Buenos Aires — In another Hollywood studio deal unveiled at Ventana Sur, Sony Pictures Television has expanded its multi-territory deal on Marcos Carnevale’s “Inseparables” (Inseparable) to take in four new major territories: France, Germany, South Korea and Japan.
Sony Pictures Television already holds all TV/VOD rights for Latin America and all rights for México, Chile and Colombia on “Inseparable,” an Argentine remake of the Gaumont-sold French box office colossus “The Intouchables.” An odd couple, across-the-tracks friendship dreamed directed by Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache and starring Omar Sy, “The Intuchables” grossed $427 million worldwide, including $166 million in Franceand, almost as remarkable, $79 million in Germany.
Produced by Luis Alberto Scalella’s Argentina Sono Film and soon to be Viacom-owned Argentine TV network Telefe, “Inseparable” is directed by Marco Carnevale whose credits include big Argentine hits such as “Elsa & Fred” and “Heart of a Lion.” Premiered at the 2016 Venice Festival,...

The Monday April 23 episode of the ABC revival of “American Idol” saw the Top 14 reduced to the Top 10. Six of the singers continuing on in the show — Gabby Barrett, Cade Foehner, Caleb Lee Hutchinson, Maddie Poppe, Catie Turner and Michael J. Woodard — learnt that they numbered among America’s favorites and earned places in the Top 10 based on their performances on Sunday’s show.
The other eight contestants were told by host Ryan Seacrest that the three judges — Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie — would choose just four of them to move forward in the competition based on the songs that they sung on Monday’s show. The four artists that the panel put through to the Top 10 were: Dennis Lorenzo, Jurnee Siani, Michelle Sussett and Ada Vox.

It took five weeks of episodes on the “American Idol” revival on ABC but we finally have the top 14 who will sing for your votes beginning on April 22. We asked you which of these are the early favorites to win season 16, which is hosted by Ryan Seacrest. Four of the finalists – Gabby Barrett, Cade Foehner, Jurnee and Ada Vox — are the only ones to register double digits in our poll. Each was a clear favorite for at least one of the three judges: Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie.
None of the other 10 other artists in the Top 14 — Jonny Brenns, Marcio Donaldson, Caleb Lee Hutchinson, Garrett Jacobs, Mara Justine, Dennis Lorenzo, Maddie Poppe, Michelle Sussett, Catie Turner and Michael J. Woodard — merited more than nine percent of the vote. Are we underestimating one of these talents?

★★☆☆☆ Sometimes, you really have to question a film's motives. Inseparable (2011), directed by Dayyan Eng and starring Kevin Spacey, Daniel Wu and Beibi Gong, is a case in point. Li (Wu) is at the end of his tether. Unable to get close to his wife Pang (Gong) and caught in a moral quandary at work - where doing the right thing will inevitably result in his dismissal - he feels that life isn't worth living. As he's in the process of attempting to hang himself, he hears a knock at he door. Enter the enigmatic Chuck (Spacey), who makes Li see his situation from a different angle, setting him on a path which may just change his life for the better.

Release of the week Compliance
Film
Based on real events, Compliance follows a shift at a fast food restaurant that falls victim to a manipulative and cruel prank caller. On the face of it, that shouldn’t lead to such visceral and extreme reactions, and yet the movie is so accomplished that it stands alongside We Need to Talk About Kevin in terms of uncomfortable viewing.
Performances are solid, with particularly impressive turns from Ann Dowd and Dreama Walker, but where the film really triumphs is the script. Every line, action and moment emphasises the movie’s core theme of control. It builds tension between the key players in the restaurant as successfully as it builds trust between the caller and Dowd’s manager, and it does so in a genuinely believable manner.

Stars: Daniel Wu, Kevin Spacey, Beibi Gong, Ni Yan, Peter Stormare, Kenneth Tsang, Mo Zhang | Written and Directed by Dayyan Eng
Originally filmed in 2011, Inseparable is one of those movies that defies pigeon-holing. Pegged as a “buddy-cop” superhero movie, the film actually deals with the breakdown of a marriage, mental health issues and how one man can actually make a difference.
Inseparable tells the story of Li (Wu) who, after a series of tragic life events, is burnt out. His beautiful but increasingly moody wife is never home, the unpaid bills are piling up and his work is pressuring him to lie at a public hearing. With seemingly no options left he decides to end it all. But he can’t even do that right. Enter Chuck (Spacey), Li’s wise-talking American neighbour who takes Li under his wing and encourages him to stand up for himself and the exploited people around him.

Despite having a huge budget, global aspirations and Christian Bale, the harrowing Chinese film The Flowers of War bombed in the Us. Will the setback deter China's ambitious film-makers?
Few could question Zhang Yimou's ambition. In the 1980s and 1990s, he won acclaim with the likes of Ju Dou and Raise the Red Lantern. In the 2000s, he stormed to global box-office success with Hero. Though Danny Boyle's Olympics opener is now fresher in the mind, Zhang's spectacular staging of the Beijing opening ceremony four years ago left a lasting impression of Chinese capability that any of history's greatest propagandists would have envied. It also signified that Zhang, who hailed from a family with a Chinese nationalist past and was once seen as a subversive film-maker, had been welcomed into the fold of official Communist party approval.
Zhang's latest production, The Flowers of War, hits British cinemas Friday – and aims even higher.

