are two of the most memorable guest turns in the entire series. Some of it has to do with Ackles and Padalecki finely tune their performances to be touching but not hallmarky. Putting this on every Christmas Eve is well deserved.

Try some facts
lmmargerum24 January 2008
In regards to Paganism, I think that some of you who profess to be Pagans need to do some reading up on the religion you claim to be a part of. There is tons of literature of the subject of human sacrifice & Paganism: to appease the ancient gods of nature, etc. to insure good crops, good health, prosperity of the community & the like. I do agree that this episode was a bit over the top, but it is only a TV show & it was very fun to watch! I do not believe that Paganism is in any way related to Satanism; I myself have a deep belief in Earth religion. But it is in no way innocent, no religion is. Even Christianity has human sacrifice in its past. Anyone who's read the Bible knows that. Well, time to get off my soap box.

I will continue to watch Supernatural as long as its on because the cast is great, the stories are interesting & I think that the writers do a relatively decent job on the research end. Its a nice reprieve from all the reality shows & "real-life" dramas. Give me fantasy any day!!!

Santa clause is coming to town
zombiehigh188 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This might seem as an ordinary stand alone episode, yet it is way deeper than we think. On "All Hell breaks loose Part II" Dean is taking to Sam's lifeless body telling him how hard he tried to keep him away from the truth about their family, how much he wanted him to be a normal child for a little time more. In brilliant flashbacks we actually see the boys life 16 years earlier with young Sam asking everlasting questions and Dean trying desperately to avoid them. But Dean was yet just another boy, he can't tell his brother the truth but he won't stop asking, so he plays with the "be mean" card to shut Sam up. (Some people hate young Dean and think he was a jackass, but who of us hasn't resorted to the hostility card to get out of situations where we had no answers to, plus Dean was just a kid anyway living in difficult circumstances most adults couldn't handle). When young Sam finally confronts Dean with daddy's journal him gives up and tells Sam the truth. (And that's right there is why Sam was the boy that hates Christmas, it's when he lost his childhood innocence).

On the other hand, Dean's year is running out and he wants to make the most of the time he has left. He expresses his desire to celebrate Christmas that year, Yet Sam can't celebrate knowing that his brother won't be around next year.

However, after the brothers escape death being eaten by two pagan gods, The brothers decide to celebrate Christmas anyway exchanging presents in a touching scene with a brilliant silent conversation and a peaceful moment between them.

Not only does this episode reveal Dean's necklace story, (The same one he still values for the past 16 years) but it also delivers some funny moments like Dean always putting Sam in hilarious embarrassing situations, The caricature like pagan gods, the awful but funny "Silent night" chanting and of course Sam's neck again.

Chill out, it's a show, don't take it seriously. Great episode.
randolphmontsma23 August 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I was going to write an excellent review about this episode as well, but then I saw this post of this Amanda girl. First of... I didn't even know there still was such a wide spread believe of paganism. To be honest, I don't know much about this, but it's probably because of the fact that there are zero to few paganists in Western Europe, where I'm from. So keep that in mind when I say that I personally thought it was a believe of older civilizations, which has died off in the last few centuries with the rise of Christianity. So sorry about that, but this is news to me.

Second: Your post dates back to 2007, when this episode was still fresh. Probably before all the episodes about the angels. Those episodes are evidence of the fact that Supernatural doesn't want to bring any religion in a bad spot, they just make great stories about anything supernatural with a lot of fantasy in them. If you are a regular viewer of supernatural, you should know that they never mean to hurt their viewers at all.

Third: When you are religious, doesn't matter which one at all, and you watch a show like Supernatural, you should be prepared for episodes like this. Don't take these things personal, it's a show for crying out loud!

On a different note: Great episode. Really loved the last scene, it almost brought tears to my eyes.

Great Episode
SupernaturallyObsessed31 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This was an awesome episode! Too bad I can't figure out how to get it on my iPod! Dean and Lola (AKA-Metallicar) were the best part, but Sam was pretty cool too. And those creepy weirdo pagean gods-They are now the scariest thing in the world. The best part was all the great Winchester style funnies. I love the end, where they give each other presents. My other favorite parts are The cross eyed reindeer, when they break into that guys house all cop style, then start singing, and finally figuring out where Dean's necklace came from-I never saw that coming! Now I will never buy a wreath without sniffing it or checking the label. This episode kind of makes me glad I upgraded winter holidays too! Well, Mary Post-Winchestmas!

you really need to calm down
princess600022 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Amanda, you've got to calm down it's just a T.V. and none of it's real. I'm not saying that religion isn't real but,the way they represent it is evil. I understand that it upset you and I can see why. I'm a Christian and if Christianity were really like they represented it I wouldn't want anything to do with it. The thing is I'm not offended by episode like Houses of the Holy and Faith. I know that they're making my God look fake and Christians look like they're working for the (excuse me) devil. I enjoyed this episode and would watch it again but' I also agree with you that people should be wary of what they are watching on T.V. but, I also feel that writers should do there research before they writ stories.

God Bless You,

Shannon

The Evil Santa Claus
claudio_carvalho23 August 2009
Warning: Spoilers
One year ago, in Seattle, a man is pulled up the chimney. When two other men are also dragged up the chimney in the present days in Ypsilanti, Michigan, Dean and Sam head to the city to interview their wives. Sam raises the theory that they might be chasing an Anti-Claus, the evil brother of Santa Claus that limps and smells sweet. Further, Sam notes that in both houses there are meadowsweet wreaths bought in the same place. They follow a false lead first, but then they discover that a woman named Marge Carrigan had donated the wreaths to the store and they might be chasing Holdenacar, the god of the winter solstice. They investigate Marge and her husband Edward Carrigan and find that they are indeed ancient and forgotten pagan gods that once a year feed of humans. Meanwhile Dean wants to celebrate his last Christmas with Sam, but the reluctant Sam recalls his Christmas in Broken Bow, Nevada, in 1991 when Dean revealed secrets to him.

"A Very Supernatural Christmas" is another good show of the Third Season of Supernatural. When Dean and Sam chase the Anti-Claus, they are admitting that Santa Claus does exist and this would be a contradiction in the plot. However, their target is actually two pagan gods that miss the sacrifices of the ancient times but are perfectly adapted to the behavior of the American society, and the plot is well-resolved. My vote is seven.

Love the show but this episode is just bad (with spoilers)
daendil15 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Me and my wife are rewatching the series from the beginning (as we didn't see each and every one when it aired) thus I'm writing this in 2018.

Generally I don't like Christmas specials. I'm not religious but I cherish the festive mood and my childhood memories of it.

If anything, I could imagine a Supernatural Christmas episode where no one dies (for a change) and we see a little deeper character interaction between key characters. E.g.: I liked the flashback to Sam and Dean's childhood Christmas eve (hence the score of 3 instead of 2).

But this blatantly obvious (self-serving) bashing of Christmas is uncalled for and (for me) typical, boring and disgusting. (They even managed to show a guy stabbed with a Christmas tree, yay! I mean, come on, who needs this crap?)

The story of the episode in itself is lame and flat. The unnecessary torture scene is, well, unnecessary. And watching small kids getting traumatized for life (and on Christmas moreover) makes me uneasy and again - it's unnecessary and slef-serving.

I know this was made during the infamous writer strike, still, this episode is highly disappointing. Especially, since the first few episodes of season 3 were all great!

To Amanda
vodalian_knight16 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This is to Amanda. The writers did their research, I think it's you who has totally missed the point. Do what thou wilt, but harm none. That's the Wiccan credo. To appease nature spirits some pagan religions did indeed in the past do human sacrifices and nowadays I believe 99% of the population think it as evil. In no part of the episode is anyone incriminating the Wiccan religion. Also for the Houses of the Holy episode, where did anyone make it look like God doesn't exist? The spirit was merely interpreted by the victims as an angel, and isn't Lucifer according to the bible itself an angel? I think in any series containing anything about religion, there will always someone ready to jump the gun and feeling offended. I really loved this episode, especially the scene where "Evil Santa" takes a cookie.

I did not mind this episode.
mm-3919 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I did not mind this episode. The show is running out of ideas. The creators are using humor to fill story lines. Sam and Dean are screwed up. We learn up the brother past to understand why. Sam and Dean must fight a very stupid pagan gods in this show. It is like Christmas kills the pagans. I get the inside joke. We come a long way from sacrificing people. At lest they mention Jesus birthday. Will the 2 protagonist ever find peace. They did for just one day. Might not be perfect, but they tried. 8 out of 10. What will the new year bring? They need a couple of new characters. Where is the FBI? I think this show will give kids nightmares. I like the Santa Clause bum.

I to am a pagan, and while I realize this is TV, the negativity hurts
priestessnw27 March 2008
For all the negativity there should be balance. We've learned that not all vampires are bad (those of us in the real world know some of these kind of people), and if vampires can be good, shouldn't the writers throw in some good witches, pagans, and pagan gods? Writers should throw Thor in there for good measure and have him help them defeat some baddies! I'm not saying it wasn't a good episode, it's just that there are people out there who think of erecting stakes and getting out the firewood when they think of witches or see someone wearing pentagrams. While it is illegal to burn someone at the stake, so is beating up people and leaving them to die on a barbed wire fence just because you don't like their sexual orientation! Didn't keep it from happening just outside of Laramie WY not so awfully long ago!

Fabulous episode and one of my favorites
roadbytheriver8 January 2024
My favorite episode of season 3

I watched it many times with the same feelings. I won't write much about the episode. I want to talk directly about the last scenes. What impressed me the most was when Sam and his older brother Dean celebrated New Year's Eve together. The preparations made by Sam were very meaningful and beautiful. The gifts they bought each other were quite funny. Sam is always selfless for his brother. Dean is the best older brother in the world.