Kevin Spacey has become the latest Oscar winner to make a foreign movie in China.
Following on from Christian Bale, who appeared in drama The Flowers of War, Spacey plays a brash American crimefighter in Dayyan Eng's new film Inseparable, which has been shot with Mandarin and English dialogue.
In the film, the Usual Suspects star plays a neighbour who inadvertently prevents Chinese actor Daniel Wu's depressed character from committing suicide, and persuades him to become his vigilante sidekick.
Spacey admits he had a great time making the movie and now hopes to return to China to produce more films there.
He says, "A great deal of finance and talent is going to be coming to China in the next decade. I have every intention of returning and working again, both as an actor, but I would also love to produce films in China."...

Johannesburg — U.S. actor and director Kevin Spacey said he sees opportunity for expanding film making in Africa, Asia and Europe.
Spacey spoke about his international outlook during a brief visit to South Africa Saturday for the premiere of a local short film he helped produce and in which he stars.
With backing from a whiskey company, Spacey ran a contest to find talent from the United States, Russia and South Africa.
A script from each country was chosen, and Spacey starred in and helped produce the three films, including South African Alan Shelley's "A Spirit of a Denture," which was given a red-carpet premiere in Johannesburg.
The 26-year-old Cape Town writer-director's movie is about a workaholic dentist who gets a visit from a pirate.
Spacey recently starred in "Inseparable," by Chinese-American director Dayyan Eng. In the movie, which was filmed in China, Spacey plays an American expat who befriends...

This is the world we live in, one where Kevin Spacey dons a superhero costume and kicks ass in China. It’s a great day to be alive. Although this trailer for Inseparable doesn’t show it, the two-time Oscar winner rocks a lot of tight spandex and a helmet mask for the movie from Dayyan Eng. It also stars the great Daniel Wu (Shinjuku Incident, The Man With the Iron Fists). In a way, it would be far better if this trailer were insane, but it’s maybe even more bizarre that it’s, you know, not bizarre. It looks incredibly straight forward. Except the part where John Doe dressed up like a blue version of the guy in Super. Yes. Source: Movieline...

As proof that filmmaking is still a global enterprise, actor Kevin Spacey has unveiled the first teaser clip for his upcoming film Inseparable. What makes Inseparable so interesting? It was made and produced not in Hollywood, but China. As far as we can recall, this marks the first time an Oscar winner has headlined a Chinese film (Spacey’s work on Inseparable was done in 2010, putting him ahead of Christian Bale’s appearance in Flowers of War) – which is pretty impressive in its own right, but not nearly as fascinating as the clip itself. Kevin Spacey is one of our most distinguished actors and he traveled abroad to make…a superhero movie? Based on the film’s tagline, “A young man with problems at home and work befriends his odd...

Screened at the 2012 Terracotta Far East Film Festival. “Inseparable” is somewhat of a landmark event, being one of the first Chinese films to feature a bona fide Hollywood star in a lead role. The actor in question is Kevin Spacey, who shares top billing with top Chinese talent Daniel Wu (recently in “Don’t Go Breaking my Heart” and “Overheard 2”) and actress Beibi Gong (“The Detective 2”, “Connected”). The film was directed by Dayyan Eng, known for the romantic comedy “Waiting Alone” and the shorts “Bus 44” and “East 22nd Street”, and has a further international flavour thanks to the presence of cinematographer Thierry Arbogast, a long time collaborator of Luc Besson, having worked with him on the likes of “Leon”, “The Fifth Element” and “The Lady”. Daniel Wu plays Li, a young man who works as an artificial limbs designer and who is going through a difficult time, his parents having died in a car crash,...

Italian Film Festival In Scotland
The cream of Italy's recent output is served here, including a host of festival winners. Oscar entry Terraferma contrasts the stunning Sicilian landscape with issues of seaside poverty and immigration, while the latter topic also crops up in the realist drama Our Life, for which Elio Germano won a Cannes best actor award in 2010. The big winner at the national Donatello awards, We Believed, is a three-hour account exploring Italy's reunification, and for perspective there are classics such as Elio Petri's Oscar-winning 1970 thriller Investigation Of A Citizen Above Suspicion.

There's a long history of Hollywood plundering Asian action stars for their own, from Bruce Lee to Jay Chou, but aside from the occasional exception (who could forget Paul Rudd in "Gen-y Cops?" Answer: everyone), the exchange rarely works the other way. But with investment from China and elsewhere becoming more and more important, the balance is starting to tip a little. Kevin Spacey is starring in Chinese picture "Inseparable" and Christian Bale took the lead in Zhang Yimou's "The Flowers Of War," while Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling are heading East for the Bangkok-set "Only God Forgives." And…...

You just have to love Sharlto Copley. The guy went from relative obscurity to becoming one of the hottest movie stars of 2009, after starring in director Neill Blomkamp‘s acclaimed film, District 9. Then he goes off and has some geeky retro fun by portraying the big-screen version of the wacky Murdock in The A-Team, and just last year ends up reuniting with Blomkamp for his latest sci-fi flick, Elysium.
Now, Deadline reports that Copley, along with Michael Nyqvist (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol) have joined the cast of a space adventure film called Europa, which is currently being shopped at the Toronto International Film Festival. The screenplay was written by Philip Gelatt, and is the story of a six-person team of astronauts from various international space stations who are sent by a private sector corporation to be the first manned mission to Jupiter’s fourth moon.