The final scenes were very emotional. I couldn't get over its effects for a long time. What matters is who is with you, not the circumstances.

Why does Young Dean call young Sam DEVIN...
MikeAbrams2 January 2008
Did anyone else notice, that at the end of the episode when young Sam is waking up, and young Dean tells him to get the presents.. he says GO AHEAD DEVIN...

Who is Devin? He calls him Sam later at the last scene...

The actors name is Colin... maybe he said Colin... whichever.. someone should have caught it... pretty embarrassing...

Anyone else notice this?

And whoever said that the facts are wrong... this is SUPERNATURAL not 60 minutes!

It is hard to believe this has been renewed for 3 seasons... and Invasion never hit puberty,

Show Just Fantasy but Bad Episode!
galet0915 December 2013
To people who are getting offended by the shows for religious issues, keep in mind that this is just pure fantasy people! I'm a Christian and I also agree with Princess6000. I've seen seasons 4, 5, 6 and part of 7. Am now catching up on other shows from Season 3 and the other previous seasons as well. However, if I took everything literally as to how Christianity is portrayed I would have stopped watching this series long ago.

That aside I didn't like much of this particular episode. There were a few funny parts as always but a lot more gross, twisted and disturbing parts. Such as children having to hear someone getting torn apart after they've discovered Santa or so they think. Then Sam getting his fingernail ripped out by the roots! That was horrible! I don't get into torture especially that of our main characters. All in all I think the writer went overboard in the grossness category and at least could have left the torture bit out. So this one episode was a real disappointment.

Amanda, Was it really that bad?
grappa1233 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Amanda Bickle, It's just a TV show, you have to remember that. Paganism is a made-up religion. Well, I suppose they all are, but there is something extremely artificial about the recent resurrection of pagan beliefs. It's really just a fad, albeit a harmless one.

So, if 'Supernatural' features ==SPOILER HERE== pagan gods that drag naughty people up the chimney -- which _is_ an established myth, by the way, I don't see any reason for modern day pagans to feel offense.

Lastly, there were no human pagans depicted committing violent acts. Only ancient gods. While I can understand that modern pagans feel unpopular, to say the least, this episode was not something that should have bothered you.

Terrible Episode
garbage_can_kitty18 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Once an amazing show, this episode killed it for me. Not only was it unbelievably offensive that they portrayed Pagan Gods as monsters, the writing was so atrocious that I couldn't even bear to watch it to the end. For a show that uses so many pagan symbols, you'd think they'd be a bit more kind to the Pagan Faith....Pagan Gods ripping off fingernails, bleeding people, removing teeth, posing as Santa (BTW Santa is a pagan concept as is Christmas...Hello! Solstice) Dean was a jackass as a kid, Sam was a whiner, I felt absolutely nothing about their flashbacks...Whoever wrote this should be thrown out on the street..Because again, this show USED to be amazing..Sorry Kripke you lost me!!!

not that mean to pagans
mightyslash26 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
this might contain spoilers i dunno anyway i thought the episode was hilarious with the leave it to beaver-esquire couple. those who have been saying it was unfair to pagan believers obviously don't know fully what pagan means. it essentially means those who worship another religion other than the big three, the Jewish, Muslim, or Christian faiths. Wiccan is a pagan religion but the majority say they are Wiccan not Pagan. so yeah there might be gods in some off religion some where in this whole wide world that might want to rip off fingernails and take out teeth. anyway back on subject of the episode. it was a good episode i agree though that the flash backs were very bleh. my favorite parts were at the end with the couple because they were so...i don't know...1950 sitcom people. oh well when it comes to religions people will flip out over anything so those who flip out because of the pagan gods...learn more about your religion. and to those who actually take stuff with a grain of salt just enjoy the episode.

The movie is also anti-Christian
avalonwitch25 December 2008
I agree with Amanda that the movie is anti-Pagan, and that people who create movies depicting other religions erroneously as bad need to stop it.

I am agnostic--and I consider myself fair to others who are religious. Every Christmas I see so many movies, shows, and stories that defile the original meaning of Christmas as it is understood to devout Christians. Anti-Christianity is akin to racism. If I were to create a movie like this that depicted Judaism in the light they depict Christianity, you can bet a lifetime salary I would be labeled anti-semitic. Why, then, is this bashing of Christmas and Christianity being accepted? I thought the movie was absolutely terrible. It beats up on two religions--Paganism and Christianity. This has got to stop, and people in general need to reject this prejudice. We live in a country where the constitution says 'freedom OF religion' not "from" it. If we can have a gigantic, two-storey menorah ostentatiously placed in the middle of the field in front of the White House for what is really a minor holiday to Jews, and no one be allowed to say a word about it, then the 2.9% of US population that keep bashing Christianity with ignorant movies like this one need to give the same respect to everyone else. But it won't happen until respect is just as loudly demanded by the public.

How sad a movie like this would even be dreamed up. Even this agnostic can see the prejudice behind it. Like any other anti-Christmas show or movie, this one is garbage.
